Blue, blue, blue. My firings are still full of kitchen tiles (two more kiln loads I think.) But a girl can’t live off tiles alone. I’m finding a corner or two for little cups and tea bowls. These are from yesterday’s firing. My son bought me a pint of @coyoteclayandcolor Orion for Christmas. He made sure it was something I didn’t have, and researched what cone I used. So sweet. I’m testing it here under Blue Purple as a way to slow the runny glaze and prevent it from dripping onto the carved area. It is a very submissive glaze, basically disappearing except the bottom edge. But that bit that shows is really cool. A pop of violet, and then mottled, mossy greens and brown. (Orion is blues and browns alone, so the glaze combo is changing the color.) #glazegeek warning I’ve been fine tuning this rusty copper glaze, and I think I’ve got it! For those following along, this is version eight of this glaze. The last four versions have been beautiful, I just wanted to keep playing. With each revision I assumed it would get too glossy, and run all over, but it just kept getting better. I think this one is the final. Shimmery yet still rustic. Yum. Time to try it on a larger piece and see what that copper can do when it has room to run!!! The little pieces are bringing me joy this week. It is the same glaze on these two pieces. The top one was applied thick and smooth; bottom one applied thinner with a stiff bristled brush. I absolutely love them both. I don’t have a huge studio. A multitasking glaze like this is a big deal. These spoon rests are my favorite “Test2” tiles. My first glaze tests go on scraps of clay bent into L shapes. I can be sloppy, silly and quick. It’s just a test tile. Test2 tiles are actual pieces. Carved, burnished and fully ready for use, but smaller, so I don’t have a week long mope if they fail. I love this shape for Test2 tiles because the glaze is captured. I can see how much it runs without cementing the piece to my kiln shelf. This beauty was purple across the entire bottom and up the sides a bit. Crystalline glaze was then piled on thick at the top edge. The heat of the kiln made it liquid glass and Whoosh! #glazegeek warning: This is my control freak side. Crystalline glaze runs. It’s what it does best. I love to use that to show the movement of the glaze when it becomes a liquid at 2100+ degrees. But I also love controlling that movement. Making it stop on a dime, or drip exactly where I want it to drip. This piece does both. I always say glaze is the first consideration in pottery, not the last. We need to shape the clay with the glaze properties in mind. An ash glaze needs bumps and divots to collect in, a celadon glaze needs pooling points to show off, and a crystalline glaze needs a smooth surface with room to run. Design then build. When I cut the line for this arc above the black texture, I ran my thumbnail against the upper part of the cut, making the slightest lip to direct the glaze to the drip points on either side. I do this all the time, but this one! 😘 I’m afraid there will be a lot of glaze geek posts this week. #throwbackthursday I am making more of these sake / espresso cups this week because they allow me to experiment without regrets. For me, glaze testing goes like this: 1. Scrap of clay bent into an L. If some little part catches my eye, then it moves on to part 2. 2. Burnished formal test tile with copious notes. Always tested by virtual brushing 2 coats, 3 coats, 4 coats on one side, and horizontal brushing on the other side. (Yes, the direction makes a huge difference.) 3. Small cups with lots of form variations then show how the glaze moves and pools. They test my ability to get the glaze to stop above the texture, and allow me to create interesting variations around the cup as well as the inside/outside options. Again, very detailed notes. . Next to my tea bowls, these little gems are my most expressive pieces because anything goes. Cathedral windows to a crystalline world. *happy sigh* . Since my kitchen tiles can be in any firing program, and I only have one tea bowl in each load, I’ve been able to set the firing program exactly for the glazes on the tea bowl being fired. Big #mugshotmonday I have my methods of making mugs, but the way I attach the bottom to the walls, and shape the foot limits the height, which limits the amount the mug can hold. Limits annoy me. I am perfectly capable of handbuilding a 20 oz mug, it just requires a different method.
