Monkie Kid: Creature's Comforts, Chapter 2- Non-Potable Nonsense
A chapter that ended up way bigger than planned and took me way longer than I liked to cut down and finish, whoo! Pop over to AO3 if you'd prefer to read it there!
[Prev. chapter]
___________________
“Sooo,” Wukong started as he hopped off his cloud, landing with a disgusting ‘squelch’ at the bottom of the pathway up to his hut, “That could’ve been worse.” He turned back and gave a forced smile to his student, meanwhile tugging off his sopping wet scarf that had been choking him for most of the ride back to Water Curtain Cave.
“Wuh-worse?” MK echoed- landing with an equally gross ‘squit’ thanks to waterlogged shoes. He flipped back his once-fluffy fringe that had been laid flat against his eyes to send an incredulous stare to his mentor. “I dropped us in the ocean. F-for like, the second time!” he added past chattering teeth, taking a moment to wring out his tail.
Monkey King offered a half-shrug as he tilted his head away. “Yeah well, this time,” he counted off on one hand, “It was an accident, you didn’t lose your stuff, and!” he rebuked, holding up a finger as he slung his poor scarf over a nearby branch that promptly snapped under the weight, “We didn’t end up at Ao Guang’s palace. I consider that a win.” the stone monkey finished cheerfully. He sat himself on a blissfully warm rock and began taking his boots off. To no surprise, they were full of sea water, and one very confused shrimp.
MK huffed an annoyed breath through his nose as he plopped his duffel down to shrug off his jacket. “It wh-wouldn’t have happened if I could control my, myuhuh,” He stuttered, nose wrinkling and mouth hanging open. He turned away in time, avoiding splattering Wukong with spit as he let out a rather adorable sneeze, accompanied by a light show. The small ‘ka-chew’ did not fit the “drowned rat” style MK had going- which is, coincidentally, what he turned into after the cloud of magic dissipated.
Monkey King was making sure to be a better mentor for MK. Part of that included biting the inside of his cheek to keep from letting out a snort of very inappropriate laughter as he watched his poor, small, sick student wriggle out from under his discarded jacket. Once he was free of his wet confines, MK checked over his new form, and let out a high pitched groan of indignation as he slapped his tiny rat feet over his tiny rat eyes. “Two years spent learning how to use my 72 transformations, and I finally turn into a rat after I SNEEZE?! ” yelled rat MK.
Unbidden, a “haHAA! ” shot out of his mouth faster than he could stifle it, and Wukong quickly turned away and shoved his fist against his face.
“Aa-ha-hm!” he coughed, “Think I, euh, got some se-hee water in my throat!” was all he could muster beyond his horribly disguised giggles, daring not to even glance at his successor until he was changed back. Monkey King could feel two beady eyes trying to bore holes into his back as he did his best to not laugh.
It wasn’t funny! Absolutely not! His tail swishing behind him as his shoulders quaked meant nothing.
Out of the corner of his eye he saw MK shift back to his monkey self, picking up his belongings as he stood up. “ Nooooo, go on, Monkey King, laugh at me.” MK groused as he swung his duffel  back over his shoulder. Wukong’s body only shook harder. “It's toooootally fine to laugh at your successor’s misery.”
“Who said-” he cleared his throat of the last remnants of his giggle fit, while setting his boots next to him to dry out in the sun. He turned to MK finally, giving his most sincere yet lying-through-his-teeth grin to his dear student. “Who said I was laughing? Told ya kid, just swallowed sea water the wrong way.” he finished nonchalantly as he rubbed a hand under his nose.
MK responded with an “Uh-huh.” that not only didn’t sound like he was convinced, it was three times removed from sounding even remotely convinced. It almost, almost made Wukong crack up again.
To the kid’s credit, it was hard for him to stay peevish over minor things. If he didn’t know any better- which Wukong did- he would think that MK was leaning into the ribbing with his dry comment and the barest hint of a smile on his face. That uneasiness from earlier today had almost entirely faded seeing his student still in relatively high spirits.
The moment dissipated as Monkey King stood and padded up the walkway with MK falling in line, the kid’s shoes making a rhythmic plop-plop-plop as they ascended. “Since you’re my guest, and you’re sick, you get dibs on the shower, bud. I’m gonna go take a bath in the river.” The joy shining in his student’s eyes as he fist pumped was endearing.
“Yesss! Fresh, hot, not fishy wat- wait.” he stopped, one foot still in the air. “You’re taking a bath in the river? ” he balked, eyes wide.
“Uh, yeah?” Monkey King replied, like the kid had asked him if the sky was blue. “It’s clean water.”
MK’s tiny V-shaped nose scrunched up. “Uhh, not to judge you Monkey King-”
“Which you totally are,” Wukong interrupted.
