Honestly, I spend more time with Bill at the infirmary, so in general I haven't built many relationships with any of the patients… Freddy is a special case because I know him from outside the asylum, before he got sent here with me. But it's unprofessional of me to talk about that…” *looks around, starts whispering* “If you want to know the full story, ask me about it later, when nobody is around, I'd gladly vent a bit and tell you.”

How long have some of these patients been here, and how long as this building been in place?

-Dwight- How long…. Man that's a hard question. This building has been up for quite a long time… I think It used to be an old house before the government bought it… The government funded the back then called “Lery Prenn Asylum”. It's not quite sure what happened, it had been running for many years, and apparently at first it had a great reputation but then… Experiments started to take place, and since the patients weren't exactly wanted people… nobody knew what was going on in there… It's known that Herman used to be the main doctor in the asylum, back then, at least the last years just before someone noticed something wasn't right in there… Apparently him and Sally worked there for many years, Herman managing to climb his way to the top. There were files that showed that he and Sally used to be normal, functioning people, professionals who wanted to help the sick but… The experiments being done to the patients, the inhuman conditions in which they treated them, and the alienation that being far away from the city caused… just- b-b-broke them. I think most of the previous workers either killed themselves, or where assigned to different mental facilities, some were sent to prison… But Herman and Sally were sent here, I think they were going to face charges, but before the place could be demolished, someone bought it, remodelled it and managed to get the Daylight asylum running in its place… The owner of the building, the founder of the asylum… Few people have seen him, fewer even know his name… It's unknown how he did and keeps doing it… Somehow building a successful asylum, personally choosing and bringing patients… He seems to be quite influential, he also is the one who personally chooses us, the personnel, tho I only had an interview via phone, I didn't even apply to this facility! He just… somehow got hold of my portfolio and called me-- The pay was so good, I just couldn't deny… And here I am, working in a place with a dark backstory… Honestly? As creepy as it is… I'm very honored to be working here, to be part of a good change, you know? I never could stomach reading what kind of abuse and experiments were done here but- I know we are giving the patients a great, ethical treatment, and everyone is always working to keep everyone safe and healthy.

Habían documentos que demostraban que él y Sally solían ser normales, personas funcionales, profesionales que querían ayudar a los enfermos pero… Los experimentos que le hacían a los pacientes, las condiciones y tratamientos inhumanos, y la soledad de estar tan lejos de la ciudad… Simplemente los r-r-rompió. Creo que la mayoría de los otros trabajadores o se suicidaron o fueron asignados a otros asilos mentales, algunos fueron mandados a prisión. Pero Herman y Sally fueron traídos aquí, creo que iban a ser arrestados pero antes que el lugar fuera demolido, alguien lo compró, lo remodeló y de alguna manera hizo que el asilo Daylight trabajara en su lugar… El dueño del asilo, el fundador… Pocas personas lo han visto, menos conocen siquiera su nombre… Nadie sabe como lo hizo y sigue haciéndolo... De alguna manera construyendo un asilo exitosamente, personalmente escogiendo y trayendo pacientes… Parece ser alguien muy influyente, incluso es quien personalmente nos escoge, el personal, aunque yo solo tuve una entrevista con él desde el teléfono, ni siquiera había postulado para trabajar aquí! Simplemente… De alguna manera se consiguió mi curriculum y me llamo-- Pagaba tan bien, realmente no pude decir que no… Y aquí estoy, trabajando aquí, en un lugar con tan mal pasado…. Sinceramente? Por muy extraño que sea… Me siento orgulloso de trabajar aquí,  de ser parte de un buen cambio, ¿sabes? Nunca pude leer el abuso y los experimentos que ocurrían aquí pero- se que estamos dándoles a los pacientes un tratamiento bueno y ético, y todos siempre velamos por la seguridad y la salud de todos.

Hello! Just wanted to know if we're allowed to bake or cook anything for certain patients or staff members? Such as cookies or pasta? I'd like to make some one day for Herman and a few staff members who do a wonderful job at the asylum!

We gladly would accept any sort of donated goods, including cooked or baked food! Here in the asylum we don't have much time for baking treats, and as the head of the kitchen, sometimes cooking can get stressful… Some prepared foods would help a lot, especially since there are days where some of my coworkers try to help and end up burning the patients lunch, making us redo all the food. 

Ugh, It's so stressful when that happens, one time Dwight tripped while holding the pot with the day's lunch on it, five minutes before lunch time!!! I think we had made some vegetable soup that day, which left such a mess. The good part was that Feng quickly reacted by ordering pizza, which Claudette didn't quite like since it wasn't exactly a nutritious meal, but the patients were thrilled to have a pizza day, so even if it wasn't healthy, that day everyone seemed so happy.

