to say JULIA was shocked by the doves was a bit of an understatement. she was merely taking a short cut on her way home from work when the birds came flying out of the alley next to her. a short high - pitched squeal escaped her lips in response. she looked around when she heard the voice, noticing the magician. her eyes darted between the birds and him; pointing a finger towards the doves as she spoke. â iâm ⊠iâm fine ⊠but i assume those birds are yours ??? â
âNoâyes they areâwere,â he began, all while nodding his head. Realizing this probably just made things more confusing, he paused to take a breath. âWhat I mean is, yeah, those were part of my act. But I might have to get new ones now, eheh...I donât usually let them out in big spaces like this. Itâs just, you see, Iâm going to be performing in a slightly larger space than usual, so I couldnât just practice in my apartment.â Was he oversharing at this point? Probably.
âA-anyway, my name is Mathias, whatâs yours?âÂ

tink was, naturally, on her way home from causing a little mayhem with slightly and a couple of the boys. short cuts were her thing because crowds certainly were not. so, she slipped into a side street, disappearing into the darkness and thinking sheâd escaped from people for a few short moments. she was wrong, evidently. doves came zooming toward her, a small squeak of shock escaped her lips as she ducked away from them. â what the fuck ! â she exclaimed, running her hands over her unruly black curls. for a long moment, tilly stood in shock for a long moment, staring at the man before her. â do you launch doves at every girl you meet, or am i special ? â
âI-Iâm sorry I...I didnât mean to,â he stammered, getting more flustered by the second. Itâs not like he expected her to be cheery about it, but he had apologized. âItâsâyouâre notâI mean Iâm sure you are special but thatâs not why I...â Wow, he really needed to quit while he was ahead. He also had to get better at recovering from mistakes like this; what if this had happened on stage? Well, maybe not this exactly, but something else going awry. He couldnât fall apart like this. Mathias cleared his throat and stood up a bit straighter.
âI apologize for the inconvenience, mâam. Is there anything I can do to help?â

He made it a goal to get out of his apartment more. There would be days where he would stay in the apartment and never leave. So the goal he set for himself was whenever he wanted to smoke a cigarette, he went outside to do it. Was to tough to get a route going, things became second nature to him. He dropped the butt on the ground and stepped on it with his foot. Heading back to his apartment, he was caught off guard by the flying white doves coming his way. âWhat the f-â he dodge them the best he could without hurting one of them. âIâll survive. Did you release those birds? How?â
Once the doves had fully cleared, Mathias walked a bit closer to the man. While âIâll surviveâ wasnât the most reassuring way to say one was alright, heâd take it.
âHow did I...?â Mathias perked up.
âWell, magic actually!â He flourished the top hat in his hand. âPulled em' right out of here~â Â He popped the hat back on his head, even if it looked a bit ridiculous with the rest of his outfit being more casual.Â
âIâm a magicianâMathias Sterling. Maybe youâve heard of me?â It was a stretch, but it was worth a try, right? Heâd performed in...a few cafes at least.

Isabelle had been distracted by her most recent endeavour to wider her reading, Cosmos by Carl Sagan. It was meant to prompt her to answer the bigger questions in life, and contemplate her position in the universe and the way that it moved around her, and she was determined to try and get the most she could out of the book. Even just to say sheâd read it, whether it had the appropriate impact on her was a moot point. The birds flying directly at her were not something she could plan for while attempting to read and walk - cars, pedestrians, all obstacles she could plan for, but birds? Caught her by surprise. âOh mon dieu! Are- are they your birds?â She asked, her head turning to follow where they flew. âIâm okay, but are those birds going to come back? Did I ruin something?â
âYeahâI mean they were. But no! No, itâs not your fault...I messed up.â OK, it was technically kind of her fault, but how was she supposed to know he was practicing here? âI was practicing a magic trick, thatâs all.â
âAt least one of the doves is probably going to come back,â he added, forcing a rather convincing smile. No used crying over a flock of birds, right? âBesides, I have other tricks for tonight.â As if to illustrate this point, he reached into the top hat he was holding (very much in contrast to the rest of his casual outfit), and pulled out a small bouquet of flowers.
âSee? Oh, Iâm Mathias by the way. Whatâs your name?â