“Isn’t river water still kinda dirtyyyyy?” He finished meekly, tapping his fingers together as his tail curled.
At that, Wukong got a little defensive. “Ok, a river doesn’t have nearly the same health benefits as treated water in a house, I’ll give you that, but it’s still fine to bathe in- we’re at Flower Fruit Mountain! We used river water when we were on our journey for the Samhadi Fire too, remember?” he added pedantically as he spread his arms wide.
“I mean, yeah, we did, but like,” MK stuttered, making his worn-down voice crack even more. “We still filtered it.”
Wukong’s face melted into a flat stare at that. “Kid, you chugged muddy desert water at a swindling fish demon’s outpost.”
“But we were so thirstyyy!” he moaned, tugging at the still damp fringe that hung limply at the sides of his face. “We hadn’t had water for hours! That’s completely different!”
“Ah ah, no, that proves my point.” Wukong replied smugly as he waggled a finger, turning away from MK and continuing up the steps. “We’ve been over this lesson- use the environment around you to your advantage, kiddo! That includes using fresh river water for baths.” he called over his shoulder.
“Does that also include getting sick from gross, untreated, mountain water?” MK jabbed right back.
At that provocation, Wukong continued to argue with MK over what could be considered clean enough water the rest of the short way up.
___________________
Unfortunately for MK, Monkey King was very good at arguing- he had over a thousand years of practice compared to MK’s 8 or so. It was unfair from the start. Also, y’know, loads of knowledge on just about everything. Despite that, MK still stood firm on his view of what did and didn’t make for usable bath water, even as he lost the battle.
“-and that is why non-potable doesn’t mean unusable. Anyways!” Monkey King clapped his hands together, swiftly changing the subject now that they were in his home. “You know where the bathroom is. There’s a bunch of towels for you to use in the hall closet, and a hair dryer under the sink. Try not to slip and fall while I’m out, m’kay? You don’t need a concussion on top of being ill.” his teacher added helpfully, lightly tapping his fist on the side of MK’s head.
MK let out a ‘pssh’ and playfully shoved Monkey King’s hand away. “C’mooon. I’ve had at least,” he paused to count on his fingers real quick, “10 different Big Bads smack me around, and a bunch of life or death battles that I’ve managed to walk away from in one piece. This stone-cold noggin ain’t going anywhere!” he stated proudly, also knocking his knuckles against his head.
Monkey King smiled and gave his shoulder a quick pat as he passed him to go to his room. “Let’s not push our luck anyways, bud.” he stated, sounding almost fond. MK smiled back and set to taking off his drenched footwear. “Now go shower, you’re making my house smell like a seafood market.” he said with a dismissive wave.
MK let out a reedy, affronted gasp. “Hey!” he shouted hoarsely at the back of his mentor, almost tripping out of his drowned sneakers. His only answer was a distant laugh muffled by a shutting door. Rude.
He puffed his drying- fur? He’s pretty sure it could be counted as fur now- out of his field of view so he could see long enough to grab a non-saltwater soaked outfit and his toiletries out of the duffel. He thanked his past self for his forward thinking in getting a waterproof bag for these kinds of situations.
New outfit chosen, and socks and shoes deposited outside, MK walked back down the hallway to Monkey King’s bathroom.
He knew where it was, but he’d never actually been inside. It felt strangely personal to go in when his teacher wasn’t around, despite having free run of the place when Monkey King had left last year. MK carefully creaked open the door to a darkened room, unsure of what he would see there aside from the obvious. It only took a few seconds of smoothing his hand against the nearest wall to find the light switch and flick it on. What he saw was…
Pretty basic, honestly. The floor was tiled in a color that was complimentary to the rest of the house, a couple bath mats were laid out in high traffic areas for water, the toilet, sink, and mirrored medicine cabinet were off to one side, and the shower sat on the opposite wall. MK gingerly stepped the rest of the way in and shut the door behind him. Unsurprisingly, the vague aroma of peaches hung in the air.
“Huh.” was all he could think to say at the very normal presentation. He didn’t expect anything grand- well, maybe a little lavish, like the palace he had read about in the orignal Journey to the West- but even so, seeing an average bathroom in the Monkey King’s home felt strange.
MK set his clothes and toiletries on the edge of the sink and took a moment to finally get a good look at his current state in the mirror. The monkey he saw there had a mane that was damp and sad-looking, with an equally sad red headband that had slipped down and was touching the edge of his peach-shaped marking. MK ran a hand through his hair- the monkey did too. He wrinkled his reddened nose- the monkey wrinkled his. MK pulled the goofiest expression he could think of, and the monkey in the mirror matched him perfectly.
He relaxed his face and continued staring blankly at his reflection. Each day it got a little easier to believe he was a celestial monkey, had secretly been one his entire life- yet more often than not it felt like one giant hallucination. Like the dreams he had when he was little.
