When adding alt text, remember that unlike when a screen reader reads a plain text image description, the screen reader will say "Image:" before it reads the alt text. It is not necessary to add "ID (alt text) End ID" formatting like with plain text ids, and that only creates annoyance for screen reader users who must hear alt text like "Image: Image of a cat" or "Image: ID: a cat. End ID" repeatedly. though, if it is important to say that something is for example a painting, then (a painting of a woman bent over a table making bread) as alt text is appropropriate.
tl;dr: when writing alt text (read by screenreaders and embedded in an image's code) it is not necessary to add brackets ([ID...End ID]) or to announce something is an image.

[video description: a tiktok being duetted by @/chuddnelius. the original video shows a dog sitting on a vet's table. there is text on the screen that says "Vet: “there is a 50% chance your puppy won't survive the weekend.”" @/chuddnelius says, "this better be something good." then, the original tiktok shows the dog at home, with "Tuesday" written above it. the music says "go little rockstar," and there is text on the screen that also says "go little rockstar." @/chuddnelius yells, "yeah, baby!!! yeah!!!" when the dog is at home on tuesday, he is staring up at the camera and wagging his tail happily. end ID.]

Hi, everyone! My friend @orange-airplanes and I have both been working to make our blogs more accessible spaces for everyone, and together we have created a doc for meme image descriptions! IDs are used to make posts accessible to a wide range of people, and we know how hard it can be to start writing your own. This doc is meant to let people copy and edit IDs of generic memes to take out some of the stress and effort of transcribing images by hand. It is open to edit so people can add their own templates with IDs, and we’re happy to hear suggestions about possible improvements! The doc will also contain a list of additional resources on image descriptions for further research.
Here’s the link! Happy transcribing!

if i add a description to your post you are 100% welcome (and encouraged!) to take that description and paste it into the caption of your original post. it will make the post accessible in the tags and searches! the whole point of descriptions is accessibility!

[video description: a tiktok by @/josephschles. it shows a doorway, and there is text on the screen that reads, “How to deal with toxic families during the holidays - life hack.” a man walks through the doorway with a covered bowl and says, “hi everyone, happy thanksgiving, i brought cookies!” voices offscreen say, “wow, you really gained some weight. save some cookies for the rest of us.” and “do me a favor and don't bring up your lgbt stuff tonight.”
the camera switches so it is facing the man's side. he turns to it, puts his hand towards his face as if he's whispering, and says, “they don't know that i know this hack.” he then turns towards the door and walks out. end description.]
This is a very powerful life hack.
#their bio said all pronouns but switching it up seemed like it would make the id confusing so. lmk if there's a best way to do this?#vid#tiktok#family problems#homophobia#fatphobia#tips#holidays#christmas#thanksgiving

icon description: a default tumblr icon; it is a circle that is mostly orange except for a crescent-shaped part of it that is dark blue, as well as two black dots that resemble eyes. it has a light blue background. end description.
if a post is here it's in the weird purgatory of posts that i think warrant the time it takes to write a description, but i don't care enough about them that i want them on my other blogs.
feel free to give feedback on how to make anything more accessible, to correct mistakes i make, or to send me posts in need of descriptions!
any advice or resources for image descriptions will be tagged ‘#accessibility’
#other main tags:#img#vid#gif#ph#twitter#tumblr#tiktok#reddit#meme#messages#(<- a list that is both incomplete and contains empty tags lmao)
