Cathedral windows to a crystalline world. *happy sigh* . Since my kitchen tiles can be in any firing program, and I only have one tea bowl in each load, I’ve been able to set the firing program exactly for the glazes on the tea bowl being fired. Lots of notes and “try this next” post-its going on here. I never dreamed the kitchen tile project would allow so much firing research. Blue, blue, blue. My firings are still full of kitchen tiles (two more kiln loads I think.) But a girl can’t live off tiles alone. I’m finding a corner or two for little cups and tea bowls. These are from yesterday’s firing. My son bought me a pint of @coyoteclayandcolor Orion for Christmas. He made sure it was something I didn’t have, and researched what cone I used. So sweet. I’m testing it here under Blue Purple as a way to slow the runny glaze and prevent it from dripping onto the carved area. It is a very submissive glaze, basically disappearing except the bottom edge. But that bit that shows is really cool. A pop of violet, and then mottled, mossy greens and brown. (Orion is blues and browns alone, so the glaze combo is changing the color.) Yes! If I were to list my tea bowl goals, this beauty would check off all the boxes. The swooping glaze edge allows the glazes to act differently when they have 1.5 inch vs 3 inches of vertical space to move. The left side didn’t move much, so the two different blues stay separated and a pink haze developed. The stitch remains untouched by flowing glaze. In contrast, the right side crystallized, and flowed right off the pot, leaving a lovely drip in the heat of the kiln. #lifegoals . #glazegeek warning I’ve been fine tuning this rusty copper glaze, and I think I’ve got it! For those following along, this is version eight of this glaze. The last four versions have been beautiful, I just wanted to keep playing. With each revision I assumed it would get too glossy, and run all over, but it just kept getting better. I think this one is the final. Shimmery yet still rustic. Yum. Time to try it on a larger piece and see what that copper can do when it has room to run!!! I love this glaze combo. It makes me think of a desert spring. That feeling of a cool space on a hot day. The smell of water in dry air. Exciting! Kitchen tile in progress (finally!) I was down sick for two full weeks, but on Saturday I felt a bit better, and definitely felt like I could not watch anymore tv, so I started installing the kitchen tile. I’ve been making these tiles for 6 years. I’m so excited to see this come together. The next wall (out of frame) will go up next weekend, then a grey grout to soften those stark white lines. #mugshotmonday So much going on in this glaze. You can see it start to flow down the edge of the carving, but the stitch stops the flow. I suspected this was happening, sometimes covering the stitch entirely, but here is the proof. This reminds me of playing in a stream as a kid. Making dams from mud and twigs until the water found a small opening, and whoooosh! Ideas flowing. . . It is in the shop.