It was hard not to think about who or what made him after… that, but MK knew it wouldn’t help him any to chew on big questions he didn’t have answers to. It definitely wouldn’t help get that piece of seaweed he now saw clinging to his bedraggled fluff.
Snapping back to reality, MK opened up his small travel bag and set to putting his stuff in the medicine cabinet. Inside, there were even more completely boring items one would expect to be there. As he arranged what little he brought to fit in amongst his teacher’s things, MK mused on how this felt like a sleepover.
… Wait.
His eyes widened and he shut the cabinet door, his reflection equally as shocked.
That’s what this was. He was having a sleepover- a slumber party, even, with the Monkey King, at Monkey King’s house. His definitely flawed but still super-cool teacher and friend.
MK turned on the water and waited for it to get to the perfect temperature.
‘We’re having a sleepover,’ he thought. Possibly a week long sleepover. However long it took until he was feeling better.
He tossed his still damp clothes to the side and stepped into the cozy embrace of a hot shower.
‘We’re having a sleepover,’ he thought. They were gonna watch sooo many movies- they had to, at least one every evening.
MK washed his fur free of salt and that single piece of seaweed.
‘We’re having a sleepover,’ he thought. They needed to stock up on ALL of the sleepover snack essentials.
As he cleaned up, that train of thought ran over and over through his head, and MK daydreamed about what they could possibly do for a potentially week-long sleepover.
Five towels and an hour spent running the hair dryer later, MK was clean, fluffy, free of fish stank, and in his second favorite outfit. He bundled up his dirty clothes and put them in what he was 87% sure was the laundry hamper as he wandered back out to the main room. Monkey King wasn’t back yet, as far as he could tell, but a handful of his monkeys were sitting on the couch and taking in reruns of Chang’e’s cooking show. MK found an unoccupied spot and flopped down on the cushions, with only some annoyed chirping coming from the fuzzy couch potatoes. A slight quickly forgotten as two of them snuggled in on his still-warm body.
The hot shower had helped immensely with improving his mood and opening up his stuffy nose, but the body aches from forcefully changing had only been mitigated some. A bummer for sure, but nothing a little rest, medicine, and not coughing or sneezing under any circumstances couldn’t fix.
The ‘rest’ part of that could wait for a little bit until he knew where his teacher was.
“Do any of you guys know where Monkey King is?” MK asked the TV-tranced primates. One spared enough brain power to point at the general direction of the front door, giving out a small ‘Ah’.
MK craned his neck over the back of the couch to see no Monkey King behind them. “Mmmmmgonna take that as he’s still out.” he said to no monkey in particular. With all of his energy exhausted in trying to find his teacher for two seconds, and now fully ensnared by the gravitational combo of couch-plus-TV, MK settled in to watch Chang’e talk about Bingfen.

Monkie Kid: Creature's Comforts, Chapter 1
It's heeeeere! I had a blast writing this and I feel like I'm improving at writing humor. Let me know what you think, and like before you can read it here or on my AO3 page.

When Monkey King got a new phone at the humble, totally not using his puppy dog face request of his successor, he made the firm rule that only MK would have his number. His reasoning being he was already harassed enough through his email address, and he liked to keep a low profile.
That was broken within the first week as Mei somehow, oh so mysteriously got his contact info, and he only made 15 attempts at blocking her number before he gave in and muted her texts- because every convo ended up the same.

[This is super important] Mei, 9:01 AM
It’s not that he wanted to avoid talking with her, she was a good kid!... It was her erratic schedule of messaging that more often than not came well after Nap o’ Clock, or I Wanna Sleep In AM..
So, with Mei being Mei and his phone number unlisted, Wukong only ever heard from MK when he made the once in a while call in lieu of using Mystic Monkey Messaging.
He was thinking of giving the kid a ring now, as it was almost half an hour past their scheduled meet up at his mountain for their (now mandatory) heart-to-heart talk and training. MK was hardly ever late to their sessions, and if he was, he at least gave a heads-up. It was starting to give the king a small, eensy teensy bit of emotion he couldn’t quite name.
Monkey King checked his phone again, and saw no missed calls or messages from his student, which only made the wiggling crumb of… something, settle deeper into his already hungry belly. No one would blame him for worrying about MK after everything that’s happened, but turning into an overbearing parent- which, no, could he call himself that? Was he allowed to?- wasn’t going to help. A nice snack, however, might do the trick.
Just as Wukong was walking into his kitchen to get some chopped peaches from his freezer to settle his stomach and redirect those thoughts, the Super Monkey Mech theme chimed out from his sash.
“Speak of the demon,” he chuckled with relief as he fished out his phone from the folds of his belt. Wukong flicked his thumb, accepted the call, and went rooting for his snack. “Hey bud! What’s the hold up?” he asked casually.