â NO â DOVES ? YOU mean thatâs what just flew at my face ? â the actress exclaimed after finally having a second to catch her breath from the incident moments prior. the woman had mistaken the things for pigeons â those bastards always sat and bothered patrons at her work â and by extension, her.Â
â itâs okay â but jesus, you did scare me, â her nerves break into a small chuckle, crossing her arms over her chest, â no â iâm not, i live close by. in this complex, actually. â
âYeahâwhat did you think they were?â Before she even had a chance to answer, Mathias remembered himself.
"Oh umâright, right Iâm sorry I scared you. See, I was practicing a trick for my magic show later this week. But it didnât uh...didnât go exactly right. I didnât know anyone even went down this way...â Which was weird, considering heâd been here a while. Maybe he had to get out more?
âWhich apartment are you in?â

Adam could not for the life of him remember if it was a left or a right to get back to the Baltimore building⊠Barbara had given him directions to get the the take-out place up the street, but heâd only gotten twisted around on his way back and the evening only got darker. And speaking of dark streets, as Adam heard a crash coming out of the alley-way next to him, he sprung to life, sheltering himself with his arms in case someone decided he was a good choice to mug tonight. When no mugging or threatnng came however, Adam lifted one arm from his face to see the young man scrambling to his feet, âOh? I- No, yes. Yes, I thought you were some kind ofâŠâ Okay, it was a little embarrassing to be scared of someone probably half your age, so Adam just stopped there, âAre you?â
The intital answer was a little confusing, but that was to be expected, he supposed. Relaxing a little, Mathias nodded.
âYeah, Iâm fine. Might need to get new doves, but itâs my own fault. Nothing to be gutted over.â While he wasnât in full costume (thank goodness!), Mathias was wearing his top hat for a later part of the trick, and it suddenly hit him how strange that might look with his jeans and T-shirt. Snatching it off his head, he opened his mouth to try and explain...but then something else occured to him.
âHold on...â
â....you thought I was some kind of what?â

THROUGHOUT THE moving process, he was surprised he didnât feel the least angered, didnât feel the urge to run and punch something. When it comes, a week after heâs settled, itâs a big one. Itâs triggered by something so small and insignificant that he doesnât even remember. Michaelâs glad his sister is at work, she would be worried and the last thing he wants is to his family to find out about his anger issues, but he knows he canât stay at home, otherwise most of the apartment will be broken in a few minutes. So, he walks out, mostly without a destination in mind. He doesnât even see where his going, his eyes on the floor, seeing red the whole time. And then he turns right to an alley and three doves fly right to his face. â Blimey! â Taking a step back and protecting his face with his hands, Michael takes his time to recover from the scare as the birds fly away before realizing the other man. â Oh fuck, man. Are you alright? â
"Yeah, Iâmâwhat?â Itâs not that he didnât appreciate the concern, he just wasnât expecting the man to ask if he was alright.Â
âY-yeah, yeah Iâm fine, thanks, but I wasnât the one who just got rushed by a flock of doves.â He did seem alright though, that was reassuring. Suddenly, Mathias was really wishing he hadnât gone for a dress rehearsal; he must have looked very odd in a full tuxedo, holding a top hat, and standing alone in the middle of a deserted alley. He cleared his throat, placed the hat back on his head, and offered the man a smile.
âJust...practicing.â

