The only thing I'd strongly disagree with and highlight here I'll correct by stating that, actually, the ruling dynasty in Muscovy before the Romanovs in the 17th century was not the Rurikids, but still was the Chinggisids.

Not the Third Rome

The Pan-Orthodox Council convened by the Jerusalem Patriarch Theophilus III after the visit to Moscow has ended in a virtual failure. Apart from the Patriarch of Moscow, which was the real initiator of the meeting in Amman, the only ones who responded to the invitation of the Jerusalem Patriarch were the primates of the Polish and Czech churches, who are dependent on the Russian Orthodox Church (and during the years of Soviet rule - on the KGB) even from the time of the establishment of "friendly regimes" in socialist countries, and the Serbian Patriarch, who took advantage of the meeting to support the property rights of his church in neighbouring Montenegro.

The communiqué of the meeting, which was supposed to be devoted to the problems of Ukrainian Orthodoxy, states that the issues of granting autocephaly should be adopted "in the spirit of a Pan-Orthodox dialogue, with universal consent". Patriarch Kirill once tried to impose the same thesis on the Pan-Orthodox Council in Crete. The proposal hadn't received the approval of most Orthodox churches of the world, Kirill himself hadn't come to the council, but at the same time, the Russian Orthodox Church continued to give out its own idea of the "universal consent" about granting autocephaly as an agreed and existing norm. They continued to give out with such perseverance that they themselves got believed in their own lies. Even in Amman, Metropolitan Hilarion told reporters about an agreement in principle that hadn't been "ratified" in Crete. Why Patriarch Kirill didn't get to the council to ratify his own proposal was what the metropolitan didn't explain.

But an explanation does exist though. Patriarch Kirill got believed that Moscow is the Third Rome. And he continues to believe despite his defeat in Amman.

As could be seen, that isn't so, at least because the Moscow Patriarchate didn't dare to initiate Pan-Orthodox councils and therefore had to resort to the services of the Jerusalem Patriarch. Because no one, except those who merely can't deny Moscow, had responded to the invitation of the Jerusalem Patriarch. But even here, there was a hitch - the Patriarch of Antioch, who was in Syria and is dependent on Moscow more than the Polish and Czech metropolitans, couldn't be pushed around. Moreover, even at this "council of one's own", the former Kyiv Metropolitan Onufriy, who heads the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate, had to be included in the delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church as an ordinary member of the delegation, disavowing Putin's recent explanations about the "independence" of the Ukrainian church. Because one thing is to tell tales on TV, and another thing is to make Orthodox hierarchs believe in them.

There is no Third Rome and never has been - no matter how much one spends petrodollars to fuel this myth. But there is a church trying to provoke a split in world Orthodoxy and found itself in actual isolation in its struggle with the Ecumenical Patriarch.

Because even those clients of this church who can't deny it anything and who imitate the Pan-Orthodox Council in Amman don't risk going against the Ecumenical Patriarchate; or even staging a joint service in the Jordanian capital. Because the Christian church is older than the Third Rome, is older than Kirill or Putin, and is not outliving the first or twenty-first generation of ambitious politicians who got believed in their cardboard greatness. The Ecumenical Patriarchate is a reminder of this fidelity to tradition. And the Moscow Patriarchate is a reminder of what a moral catastrophe happens when the church satisfies the wishes of the authorities.

Perhaps, only in this sense can Moscow remind of the Third Rome.

Vitaly Portnikov: Rapists Must Be Resisted

The thrust in the first interview that Putin ’s accomplice Vladislav Surkov made after his leaving the Presidential Administration of Russia was that "coercion by force into fraternal relations is the only method that has historically proven its effectiveness in the Ukrainian direction".

In simple terms, Surkov acknowledges that the only way for the Kremlin to annex Ukrainian territories to Russia or to make Ukraine a satellite country is the rape. Because this is, in a clear language, a translation of the coercion by force into fraternal relations. When the "brother" gains by force the sympathy of the one whom he decided to make his "relative". Or when, by force, a man gains intimate intercourse with his wife. All this is ordinary violence, the relevant articles of the Criminal Code.

If Surkov spoke not of the states, but the people, he would look like an ordinary maniac, whose inclinations should be dealt with by law enforcement agencies and psychiatrists. But when Surkov talks about the states, then he - at least to himself - looks like a serious politician. And the fact that the recommendations of this "policy" have already led to the deaths of thousands of people, the appearance of hundreds of thousands of refugees from the occupied territories, people get arrested, tortured, and no longer theoretically, but practically raped in prisons of Crimea and the Donbas - this is not very important to Surkov himself, nor to millions of his compatriots. Because the "coercion by force into fraternal relations is the only method".

We must clearly understand that we are neighbours of a criminal formation that pretends to be a state only to rape and kill - and is not ashamed of its bloody instincts. What Surkov says is not a Surkov's belief, Surkov has no belief at all. It is the Putin's program. The rape program for Ukraine.

And paths to this violence can be different. It could be brute force, a supporter of which is Surkov. Could be deception, in which Kozak is a specialist - this is why they want to make use of the Vladimir Zelensky's "unusual ease of thought" noticed by the Russian delegation in Paris. And it could be a bribe. But in any of these cases, rape will be unavoidable.

Rape can only be avoided if the object of violence resists the violence.

In the words of Mr Surkov, this is "the only method that has historically proven its effectiveness in the Ukrainian direction. I don't think that any other will be invented".