“Ah, hey Monkey King,” came a gruff, clipped voice. Wukong snapped straight up, a terrible move as he thumped his crown harshly on the inside of the freezer. Beyond the sudden discomfort as he held the top of his head, sucking in a breath through clenched teeth, was that shred of emotion now knotting his guts. “First off-”
“What’s wrong.” he interjected. The momentary pain was shunted away- now on high alert, he marched out of his house with purpose. He could hear a creaking noise beyond the grumble of Pigsy’s words.
“I’m trying to tell you- yes, MK, we ARE doing this.”
 “Is he hurt?”
“No, he’s not hurt. If you’d both stop-”
“Do I need to-”
“Would you two quit talkin’ over me at the SAME TIME?!” the irate pig shouted. Wukong halted his forward momentum right as his foot met the first step out of his home, only slightly taken aback, and his ears only slightly ringing from the outburst. There was a crackling sigh and a distant cough before Pigsy continued. “Monkey King, the kid’s fine. Sittin’ right next to me as we speak. Now listen before you come flyin’ over here. Please.” he groused.
“Alright, I’m listening.” Wukong deadpanned as he leaned on the railing of his porch, tail swishing.
Another cough met his ears before Pigsy spoke again. “Ok, I’ve got ya on speaker. Kid, say hi to Monkey King, SLOWLY, so he knows you’re alive.” Wukong wanted to jab right back, but for the moment he felt it would be a little tasteless on his part.
“Hey, Monkey King,” MK rasped after another small cough, sending a warning flag up in the monkey’s mind,  “Sorry I didn’t call. I couldn’t find my phone after, uh, I accidentally broke a couple booths at the sh, sh, sha, shop!” His words broke off into hacking, which quickly rose in pitch. What Wukong heard after the “Hu-geugh!” he would possibly describe as someone slapping their hand across a sound board.
There was shouting- probably Pigsy- some crunching, definitely property damage, and what sounded like glass breaking amongst the cacophony. That new insurance money was gonna go fast.
Wukong waited, eyebrows drawn low as curtains, as nothing but white noise and a withering groan came over the speaker. “Ummm,” he drawled after he heard neither pig nor kid speak up, “Eeeverything good over there?” the king asked, halfway expecting to not get a response.
A grunt was his answer. “Eh, not the worst it’s been,” said a very resigned sounding Pigsy. There was a noise of frustration, along with more wheezing that sounded like a laugh, and Wukong could practically hear the chef massaging a behooved finger between his eyes. “As I was sayin’, MK’s sick. His coughing is making his body freak out, and I need you to come pick him up and take care of him ‘til he’s feeling better. You’re gonna be able to help him more than me right now, and I’d like my shop to at least go one month this year without getting a remodeling.”
“Freak out? Like- No, wait- backtrack,” Wukong frantically waved his free hand, totally visible over the audio only phone call, “MK’s sick? Sick with what?” he asked urgently.
“It’s just a cold,” MK tried to assert, throat sounding strained, before he was interrupted by Pigsy gently shushing him.
“Kid, you’re a bad liar, and you’re gonna bust a lung at this rate.” he chided, though his voice was far warmer than it was before. Wukong waited for the chef to speak to him again, tail practically swatting a quick rhythm now as he listened impatiently to more shuffling. “Monkey King, just, come over. I’m not gonna be able to make MK budge without your help, and I think this is something you gotta see in person.”
At that he heard an overly offended ‘hey!’ that lost all of its power when the kid’s voice cracked. It eased the tension in his shoulders and abated some of the worry that replaced the foreign feeling from earlier. WIth a chuff, he said “You know, there’s this thing you’re using right now that I’m pretty sure can also take and send pictures, if the lens isn’t busted anymore.”
There was another noise of indignation from MK that bubbled off into a grumble, which was almost entirely obscured by Pigsy’s terse rebuttal. “Alright smart guy, I’m hanging up and helping the kid pack. See you in 10.” Monkey King gave an affirmative hum, tucking his phone back into his sash as the call disconnected.
He let himself droop and fold dramatically over the railing, deflating further as he released a long, suffering, groan. Wukong couldn’t see anything past the legs of his pants, but he heard the light tap-tap-tap of one of the monkeys coming around the porch. With a thump and a graceful landing, his subject sat on his back and let out a questioning chitter.
“Well,” he huffed, scrubbing a nervous hand through his mane. “Looks like we’re not gonna catch a break just yet.”
___________________
The trip over to Megapolis was as easy as any other day, and the 10 minute window gave Monkey King more than enough time to sort out his thoughts and get into his “Everything’s gonna be ok” mindset. Whatever MK had, it couldn’t be worse than being thrown through mountains, punched repeatedly, having the fate of everyone you know and love be put in your hands. You know, the usual!
