#glazegeek warning I’ve been fine tuning this rusty copper glaze, and I think I’ve got it! For those following along, this is version eight of this glaze. The last four versions have been beautiful, I just wanted to keep playing. With each revision I assumed it would get too glossy, and run all over, but it just kept getting better. I think this one is the final. Shimmery yet still rustic. Yum. Time to try it on a larger piece and see what that copper can do when it has room to run!!! #glazegeek warning: This is my control freak side. Crystalline glaze runs. It’s what it does best. I love to use that to show the movement of the glaze when it becomes a liquid at 2100+ degrees. But I also love controlling that movement. Making it stop on a dime, or drip exactly where I want it to drip. This piece does both. I always say glaze is the first consideration in pottery, not the last. We need to shape the clay with the glaze properties in mind. An ash glaze needs bumps and divots to collect in, a celadon glaze needs pooling points to show off, and a crystalline glaze needs a smooth surface with room to run. Design then build. When I cut the line for this arc above the black texture, I ran my thumbnail against the upper part of the cut, making the slightest lip to direct the glaze to the drip points on either side. I do this all the time, but this one! 😘 I’m afraid there will be a lot of glaze geek posts this week. I love this glaze combo. It makes me think of a desert spring. That feeling of a cool space on a hot day. The smell of water in dry air. Total glaze failure, and I absolutely love it. 💙💙💙 #glazegeek warning. This is my blue crystalline glaze. As is true for most crystallines, it is very finicky. Even though I use smooth porcelain, I have to burnish the piece to create a perfectly smooth surface for the crystals to form. The glaze must be exactly the right thickness when applied, because it needs to move (aka: run and drip) in the kiln, so the height of the glaze area is also important because it can change the glaze’s “runway.” Finally, the kiln must reach top temperature quickly, then cool to 1970° and hold there for 4 hours. Everything has to be just right. 🐻 I believe the cold, wet weather made the bisqueware slightly damp when I glazed this cup, so it didn’t hold as much glaze as it needed. I’m doing test tiles to reproduce this result, because today’s fail will, hopefully, become my new favorite glaze. I love these variations. Especially how it changes with the height of the glaze area (see last photo). #glazegeek warning I’m in radical glaze ideas mode, but before I can try some of the things I have in mind, I needed a refresher on what happens if I don’t control my glaze drips. It has been 10+ years since I used a support under a piece, and let the glaze run into a shallow bowl below it. Surprise! It still works. (Like somehow physics changed in the last decade. 😂) Perfect flow, lovely gathering of crystalline formations at the base, and the support ring broke off neat as a pin. Woot! In 2020 this piece was fired on its side, and the resulting puddle of crystalline glaze was ground down to reveal what is inside. All my sketches and notes this month have been about changing the way the glaze moves in the kiln - and there have been so many sketches! Suddenly these handles are all coming together. The glaze can run down the long curve, and also run away from the texture area at the bottom of the handle to drip at the lowest point. Sweet! And check out that flow/bubbling in the blue. It’s a reaction caused by this glaze combo, and I can’t get enough of it. #glazegeek warning! Honestly, I need to control my curiosity sometimes. This yellow glaze (Parakeet Yellow)was fired at cone 6, but didn’t have much visual texture. So I stuck it in with yesterday’s bisque firing at cone 06. The background lightened to a paler yellow, and the crystalline darkened to this interesting orange. So cool! Now I want to send all my finished test tiles through a bisque fire just out of curiosity. . Side note for people who don’t speak in cones: 06 is like -6 in kiln temperature measurements. Generally potters fire from cone 010 (coolest) to 04 (hotter) to make the clay absorbent before glazing, then fire again from cone 5-10 to chemically change the glaze and clay into pottery that will outlive us all. #testtiletuesday I am obsessing over color today. That bite of cold in the morning has me thinking of coppers, deep reds, and earthy greens. #glazegeek warning: Inspired by the petal shapes on my tulips, I purposefully made the pink microcrystalline in this glaze form in arches. This is simply a vertical brush stroke, each stroke just barely overlapping the one before it. That tiny overlap has more glaze, and runs in a predictable pattern.
