Honestly, I have so much respect for Julian and what he's done (and is willing to do) for his family. Seeing his character progression — from the kid who was eating wax and asking other how they could live without siblings in TMI to a young adult burdened with so much responsibility in TDA — and now to see him being more carefree and open again (though still mature) in SOBH, I can't help but be extra protective and proud of his character.

He's probably the most "controversial" among Cassie's male protagonists, but what a lot of readers find distressing about his character are the reasons why I like him so much. He honestly felt like a breath of fresh air when reading TDA.

I love that despite all those dark characteristics that he was forced to adopt to survive and keep his family safe, Cristina still describes him as sunshine in human form when he smiles and later even Kieran corrects himself about his “you have a ruthless heart son of thorns”.

He can be ruthless. He has been operating on pure survival instincts since he was 12 basically. The amount of guilt he must’ve carried for the lying, the manipulation, for killing his father even though it was the right decision, for his feelings towards Mark. And how he managed to come out on the other side without being a raving lunatic? It takes strength.

When he admitted to Emma that he hates Mark sometimes for being away even though he knows it’s unreasonable and Mark didn’t choose it. He must feel so shit every time he thought like that. And then Mark comes back and he has to adjust himself to carry his older brother’s burden too instead of the relief.

The parallel at the end of the book about them hugging again and Julian just letting Mark hold his weight for a little bit as opposed to him holding up a wild and beaten Mark? It’s beautiful. And just imagining what Julian must’ve felt there. Letting his weight go on Mark briefly. It’s something he probably hasn’t done since he was a little kid.

Emma said that Julian has long forgotten how to cry because he couldn’t allow himself to do so, I believe he would’ve cried there if he could.

I really liked him. Most of her other male protagonists are a little selfish but he is so selfless. He also was not a “womanizer” like many of the others (Will, Jace), which I respect a lot more. He truly was always in love with Emma and he went through so much.

TDA was the most painful for me too, especially Lord of Shadows!

Why do people hate Julian Blackthorn from The Dark Artifices by Cassandra Clare? Can you tell me the reasons he is a bad character and reasons that he is good?

I think one of the reasons Julian Blackthorn is so hated is because he is not an angsty bad boy like Jace or Will Herondale. He doesn’t have the appeal that these types of characters have to the target demographic. It’s unfortunate, because I actually think Julian is one of the few Cassandra Clare characters that has depth. He’s got flaws that don’t include being brooding and moody. His backstory actually makes you feel sympathy for the character rather than roll your eyes. He can be ruthless and will go to any lengths to protect his family. And that flaw actually makes him pretty great too. He’s a character that seems to care about something other than romance, which is very refreshing. He’s probably the most unique character in the Shadowhunter series.

Unless there is some far-off corner of the fandom, Julian Blackthorn is FaR from being hated. We hate Charles Fairchild, Axel Mortmain, Valentine Morgenstern, and Zara Dearborn.

He’s a HERO

At The age of 12, he taught himself how to care for his four younger siblings, the youngest being two because he was to young to properly have a voice in the government

When he was 14, he became parabatai with the girl he was in love with so she would have familiarity and not be shipped off to Alicante when her parents died

He learned how to run the institute so that his family would stay toget her.

He’s AWESOME, and I can think of something that happens, when we have cast or ensemble series. Julian is overshadowed by his siblings. Ty, Livvy and Dru are far more popular than he is. Mark follows after him. It’s not that he is disliked, it’s just that the fandom does not find him as asppealing as say, two 15-year-old twins who love science and are basically in love with the same guy…..

Trust me, When someone in The Shadwohunter Chronicles is Hated. They are Hated. I tis clear exactly WHY and Their perferable method of death..Personally, Zara can be killed by Demons or Downworlders.

Are Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn related?

No, they are not. (Technically, all Shadowhunter lineages are distantly related in some way, but very distantly). The only Shadowunter protagonists that are related are:

The Herondale Protagonists: Will Herondale (Infernal Devices), James Herondale (The Last Hours), and Jace Herondale (The Mortal Instruments)

The Lightwood protagonists: Gideon and Gabriel (Infernal Devices), and Alec and Isabelle (The Mortal Instruments),

The Blackthorn Protagonists: Jesse Blackthorn (The Last Hours), and the entire Blackthorn family consisting of 9 members in the Dark Artifices.

There are a few other related protagonists (ie. Matthew and Clary Fairchild), but their connections aren’t as clear or close.