Thinking about it now, he’s pretty sure he’s never seen MK actually sick-sick. He chalks that up to his successor being an overall healthy kid… for the most part.
Once he entered the city limits, Wukong hopped off his cloud and turned into a falcon, using the gratuitous amount of air pockets to speed over the neighborhoods and towards the food district Pigsy’s shop sat in.
From what he could see as he was approaching, nothing looked out of place; windows weren’t broken, no obvious holes in the walls, no paramedics waiting outside. There were a couple tables and chairs in a very sorry, never will house butts again state by the dumpster- which lined up with what MK mentioned earlier. Though a few easily replaced $25 chairs is hardly as destructive as rearranging entire city blocks in his opinion.
Opting for the quickest route and least likely to have furniture roadblocks, Monkey King dropped down onto the fire escape to enter via the window, which was conveniently already open.
With a flourish and a burst of light, he announced his arrival. “Alright, I’m here kiddooooooh, whoa.”
The kid’s modest apartment looked like it had been ransacked. The bed had a very obvious dip in it, and was very obviously pushed halfway up the opposite wall. MK’s TV laid morosely on its side, sans glass, and a broom and garbage can sat next to it like mourners- the can was also full of the former glass screen and what remained of the shelves the TV rested on. Books and DVDs were stacked out of the way, and what belongings that were still intact were pushed to the side to clear the floor.
MK and Pigsy were finishing up packing the kid’s duffel when he stepped through the window, which Monkey King now realized was entirely blown out and not actually open. His student perked up a little when he saw him, and offered a sheepish smile. “Monkey King!” he said suspiciously quickly, and wow, he looked like he had been caught in a windstorm. “Great to see you! Thanks for coming out, but you really don’t have to look after me.” he squeaked- squeaked!- while he held up his hands placatingly. Pigsy harrumphed and shoved MK’s duffel into his unoccupied arms.
Wukong leveled an unimpressed look at his student and crossed his arms. MK wilted. “You sure, bud? ‘Cause this,” he gestured to the battlefield formerly known as his apartment, “Seems a little beyond your usual organized chaos. I don’t think a simple cold would cause this much collateral damage.” he added casually.
MK broke eye contact and ran a hand along the back of his head, his face flushing the tiniest bit. That’s when Pigsy spoke up. “About that,” he started, grabbing Monkey King’s attention. “Remember what I said about MK’s body freaking out?”
Ah, right. Wukong nodded, signaling for the chef to continue, when MK put his hand on Pigsy’s shoulder.
“I’ll tell him.” he mumbled, sounding awfully weary. MK straightened up, but kept his eyes trained on the floor. He took in a rattling breath before speaking quickly. “I keep transforming whenever I cough or sneeze. I don’t know why. I was fine this morning, and then when I was cleaning the dining room, I just… bwoosh!” he illustrated with spreading his fingers wide in a mock explosion and grimacing. “And since then-” he coughed, and Wukong saw the ripple of gold light cross over his successor’s body. Pigsy tensed and grasped MK’s arm. His fake grimace turned into one of genuine discomfort and both adults could see him trying to hold back another cough. “Since then, I can’t stop. It’s so annoying.” he finished with a slight wheeze to his voice. That feeling Wukong couldn’t quite place before returned, and sat like a rock in his stomach as he watched MK struggle.
Pigsy’s face wore the concern and sympathy they both felt as he gently squeezed the kid’s arm. “It’ll pass, MK. You’ve got your family lookin’ out for ya.” he reassured warmly, and Wukong briefly darted his eyes away. The chef gave a few more comforting pats before he turned back to Monkey King. “MK’s already taken some flu medicine, the rest's in his bag.” he informed him. ”If ya need anything, or something happens,” Pigsy hesitated, “don’t be afraid to call. Kid’s got all our numbers.” Beneath those words, the stone monkey knew there was an unspoken plea.
Monkey King smiled and gave a mock salute. “You got it Pigsy. I’ll make sure he gets plenty of bedrest and doesn’t blow up any more rooms. C’mon bud, it’s time to recover at Flower Fruit Hospital.” That got an eye roll from MK despite the smile tugging at the side of his face.
With goodbyes traded and MK coming to a place of acceptance that yes, he would be going with his teacher, and yes, he will be taking a break, Monkey King stepped back out the window onto his cloud and hefted MK up beside him. He only balked a little bit before his teacher reminded him why riding his own cloud over to the mountain would be a bad idea right now.
Before they took off, MK looked back at Pigsy. “Thanks… both of you.” he mumbled- that sincere, special MK-branded smile on his face.
Pigsy smiled back, and Wukong patted the hand wrapped around his waist. “Anytime, kiddo.” he soothed. Monkey King shifted his stance to better brace against the oncoming wind, wrapped his tail loosely around his student for extra insurance- and in a flash, they were off.