Con mucho gusto aceptamos cualquier tipo de donación, incluyendo comida o pasteles! Aquí en el asilo no tenemos mucho tiempo para hornear cosas, siendo la jefa de cocina, a veces cocinar es algo estresante… Recibir comida hecha ayudaría mucho, especialmente porque hay días en donde mis compañeros intentan ayudar pero terminan quemando el almuerzo de los pacientes, haciendo que tengamos que cocinar de nuevo. Ugh, es tan estresante cuando eso pasa, una vez, dwight se tropezó mientras sostenía la olla con el almuerzo del día, cinco minutos antes de la hor de almuerzo!!! Creo que habíamos hecho una sopa de verduras ese día, lo cual dejó un desastre en la cocina. Lo bueno fue que Feng actuo rapido y ordenó pizzas, lo cual no le gusto mucho a Claudette, ya que no era exactamente una comida nutritiva, pero los pacientes estaban tan felices de tener un dia de pizzas, así que aunque no fue algo sano ni ideal, ese día quedaron todos contentos.

Some of the nurses know how to play the piano, Nurse Kate for example is great at it, she entertains the patients sometimes…

Tho, there was this time, when Herman was acting strange? He kept staring at the piano from different angles, and at some point he sat down and… started playing a beautiful melody? His face looked concentrated, like he was remembering a skill he forgot he had? He refuses to talk about it now, but on rare occasions he plays the piano, usually when few people are in the room. It was the only time I felt sanity in him... and the melody he played, besides being beautiful, was melancholic.

Algunas de las enfermeras saben tocar el piano, la enfermera Kate por ejemplo es muy buena, a veces entretiene a los pacientes tocándoles algunas piezas…

Aunque, pasó una vez, cuando Herman estaba actuando extraño? Se puso a mirar al piano de diferentes ángulos, y en un punto se sienta y… comienza a tocar una melodía hermosa? Se veía tan concentrado, como si hubiera recordado una habilidad que tenía? No habla de ello, pero en ocasiones se pone a tocar, usualmente cuando hay pocas personas en el cuarto. fue la única vez que sentí cordura en el... y la melodía que él tocó, ademas de hermosa, era melancólica.

What are the patients routine?

-Jake-

We make them wake up each morning at 8:30 AM, making them go through their hygiene routine, shaving, showering, brushing their teeth etc. In the time they are in the bathroom, sometimes we ask them to change uniforms, maybe from AA to N or vice versa, depending on their behaviour… 

We change the times of therapy, some do better in the morning, some do better in the evening… So some patients prefer to have breakfast and right away have their session. The others stay in the common room meanwhile, we have some activities that help with therapy, but the general activities like exercise, socialising and relaxing are variable between patients. 

They all have the same time for lunch tho, right at 1pm. It is here where some of the patients receive their medication, that is, those who refuse taking them normally, so we have to put it in their food… Talking of which, meds also vary on patients, these being taken either in the morning, at lunch, or at night.

After that they have more time in the common room, some get to rest in their rooms if they have been behaving well, tho at this time we try to encourage them to spend some time at the yard or do some more exercise. 

They can have some snacks in between, at 19:00 they have dinner and lastly, they are all sent to their room at 21:30, so that they’ll be asleep at 22:00.

Hacemos que se levanten todas las mañanas a las 8:30, asegurándonos que cumplan con su rutina de limpieza, afeitarse, ducharse, lavarse los dientes, etc. Mientras están en el baño, a veces les pedimos que cambien de uniforme, tal vez del uniforme AA al N o viceversa, dependiendo de su comportamiento.

Los horarios de terapia son variados, algunos reaccionan mejor en las mañanas, otros en las tardes… Así que algunos pacientes prefieren tomar desayuno y tener su sesión inmediatamente. Los que no, se quedan en el cuarto común mientras tanto, tenemos algunas actividades que ayudan con la terapia, pero en las actividades como ejercicio, socialización y relajación varían entre los pacientes.

Todos tienen el mismo horario para almorzar, exactamente a la 1 pm. Es en este horario en donde algunos pacientes reciben su medicación, eso es, solo aquellos que se rehúsan a tomarla normalmente, así que la colocamos en su comida… Hablando de eso, los medicamentos también varían por paciente, los cuales suelen ser tomados en la mañana, en el almuerzo, o en la noche.

Después de esto tienen más tiempo en el cuarto común, algunos pueden descansar en su cuarto si es que quieren y han tenido buen comportamiento, aunque a esa hora tratamos de que pasen un rato en el jardín o haciendo algo de ejercicio.  

Claro que pueden tener algún bocadillo entremedio, pero a las 19:00 deben comer, y a las 21:30 los llevamos a sus cuartos, para que a las 22:00 hrs estén dormidos idealmente.

Exactly what kind of... therapy do you guys do here?