THE WALK FROM work to her apartment of course takes her to behind the many buildings of mr. webberâs complex. itâs so out of the way, cathy grumbled to herself as she strolled through the alley next to the emerald building. she didnât even notice the other person practicing a routine, until âŠ
â oh my god â ! â cathy gasped as a swarm of â pigeons â ? flew right in her direction, she threw her hands up in front of her face protectively. she barely heard the manâs question over the sounds of her panicked yells, â oh my god, â she repeated, lowering her arms cautiously as she looked around, â what the hell was that ?! â
âTheyâre doves! Oh wait you meanâitâs magic. I mean itâs an act but...â Maybe none of that was what she was even asking? She was probably just startled, and rightfully so.
âSorry,â he said again. âI didnât mean to scare you. I didnât know there was anyone here. Or anyone went through here...â In fact, did this alley go anywhere? It was possible, he wasnât an expert on the area, but it still seemed a bit strange. âYouâre not lost, are you?â

THE GUY IN the back alley had caught wendyâs attention â she could not really see what he was doing, but her curiosity was piqued. the girl was more curious than was probably good for her, but she couldnât help it⊠there had always been a wandering spirit hidden inside of the girl, and the people she had surrounded her with when growing up had been a great help in finding an outlet for that girl. maybe that is why she did not hold back but instead, walked into the alley in order to find out what was going on. â hi there ! â, the brunette spoke, loud enough for him to hear â until she was greeted by a bunch of doves flying in her direction. â whoa ! â, wendy let out, ducking as a laugh fell from her lips. â yeah, iâm fine ! donât worry. â, she reassured the guy as she walked closer again. â are those coming back or⊠? â, the brunette asked as she pointed over her shoulder at the doves.
Mathias almost immediately relaxed into a smile when she said she was fine, both because he was genuinely relieved and because it was a go-to coping mechanism when flustered. Smiling when something went wrong was what you did on stage after all, right?Â
âQuaxo might come back,â he replied with a little shrug. âBut the rest...I might need to get more. Itâs my own fault though.â After a pause, he quickly added, âQuaxo is one of the doves. Cause he...you know. Kinda makes this quacking sound? Itâs weird.â Mathias defintely had some theories behind that, but this was neither the time or place to share. In fact, he was quickly realizing even the clarification on the name might have been a bit too much info.
âUh...Iâm Mathias! Whatâs your name?â Not the most graceful attempt at changing the subject, but he tried.Â

It wasnât easy to find a place to practice his larger-scale tricks. Most he could rehearse in his own apartment, but this one...this one required a bit more space. It took a little searching, but finally, he found a back alley without a single other person. Or at least so he thought. Mid-way through the trick, Mathias heard footsteps. In his surprise, he jerked around, tripped over his own two feet, and sent three live doves soaring in the direction of the unsuspecting bystander.
âIâm sorry! Are you alright?â

She wasnât quite sure what he was up to when he reached out towards her, but she didnât have any time to become worried about it because suddenly heâd produced a beautiful flower from out of nowhere. Â The delight was clear as day on her face.
âFlowers and magic?  This place is awesome~!â  She reached out to take the rose, admiring it.  "I hear roses can be a bit difficult to care forâŠBut I am up for the challenge!â  Spotting some sunflowers, she picked one up, giving it a smell.  âSo are you a magician, or is it just a hobby~?â  She picked out a few flowers for a bouquet, not caring if they were the ones that were âsupposedâ to go together.  Matthais might notice her go for whites, pinks, and yellows the most.  âHowâd you get into it?â
Mathias was pleased as punch with her reaction, positively grinning from ear to ear. He hadnât actually expected her to keep the rose, but it was pleasant surprise, to be sureâhe had plenty more for his show that night. He defintely noticed her gravitating toward some specific colors, but more than that, he noticed her less than traditional choices of flowers for her bouquet. He didnât find that off-putting either though; no matter what his mother said, he thought bouquets were just like magic: there were safe staples, but to really wow a crowd, sometimes you had to think outside the box. Especially for someone as ambitious as her! Roses were not joke.
âIt defintely started as a hobby,â he admitted, âback when my uncle took me to see some magicians at the local theater. It was incredible!â Even now, talking about it brought a special sort of twinkle to his eyes. âCreating something out of nothing...and making everyone smile? It was pretty much my dream, my calling. I do it professionally now!â He paused, his eager smile turning a bit more sheepish. âWell, sort of. I guess Iâm just performing at cafes and clubs right now.â Just as soon as it left, the eagerness the eagerness returned to his smile. âBut one day, I wanna perform on the West End stage!â He hoped that didnât sound too silly to her; he was serious, after all.Â
âWhat about you? Do you have any interest in the theater?â