The subtle wiggling at his back let him know MK was watching the noodle shop, until it was too small to pick out from the rest of the buildings and obscured by the low cloud cover that had rolled in.
___________________
It wasn’t until they were gliding over the open ocean that MK spoke again.
“Hey, um,” he tried to say over the roar of the wind. “Is your house gonna, you know, be strong enough?”
Wukong glanced over his shoulder and smiled cheekily. “It’s survived you and our friends for over a year, hundreds of years before that, and has wild monkeys living in it. I don’t think it'll be blown down from your super-sneezes now.” The effect of his friendly jab was immediate as MK let out a strange chirpy laugh.
“Heheh, you got a puh- point-” he started to wheeze, the golden light of his powers flashing over his body as he started to hack. Wukong felt his hackles raise with only a touch of mild panic.
“Hold on, kid!” he sputtered out, grabbing his arm and tightening his grip on MK. His student shifted wildly with each cough, making it harder to keep the firm grasp he had. Wukong watched helplessly as MK flipped through the transformations he had mastered so far- flacon, songbird, spider, falcon, spider- and with a disgustingly wet “Hwack!”, he turned into a gorilla.
The sudden weight shift made Monkey King’s cloud rock back violently, and he was forced to lean forward and throw out his arms to compensate- a move that usually would get him back in control, but with how fast they were going, and having huge gorilla hands partially obscuring his view, it only succeeded in tipping their combined weight too far forward. Pitched off the runaway cloud and both of them too frazzled to think quickly- student and teacher plunged into the ocean below, the latter yelling out “MK!” the whole way down.
As Monkey King surfaced with a gasp and a quick shift into a tortoise, he located MK- now back to his normal-ish self- and paddled over at top speed.
‘I was right,’ he mused morosely as he helped his successor grip onto his shell. ‘We are not catching a break today.’

Thinking about Monkie Kid S4 and need to share my thoughts n’ theories on something before I explode with excitement.
Spoilers of course, so click the read more if you want to see. It ended up being A LOT.
Tumblr media
This first part is about Azure Lion’s actions in the last three or so episodes compared to what we’ve seen with Sun Wukong.
When Azure Lion accidentally cuts the piece of the scroll Wukong’s sealed in due to PTSD flashback triggered by MK diving for the scroll piece, his immediate reaction is regret and remorse, but he tells MK that they were planning to release him once they took over heaven. An interesting and awfully convenient detail to admit after you accidentally sliced your former sworn brother’s prison in half!
Most likely he was going to release Monkey King, I think. The thing that sticks out to me is his shifting the blame to MK. If he hadn’t acted, hadn’t tried to save his teacher and friend, Wukong would be ok and Azure Lion would’ve tooootally let him go after! Because his word has been faithful to that point and he hasn’t already double-crossed, totally.
Which is also pretty damn dirty on his part. For what little he knows of MK, he hit him where it hurt with that, and poured salt on the metaphorical aggravated wounds. He then proceeds to take away the pieces and put them on his belt as some kind of messed up memento. Wukong is dear to both of them, but Azure Lion decides that he should be the one to take his tiny maybe-not grave, and MK has to see Monkey King be taken away from him for a third time.
Where this compares to Wukong’s actions is how they would’ve handled the situation. Past Monkey King would’ve shifted the blame away from himself too- because hey, everyone should’ve known what to do, not his fault! But the Monkey King we know now, whose grown and lived long enough to see all of the consequences of his past actions, would’ve taken responsibility. He would find a way to fix things and make it his sole problem to deal with. (Not a completely healthy way to go about it, but by comparison he has more self awareness)
Azure Lion has had the same amount of time as Wukong to see how his actions affect the future and affect those around him, but his takeaway is completely different. He’s been stuck on what happened to him and their brothers, how they “failed”, and doesn’t bother to think about what could happen if/when they did overthrow heaven. Revenge against his former friend and everyone in heaven has just about narrowed his focus, and thus clouded his judgement. He’s stuck in the past and in many ways stunted his own growth.
Which brings me to some bullet points.
“Sun Wukong isn’t that great either“- No, he’s 100% flawed and still reaping what he sowed over his lifetime, but he’s had growth, like a lot of growth. Taking partial/a whole lot of responsibility with MK and interacting with his friends more has helped him relearn what it means to be a part of a group, and MK has had a positive influence on him. As the lead(?) writer said on Twitter, he’s actively working on being more honest with MK, and is going to tell him everything. He wants to change and is trying to not let himself be held back from that by his past. Also he’s working on undoing everything’s he’s done that’s both directly and indirectly hurt others.
(Almost) everyone’s motivations against Monkey King- As I’ve seen several people point out, all the characters that have had a valid reason to hate Sun Wukong have shared their side of events, Wukong hasn’t. Presenting a very black and white picture on things.