-Claudette- Well, here we mostly do talked therapy in hand with medication, sometimes we try and do activities to practice certain reactions and social skills, tho they have varying results. Some people has been doing great, like Evan, even with his violent outbursts, he is showing signs of controlling his emotions, tho of course he is taking his first steps still… But sadly others have not shown much improvement, like Max, he might not be so dangerous like the others but… Ugh, there are things that trigger him so strongly, we always have trouble with him every morning, since hygiene is so important for us in here, we make the patients shave to keep a clean face… He hates his beard so much, he tries so hard to pretend like he is a kid, but finds seeing himself in the mirror every morning and find the face of a deformed adult staring back… it breaks his fantasy, he isn't ready to accept the reality of his situation. --- -Claudette- Aquí hacemos mayoritariamente terapia hablada acompañada de medicamentos, a veces tratamos de hacer actividades para practicar algunas reacciones y habilidades sociales, aunque los resultados siempre varían. Algunos han estado muy bien, como Evan, aunque su ánimo varía bastante, ha mostrado señales de tener mejor control de sus emociones, aunque aún está en las primeras etapas del tratamiento…  Tristemente, hay otros que no han mostrado ni un progreso, como Max, puede que él no sea tan peligroso como otros pacientes, pero… Ugh, hay cosas que lo provocan con tanta fuerza, siempre tenemos problemas con el en las mañanas, ya que la higiene es tan importante para nosotros, hacemos que los pacientes se afeiten para que tengan un rostro más limpio… El odia su barba tanto, intenta con tantas ganas pretender que es un niño, pero al mirarse al espejo se encuentra con un adulto deformado… Rompe su fantasía, no esta listo para aceptar la realidad de su situación.

Does Phillip like to hide in the plant life? There are a few sticks in his hair.

-Nea- 

Yes, usually if he isn't in one of the couches covered in blankets, he is in the garden meditating between the flowers and bushes we have here. Tho most of what he has in his hair and body comes from the outside… The asylum is in a forest, and somehow Philip has been escaping and going to the forest for some time, only to return with various trinkets and very dirty… He hates it when we clean his hair, so we usually allow him to keep those branches and leaves for the day, making him shower only at night. He does this every. Damn. Día. Sometimes he saves the leaves and instead of escaping he simply goes to his room and “dresses up” with them, its kinda strange, i'm not sure why he does this. 

Si, usualmente si no está en uno de los sillones cubierto en mantitas, está entonces en el jardín meditando entre las flores y los arbustos que tenemos, Aunque la mayoría del tiempo lo que tiene del pelo viene de afuera… El asilo está en un bosque, de alguna manera Philip ha estado escapando y vuelve después de un rato con pequeños “tesoros” y muy sucio… Odio cuando limpiamos su pelo, así que usualmente lo dejamos quedarse con las ramitas y hojas por el día, haciendo que se duche en la noche para dormir. Él hace eso. Todo. El. Maldito. Tiempo. A veces guarda algunas de las hojas y en vez de escapar, simplemente va a su cuarto para “adornarse” con ellas, es algo extraño en realidad, no estoy segura porque hace esto.

We have a small staff here- are these the staffs until the shifts end? Or are these all we have at the moment? Would like to know in case we talk to a new head doctor

Oh, yes our staff does take shifts, so not everyone is always present, they all need time off from the asylum.(and i need it now)  In case of the main doctor, it is always needed that at least one is present, so far we only have two main doctors, Claudette Morel and Adam Francis, tho i think you’ve seen only Claudette so far, yes? Well that might be because Adam is picking up a couple of transfer patients who are arriving soon to the country, and i think he even is coming with a new nurse for the asylum, so we are all quite anxious to see them! I wonder how long will it take before they arrive… 

You know... I wonder why they allow people like you to be in a place like this... I know you are new, but give it time and you'll understand. Even with the new patients that are coming...

Oh, sí, nuestro staff toma turnos, por lo que no siempre todos los enfermeros y doctores están presentes.todos necesitan un descanso del asilo. How do critical patients eat when they’re in the straitjacket? Do we hand feed them or let them eat in their separate rooms? ( asking this because it would be a concern if they like stab themselves in their state and I’m worried about that )

*Great! An opportunity to slack off and give someone my tasks!*“I'm glad you asked! Yes, we hand feed them, since it's too dangerous for them to be allowed to handle the utensils in this state. We have tables especially for these cases… Which brings me to today’s critical patient, we need someone helping him, so I need you to take this tray with you and assist Herman with eating”

Do you allow patients to enjoy arts and crafts? I find most in therapy to enjoy a creative outlet. I'd be more than willing to come to your establishment to work with your patients.

“There was a time we did but… now we rarely allow them such activities. Actually Philip might be the only one who gets the privilege of doing some crafts, tho he rarely asks for any tools for it, he prefers using his hands and the twigs and leaves he brings from his escapades… But other than that? We rarely do them, since  there has been too many accidents in the past.

