YES OMG I COULD TALK ABOUT THIS FOREVER! ZUTARA WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AS THESE OTHER TWO! To lump them together is to completely discredit Zuko’s character development throughout the show. Especially when you remember that he CHANGED FOR HIMSELF. It was purely for his own benefit, and his future. Which is the way it should be because it shows that the change is permanent and genuine.

Demonization of the Enemies to Lovers Trope

I find it very disingenuous when Zutara antis compare or lump Zutara with problematic ships like Reylo and Dramione. Anyone who makes a claim like this should have not any opinions about ATLA respected. Because they obviously did not watch the show.

There are major differences that set Zutara apart from Reylo and Dramione.

Zutara vs Dramione - Friendship

Zuko and Katara reconciled and became very close friends in season 3. Draco and Hermione disliked each other in canon and the best of their relationship was civility. Dramione could have served the same narrative function as Zutara by representing union after war but Dramione lacked the canon building blocks that Zutara had.

Zutara vs Reylo - Redemption

Zuko has a powerful redemption arc. But even when Zuko was an antagonist, he was never truly evil. And Zuko's actions towards Katara (eg tying her to a tree) were not completely monstrous. Zuko and Katara never crossed any boundaries while enemies. When Katara starts showing compassion to Zuko, it is in season 2 when Zuko is no longer an active threat (eg. offering to heal Iroh and their emotional moment in the catacombs). Compare this to Reylo where there are all these romantic undertones while Reylo and Kylo are still enemies. Kylo also has a worse record than Zuko: murdering his dad, oppressing countless people, killing civilians, and maiming people. And Rey for some reason, before Kylo does anything to deserve it, begins to feel sorry for him. Unlike Zuko, we don't see Kylo truly atone for what he did to Rey. Not to mention the abusive elements in their relationship such as Kylo calling Rey worthless.

The point is that people need to stop demonizing enemies to lovers ships. And stop lumping healthy ships like Zutara with more toxic ships like Dramione and Reylo. It's not a fair comparison.

Lucy haunts Snow obviously yes and there seems to be a consensus that Katniss reminds him of her and too a point also yes- but I would have to say it's Peeta that truly reminds him of her.

Katniss reminds him more of Sejanus imo but that's another conversation-

Peeta and Lucy are both charismatic and showmanistic. They can sway the crowd, make people feel what they want them to feel. Pity for them or joy or anger on their behalf. Point is they make people want to support them, to root for them.

But it's more than that- at their soul they are just good people. I don't have to explain how and why Peeta is good but I want to draw your attention to this detail about Lucy:

Snow was chasing after her with a gun in those woods and she manage to distract him by luring him to where he would be bitten by a non-venomous snake. Lucy knew her snakes, if she wanted to find one that was venomous and would kill him- she would have. But she didn't want him dead, she only wanted to slow him down. Even as Snow chased after her holding a gun. Even after she realized what he did to Sejanus. Lucy really did love him.

Lucy and Peeta both had a goodness that shined through the essence in their character and I know that infuriated Snow when he saw Peeta doing the same things with it that Lucy did.

Don't get me wrong, Snow's main attention was Katniss. She was his enemy; she was the one who viscerally hated the capitol and threatened the system -like Sejanus- but I can't help but think that Snow took pleasure in Peeta's torture and his corruption because he reminded Snow so much of Lucy.

Snow tried to destroy the good in Peeta, break it into nothing. Something he never got to do to Lucy.

Yet he failed. Peeta's inherent goodness still remained at his core and it didn't matter how much hijacking or torture he went through. That wasn't going be to taken away from him.

Katniss wasn't Lucy's revenge, it was Peeta.

okay I've been seeing people talk about how Snow got scared sh*tless when he heard Katniss sing the Hanging Tree in Mockingjay, which is true, but I haven't heard enough about how furious and terrified he must have been when he first heard Katniss sing to Rue, which is the same song Lucy Gray sang to Maude Ivory at the lake.

I forget if the Hanging Tree or the Meadow song was introduced first in TBOSAS, but that's the first song Snow heard. The first song of Lucy Gray's that Katniss somehow knew 64 years later. And she's not just humming it. She's singing it to Rue as she dies before covering her body in flowers.

And he must have known, in his bones, that Katniss was going to be the end of him. God, I love how the prequel explained why Snow was so blindsided and fixated with her instead of Coin.

Like? We know that Katniss and Lucy Gray are different people. They have different personalities and families. But to Snow, it really must have seemed like Lucy Gray came back to haunt him, and it started with Katniss singing Rue to sleep.

THIS IS A JEREMIAH FISHER STAN ACCOUNT! SHOW AND BOOKS IDC IDC . His family/the Conklin family do not care about him at all! He deserves to find a real family that appreciates him. Love triangle aside, no one ever really cares about how he feels. They see him as this laid back “sunshine” person but don’t care to really look beyond that. I will never understand why with Conrad everyone seems to understand his depth and emotions but that all goes out the window with Jeremiah? I’m not saying he’s perfect, he has his faults. At his core though he just wants his loved ones to be happy! Jenny Han he deserves his happy ending with a love story of his own. I want to see him happy and in love with a family that loves him back. Omg wait… that’s actually a fantastic fanfic idea. If Jenny won’t do it maybe I will. I’m not even that good of a writer but I’ll try. What do y’all think? I just love him so much y’all, he deserves better

i initially didn't want to talk about this scene bc personally i think it's been blown out of proportion but if you want to get real and talk about symbolism, I'll come to play.

