“Heard you got yourself a little job, Curtis,” Holden teased from where I stood in the locker room getting ready for practice the next day. We had a game approaching and Coach Hutcherson had been insisted on longer sessions more than ever. If we failed, if we lost, then well, it’ll be bad reputation on all of us. Myself included.

I was used to Holden’s antics now, I didn’t even bother to scold him or run away from him. I learned how to stand my ground. I huffed and rolled my eyes, yanking on my jersey. “Yeah,” I said, slanting hiim a look. “I start Monday.”

Holden pressed his lips together, folding his arms over his chest. I closed my locker and tucked in my jersey before grabbing my gloves. “Why do you care?” I asked.

Holden shrugged. “Just never imagined it.”

I blinked and narrowed my eyes, skeptically. “You seem to forget, Holden,” I snapped. “I’m a Greaser. We aren’t as privileged as you. We don’t have it easy out here on the East Side.”

Holden raised his hands. “Woah, watch the attitude, Curtis,” Holden says with a grin and a wink. “I was just surprise was all. After all, it’s not every day a Greaser can make his way in the world so easily.”

I rolled my eyes and grabbed my shoes.

“You told Coach about this?” Holden said, breaking the silence.

I sighed as I tied my shoes. “Yeah. He ain’t happy, but he understands. We’ll work something out.”

Holden, still leaning against the locker beside me raised a brow. “And if it don’t?”

I paused, frowning. I swallowed, glancing up at him. I stood, packing my clothes into my bag and faced him. I grinned. “Then I already know what I’m going to choose.”