S-s-she had p-p-pierced her hand with one of the pencils!!! And she didn't react at all! She had this blank expression as she stared at the pencil now impaling her hand, then she retracted it and tried again! Lucky one of my colleagues was able to stop her before she hurt herself some more… I wish I had done something, but I was so shocked! She didn't even fight when they took the pensil out of her hand, she calmly allowed herself to be guided to the infirmary… I was tasked with cleaning the blood…

 E-e-ella se había perforado la mano con uno de los lápices!!! Y ni siquiera reaccionó! Tenía una expresión totalmente relajada mientras miraba el lápiz ahora atravesando su mano, luego lo saco solo para intentarlo de nuevo! Por suerte uno de mis compañeros pudo detenerla antes que se hiciera más daño… Me hubiera gustado hacer algo, pero estaba tan sorprendido! May I ask what kind of conditions do some of the more critical patients have ( like do they see/hear things that aren’t there and act violently because of them or maybe some sort of ptsd? ) i would like to be informed so I can act more accordingly

The more critical ones, that means Evan and Herman. Let me talk more about their conditions, i'm sure we told you a little bit but, there is always more to know when it comes to mental health…

Los más críticos, o sea Evan y Herman. déjame hablarte más de las condiciones que padecen, estoy seguro que el staff te ha contado algo, pero siempre hay más que saber sobre la salud mental…

Herman has been diagnosed with both schizophrenia and Antisocial personality disorder… This means he has trouble distinguishing what is real and what isn't, which means he talks alone a lot and dissociates, he believes he is still the main doctor of this Asylum, even when everything points to the contrary… His Antisocial behavior usually translates to him manipulating other people to take advantage of them, he seems to be unable to be empathetic, and barely shows any emotion, he can be quite cold and calculating, but can explode and be aggressive and impulsive, specially when he cant get his way… When he was in charge, he committed atrocious crimes against his patients, violating both human rights and the law without a care in the world, he believed himself above all that...

Evan on the other hand has been diagnosed with intermittent explosive disorder, which basically means he has spontaneous and repetitive impulsive, aggressive and or violent outbursts, usually out of proportion compared with whatever provoked them. He tends to throw tantrums over simple things, which is exactly what brought him here… He tends to be a lot on the AA uniform, his tantrums can mean he wrecks the place, i mean… he is the reason why we no longer have tvs in the asylum, he kept breaking them… in these tantrums he can harm others or himself, there are times where we even need to administer him sedatives, tho he has been learning a lot, usually the uniform is enough to keep him under control.

A Herman lo hemos diagnosticado con esquizofrenia y trastorno antisocial de personalidad… Esto significa que tiene problemas para distinguir que es real y que no, lo cual hace que hable solo mucho tiempo y se desasocie bastante de su situación actual, aun cree que es el doctor jefe aunque todo diga lo contrario… Su comportamiento antisocial se traduce en su manipulación de otras personas para aprovecharse de ellos, parece no poder sentir empatía, y rara vez muestra emociones, puede llegar a ser bastante frío y calculador, pero puede explotar y ser agresivo e impulsivo, especialmente cuando no se va con la suya… Cuando estaba a cargo, cometió crímenes atroces contra la integridad de sus pacientes, violando los derechos humanos y las leyes  sin ningún remordimiento, creía que estaba por sobre todo eso…

Por otro lado tenemos a Evan, a quien hemos diagnosticado con el trastorno explosivo intermitente, lo cual básicamente significa que tiene momentos donde es impulsivo, agresivo o violento de manera espontánea y repetitiva, los cuales suelen ser respuestas desproporcionadas a lo que las provocó. Hace berrinches por las cosas más simples, razón por la cual está aquí… Tiende a estar constantemente en el uniforme AA, ya que sus berrinches tienden a destrozar el lugar… Es por su culpa que no tenemos televisores en el asilo, el los rompía con mucha frecuencia…con estos berrinches él puede también lastimar a otras personas o a sí mismo, a veces tenemos hasta que usar sedativos para calmarlo, pero ha aprendido mucho, y el uniforme tiende a ser suficiente para mantenerlo bajo control.

In terms of their meds, we give them the usual antipsychotics and sedatives, in hand with talked therapy, which can be hard in some cases, specially with that damn “Doctor Carter”- Ah, sorry, I know they are sick and all, but I really don't like some of the patients, specially Herman… And between us? He had it coming, karma did one hell of a number on him.

En cuanto a sus medicamentos, les damos lo usual, anti-psicóticos y calmantes, los cuales van de la mano con la terapia hablada. las cuales son algo difíciles a veces, especialmente con ese maldito “Doctor Carter”- Ah, perdona se que están enfermos pero realmente no me agradan algunos pacientes, especialmente ese Herman… Y entre nosotros? Yo creo que se lo merece, el karma hizo su trabajo con este.