(1) Macaque was scorned and abandoned, and wants his former sworn brother and best friend to feel even worse and be tortured by what he did. We know what he said happened, we saw how he saw Wukong delivering the killing blow, but we don’t see the strike connect, and he was shortly taken out of the afterlife/hell/the underworld by Lady Bone Demon. Revived to serve under her and give him a chance to get back at Monkey King- keeping his motivation going so he follows her game of chess to a T. It’s still very possible that Wukong didn’t kill him- the way he acted in Ep.9 in the first season when he sees Macaque suggests to me he thought Macaque slunk away after their fight to nurse his wounds and lay low for a loooong while. Macaque has also been pretty damn deceitful and used MK as his own pawn to secure his freedom (and also get back at Wukong.)
(2) Spider Queen wanted him to die and get him out of the way of her world domination, pretty simple revenge plot there. Dunno what else could be said for that.
(3) Lady Bone Demon was a person who sought to give mortals salvation from heaven’s actions and negligence, which twisted into wiping out everyone who walked all over those less fortunate and did not have the same privileges, and then just straight up total annihilation because everyone, at some point, would hurt others and make the world worse.
(4) Azure Lion, Golden-Winged Eagle, and Yellow Tusk Elephant. Sun Wukong’s brothers and former family. There’s a WHOLE lot there that Azure Lion is definitely leaving out on purpose (like his brothers were sealed away in the scroll to atone for their actions, but we don’t know what they did besides rebelling against heaven to earn such a punishment). He and his brothers make most of their hate about their leader turning their back on them and becoming part of the system/people that oppressed them. Valid reason to be upset and never forgive Wukong, because he either never told them what happened or he also withheld information. That said, the flashback of Wukong coming back with the JttW group is framed in a similar way to Macaque’s flashback- Monkey King comes in, there’s a fierce battle, and it ends with Wukong bearing down and hitting them with the staff. It’s even mirrored with MK’s fight against him, but we know MK was coming down to grab Monkey King and leave with his injured friends. Azure Lion could only see Wukong coming back to hurt him, and lashed out in the worst possible way, leading to destroying his friend and unable to take the blame.
The implications of Azure Lion taking the Jade Emperor down and becoming the new ruler of the Celestial Realm- Azure Lion and his brothers succeed at the current end of season 4, and he asserts himself as the new ruler. When he does, reality between all of the realms nearly tears itself apart, and we see Macaque, Nehza, and MK feel the effects of the sudden power shift. What that implies could possibly means their individual powers are affected, orrrr since they’re all celestial beings, their souls are linked to the Celestial Realm and they have some kind of sixth sense that alerts them to these changes. Now that Azure Lion has control and all of the powers of the Emperor, he might just attempt a total party wipe like Lady Bone Demon tried to do. Most definitely going to try to manipulate and take advantage of MK’s slew of commplicated feelings with his true origins, and what Monkey King has done to MK in the time they’ve known each other.
Now for theories/guessing what’ll happen in the S4 special.
Wukong tells MK very early on that his body can’t handle him overexerting his powers, and now that everything is on the line, again, and he’s lost Wukong, again, he may just tear himself apart to set everything right, and sacrifice himself so his friends survive and Monkey King can come back. We can see it happening now, after fighting his literal demons and intrusive thoughts personified, and triggering his transformation from a mortal to the celestial monkey he’s (possibly) always been. I’ll say along with that he might be having a hard time adjusting because he’s been away so long- from Monkey King, from Flower Fruit Mountain, his birthplace- and even though the staff unlocked most of it, his powers have laid dormant for a very long time, and he’s had a short time to train plus very little time to adjust having so much back all at once. Like a muscle that’s atrophied, he’s got to build it back up.
One of MK’s flaws is his tendency for self sacrificing, and while he does think of what’s important for his wellbeing, he still puts others before him, to his detriment. Carrying the trauma from everything that’s happened over the past year, he may feel that giving up his powers or his own life is what he has to do to set everything right and atone for the accidents he caused.
Azure Lion has literally gone godmode, and there’s not gonna be much he and his brothers can do to make up for taking it too far. It’s also very muddy, some morally grey areas, super emotionally charged. Also didn’t know where else to fit this but damn was he selfish for taking Wukong’s broken pieces away and threatening to break them even more if MK tried to fight him again. Like dude, wow.
MK won’t be alone, but he’s going to be facing a hard choice to make. If Azure Lion & co. walk away, he may just attempt everything again, and then they’re all gonna be living under the fear of brutal revenge for undoing someone’s very big mistake that they feel they had every right to do; Monkie Kid team doesn’t stop the cycle, and Azure Lion can continue to be willfully ignorant
Putting them all back in the scroll is a temporary solution and would be a little antithetical to everything our heroes have done so far. A punishment sure, but that also continues the cycle, and very little is learned. No matter what, Azure Lion will have to be kept from perpetuating the cycle of hurt and I don’t think they’re going to nuke him out of existence a la LBD. That would also not line up with everything they’ve done.
