멘붕 - Mental breakdown

멘붕 is a combination of 멘탈 "mental" (/one's mental status) and 붕괴 "breakdown", "collapse" (/붕괴되다 "It has collapsed") and refers to how someone is frustrated and doesn’t know what to do or when something bad happens to you and your mental status plummets.

멘붕 can be used with a variety of verbs to form expressions such as 멘붕이 오다 (to experience a mental breakdown, to panic), 멘붕을 느끼다 (to feel frustrated) and 멘붕이다 (to be frustrating; to cause panic).

Example:

Q: 뭐 해?

= What are you doing?

A: 작업하던 파일이 날아가서 멘붕 왔어.

= The file I was working on got deleted so I’m in a panic now.

• It's used when the information in the second clause of the sentence is opposite or in contrast (also when it's unexpected) to the first clause.

Like "but" in English.

Examples:

= How's your job at the company?

= There are many things to do but the salary is small.

Hi I was looking at lyrics for a korean song, when i look at the translations the same phrase in english is translated to 3 different things in korean? i was just wondering if you can tell me the difference between the korean versions because i do not know anyone who knows korean..here they are: 금방 지나갈 소나기죠, 금방 지나갈 소나기, 그냥 스쳐 지나가는. dont worry if u can not help! just ignore this lol

1) 금방 지나갈 소나기죠.

금방 = Just, immediately, soon, quickly.

지나갈 = To pass, go by.

소나기/소나기죠 = Downpour, shower, rain shower.

그냥 = Just. (And other meanings but in this case 'just')

스쳐 지나가는 = To pass by.

Difference between 금방 of the first two sentences and 그냥 of the last one:

금방 → just now [time]

그냥 → just [feeling]

About that final -죠 that there's in the first one and not in the second sentence:

죠 is originally a shortened term for "-지요".

When you put it, it means you expect something to be true, or you think it's a given fact that you take it for granted.

Like when you ask someone "It's really sunny today, isn't it?" Or "It's such a nice place, right?"

N마다 | Once every | Every/all

~ 마다 added to time nouns expresses the repetition of the same or similar situation or a behavior over a set of period of time.

= "Every/Once" every in English

Example:

두 달마다 머리를 잘라요.

= I cut my hair (once) every two months.

~ 머리 can also indicates "all" or "every one" of something with no exceptions, added to the noun being described.

Example:

Focus:

~ 보다 indicates that the word preceding it is the standard from which a comparison will be made.

~ It's like "more... than..." or "-er than..." in English.

~ Even if 보다 is added to a noun to form

"N이/가 N보다 ㅡ하다"

the order of the subject and noun with 보다 added can be reversed with no change in meaning.

~ Plus, while the adverbs 다 and 달 are generally used together with it, they can be omitted.

Examples:

여름보다 봄을 더 좋아해요.

= I like spring more than summer.

비행기가 기차보다 빨라요.

= Airplanes are faster than trains.
