For the love of Olmsted, stop teaching LA students software, and start teaching them software workflows. Here is a sampling of outstanding work from the winter terms “Intro to Media” course at @uoarchenv. Almost all these second-term students had less than 200 hours of total software experience, as self-reported in their initial gap analysis. Also, a HAF high-five to @ign24680 for preparing many of these students last term in his award-winning studio…he’s a not-so-secret foundational media dynamo in the department. . . . My rockstar @uoarchenv thesis student, Heather Tietz, has successfully submitted her 50% thesis draft. Her design research is beyond rad (urban ecology x ceramic art x environmental design) and gives me joyful hope for the future of Landscape Architecture. The project in Heather’s own words: “Examining themes of abundance, resilience, and liminal space, I have been learning about the qualities and benefits that mosses provide in suitable urban environments such as the Pacific Northwest. My master’s project aims to foreground the potential of mosses by designing ceramic and clay substrates of varying porosities that I hope will serve as basic research in the field of landscape architecture. Translating ideas through analog drawing, digital and parametric modeling, and 3D printing in clay offers an exciting and iterative process in research-through-design. While monitoring the primary experiment, I am using an hourly time lapse photo capture, collecting humidity and temperature data, and journaling through observation.