âNo Iâm okay too! Â Thank you for catching me~â Â With his guidance Victoria was standing up straight in no time. Â She offered him a sweet and apologetic smile for his trouble. Â Glancing on the floor behind her, she noticed the hose that she had tripped over and gentle nudged it out of the way with her foot. Â With that bit of excitement passed them, Victoria noticed the irises he was carrying and perked up at the sight of them.
âOh these are so beautiful~  You can tell the person that raised these really loves them~" Somewhere behind Mathais, the cashier was looking very happy. âAh, do you work here? Iâm looking for flowers for my apartment. What do you suggest?â  Â
âMy pleasure!âÂ
Mathias brightened when she complemented the flowers. He loved his mom very much, and it made him happy whenever people noticed her hard work.Â
âWell, I do work here sometimes.â He was listening to her request, of course, but for some reason he couldnât stop staring at her either. What a beautiful smile! He could just point her to the some of the easier-to-care-for flowers, or better yet, to his mother (she was the expert), but all of a sudden, he wanted to impress her. And why not? And unexpecting audience is sometimes the best one.
âWell, I suppose that depends on your preference. Do you like irises, lilies, poppies? Or maybe youâre more of a...â he quickly reached behind her ear and seemingly pulled out a bright pink rose, âtraditionalist~?â

Being in a gang was no easy thing, though David had this inkling that someone was doing something to make it easier for him. He almost rarely had to actually do anything, which didnât seem right. In fact, heâd already gone several days without having to do anything gang related. Instead heâd been given the chance to focus on his real work. The display sat on the table, a little diorama of the next event he had been planning, minature tables and lights strewn across. David carefully posed his phone, snapping a few pictures before sensing a presence behind him. âWhat do you think?â He asked, taking one more picture.
@musicalstartersâ
Mathias had always had an admiration for the arts. Sure, he had a preference for the performance arts, but almost all art tended to make him stop and stare. This little....diorama? Was no exception. Although he was initially a little startled when the man seemed to recognize that someone was behind him without even turning around, he recovered quickly.
âItâs beautiful! Is this a place youâve been?â Already, Mathias was imagining himself performing at such a venue.Â

â BLESS YOU. honestly bless you. no one quite gets it.â persephone sighed, a soft smile on her lips as he suggested he had some peonies. a light chuckle left her lips, something akin to endearment in her eyes. he was sweet, that much was obvious. and as the boy pulled out what were incredibly close to peonies, a gasp left the heiressâ mouth. âthat was an incredibly lovely gesture. they are quite breathtaking. but yes, let me get you that drink.â persephone gave a warm smile, fingers snapping as the bartender paid her mind. âwhat are you having dear?âÂ
The womanâs reaction was encouraging, bringing a bit of a smile to Mathiasâ face despite his gaff.Â
âWell thank you! Oh um...â Despite just agreeing to the offer for a drink, he wasnât actually sure what to get. He didnât even drink that often, in all honesty. Would it be weird to stick with soda? Maybe. The last thing he wanted to do was make a fool of himself after she was so nice about his earlier mistake.Â
âIâve never actually been to this place before. Do you have any recommendations, Miss...?â he asked, trailing off when he realized he didnât even know her name. And in turn, she didnât know his.
âOh gosh, I havenât even introduced myself!â He held out a hand. âMathias Sterling!â