I sincerely hope we do see Monkey King bounce back like he did in the final fight against LBD, though there’s the chance if S5 happens, it’ll be the quest to restore Monkey King and MK has to figure things out on his own/with the assistance of a slightly calmer but still rogue Macaque. Angst, solving mysteries, and bonding galore! (but really Flying Bark, I will not be able to handle that. I want my cheesy but still very good resolution of Wukong coming back at the end and further paving the way for him and MK to bond and discover why he was created, and by who. I want to see these two catch a break and be happy! And grow as a family!)

Creature’s Comforts- Preview
Really jazzed with how this is coming along, so here’s a preview of the first chapter for my next LMK fic.
[Mei, pls only text me if its important :/] 8:55 AM
[Kk monkie dad! ⊂((*>⊥σ))⊃ Dragon horse’s honor (≧ω≦)ゞ] 8:55 AM
[Thank you] 8:56 AM

[This is super important] 9:01 AM
It’s not that he wanted to avoid talking with her, she was a good kid!... It was her erratic schedule of messages that more often than not came well after nap o’ clock, or I Wanna Sleep In AM..
It was starting to give him a small, eensy teensy bit of emotion he couldn’t quite name.
Monkey King checked his phone again, and saw no missed calls or messages from his student, which only made the wiggling crumb of… something, settle deeper into his already hungry belly.

“Kid, you’re a bad liar, and you’re gonna bust a lung at this rate.” he chided, though his voice was far warmer than it was before. Writing Scraps- Creature’s Comfort
I’ve found as I’ve started writing again that I go through two different openings before finding one that sticks, and I keep those on the doc in case I liked the previous one better.
Because I think these things are neat and it’s not quite the same as posting a sketch dump, I’m gonna share the stuff I don’t use and label them Writing Scraps for easier reference. With that, here’s two intros for an upcoming fic that I didn’t like as much but thought they’d be fun to share.
Opening #1-
Sun Wukong had seen sick mortals before. Seen sick immortals too- he himself had been severely under the weather several times in his very long life. The king could tell when a cold was from natural causes or a curse inflicted on somebody. Sun Wukong had also had front row seats for sicknesses that, to this day, leave him wanting to drag his eyes through dirt as some sort of solace to the disgusting images burned into his brain.
A thought that had only crossed his mind once in the past year was what would happen if his successor-turned-kid got ill, and that potentially disastrous line of intrusive thoughts only came about because MK told him of the cursed meatballs he ate when Wukong was away.
“So, did you actually win anything, or was that stunt purely for bragging rights?” he drawled as he leaned against a recently pulverized rock, one eyebrow quirked in a way that said 'This is hilarious and I am never letting you forget it’.
MK tapped his staff down firmly and squared up his shoulders, looking prouder than he had any right to be. “Well I had to set a new record!” he stated, before the proud stance melted into a more humbled slouch, and his student brought his hand up to rub the side of his face sheepishly. “Definitely not worth the city-shaking hiccups, or making Sandy go on a conveniently timed quest for the cure…”
Opening #2-
Sun Wukong liked keeping the technology he used limited. Not for any “The good old days were better” reasons, because indoor plumbing, WiFi, and video games are easily in his Top 5 list of best innovations and no one will ever pry those from his cold, stone hands.
It was strictly for his privacy. His lawyer had to fight him literally tooth and nail to get another computer- too many instances of people finding his one and only personal email years back had led to some very interesting letters. Letters that some lower deities would consider curses to the eyes for their content.
Because no, Sun Wukong will not be sending pictures of any kind to anyone, he will not look at any pictures his weirder fans send him, and he’d prefer to be stewed alive before he read another story that shared waaaay too much personal information.
Even with those very good reasons presented in a very professional manner to his lawyer, he was shot down.
“Handwritten letters from your Fortress of Solitude take ages to get here Wukong. I’m tired of playing Heavenly Messenger to get your approval for these licenses, Wukong.”. While he could’ve argued with that, after getting a new laptop and seeing how fast communication had gotten with computers, he conceded that it was a solid investment alone for getting his lawyer off his back. Now he just needed to answer those emails.
A laptop, a TV, and a gaming console were all he wanted. It was simple! Three easy outlets to enjoy the near infinite library of digital media, and an avenue for his contacts to message him and be promptly ignored.
Then MK became a part of his life again, almost two years went by, and now he had a phone. Arguments of ‘It’s helpful! We can contact each other without using monkey mind powers! I can send you all my favorite memes!’ wore him down faster than anything. Possibly because the kid also used the underhanded move of the puppy dog face combined with a little guilt tripping. Just dusted on top, like some guilty sugar.