For Belly's entire life, Conrad has been "the sun". She idealized him so much that all she could see was him and no one else could compare, leaving Jere in the shadows despite always being there for her (and literally being nicknamed "the sunshine boy")

So many people have tied this shot to that quote "For Belly, Conrad was the sun" and have understood the light here to be the sunlight radiating on Belly and Conrad. But the thing is—despite so many people's misinterpretations of the shot—it (he) is not the sun.

It's artificial lighting. It's not real.

He isn't the person she built him up to be no matter how many times she had convinced herself he was. She just didn't realize it immediately.

When Belly wakes up (that in itself could also be a metaphor), and she is able to think clearly and decide for herself what she wants and what she needs, she chooses Jeremiah. And what exactly happens when she does?

The sun shines on both of them. There is real sunlight bathing the shot because she doesn't idealize him and he doesn't idealize her, they see each other for who they really are and love each other anyway and that's what's real.

it's so important to me that it comes across that the sun shines on both of them. she didn't find a new sun, she didn't choose a different person to revolve her whole life around—she wanted the sun to shine down on her as much as it did her partner bc ultimately, she is now also choosing herself and what makes her truly happy.

So update on reading tsitp book one FINAL THOUGHTS (SPOILERS)-

I went into this book with an open mind, thinking that there was a pretty good chance of me being converted to team Conrad. Especially with the way people who have read the books talk about him.However I am happy to report that I am 100% team Jeremiah through and through. I’m sorry.

Jeremiah knew about Susannah’s cancer coming back, everyone did except for belly! They still were never horrible to each other. Jeremiah was also grieving and still never unfairly took out his feelings on anyone. While I completely understand that people grieve differently, it doesn’t excuse Conrad being so rude towards belly or anyone else. Nowhere that I read in that book did it even seem like Conrad likes belly as deeply as I’ve heard people say. I’m not doubting that he likes her, it was shown on his face when she confessed to him. However, he was just so rude and nasty toward belly. ESPECIALLY WHEN HE GRABBED HER AND SHOOK HER. That was so uncalled for, and while I know that belly was kind of pushing his buttons on purpose. She never would’ve said anything like that if she knew the truth. Furthermore, Conrad had no right to put his hands on her at all. Conrad calls her a little kid for still enjoying her summer, and gets mad at her instead of explaining what’s going on. They grew up together, romance aside the fisher boys should’ve told her. He doesn’t even have to be nice about it. Or if they weren’t going to tell her then Conrad should’ve known that it wasn’t her fault. He’s mad at the world for the hand they’ve been dealt. That’s completely justified. I’ll give him that his mom is dying, but his behavior and rude comments about belly(the comment about her wearing too much makeup PISSED ME OFF) are coming off as just pure malice sometimes, especially when they were younger. I know they used to tease her and stuff but Conrad just takes it to far sometimes. They are practically family and yet Conrad doesn’t care about her feelings. Even if he never liked her back, or didn’t want to be with her, he could’ve still been her friend. I mean you cannot deny that he must’ve known she had a crush on him. It’s just ugly to read the way that his comments and coldness towards her makes her feel. It makes it seem like some of those comments are on purpose, because he knows about the crush.

Not to mention the fact that their relationship has seemingly started with her comforting him and then kissing him in this really vulnerable state. They don’t even talk about their mutual feelings for each other or anything. I’m very sorry to the Bonrad fans but I really don’t see the appeal. Belly puts Conrad on this pedestal even when he could care less about Belly’s attention. Which I cannot stand because it leads to her treating Cam so poorly. All because she can’t stop thinking about Conrad or what he might think if her and Cam did X Y and Z. I understand that he might have a hard time expressing his emotions, but he doesn’t even try to be kind/civil to her at all. She cares so much about this boy and is still there for him even after how horrible he was. Where do y’all get this narrative that he cares deeply for her? I also understand that it’s his mother but she’s practically Belly’s mother figure as well. Conrad needs to fix the way he is treating Belly and Jeremiah. I’ve lost people close to me, I know how deeply that can hurt. However, no one is responsible for another’s grief. Just because you are grieving doesn’t give you the right to treat the people who love you like shit. It’s inexcusable. I’ll continue reading books two and three but it’s not looking too well for Conrad.

This has nothing to do with Jeremiah either, if he wasn’t romantically interested in Belly I still wouldn’t like Bonrad. I honestly don’t understand how anyone could be after book one. There’s no relationship there. Like I said before the show and the cast do a much better interpretation of the characters. I actually really like Conrad in the show (still team Jeremiah)but in the books it’s hard to even tolerate him. Hopefully it gets better. On to book two.

The Difference of The Summer I Turned Pretty Books

Spoilers for book 1

So I’m on chapter 41 of The Summer I turned Pretty (book 1) Was belly always this rude or am I reading it wrong? To me it seems like she doesn’t care about Cam Cameron at all (Which is totally understandable if she doesn’t like him). But some of the things that she thinks about him are so weird and rude, all because she’s angry at Conrad. Like she’s just using him. Like when he didn’t want to go skinny dipping with her and she said he was probably going to find a “a homeless person and become friends and then tomorrow he would tell me his life story” or something like that. She also thinks super rude things about the other girls in the books.

All because she has this huge crush on Conrad. Who by the way appears to be a complete dick in this book. The show actually made his character a lot better, and we understand why he was acting so horribly. The book however makes Conrad almost seem like a bully, even in the flashback memories when they were younger. It’s so different from the show. Which I knew it would be but WOW

I can say one thing for certain: Every single character in the book is better in the show. This is coming from a life longer reader. I always defend the book over the adaptation but Jenny Han is making it really difficult right now. Of course this may change as I keep reading but I just had to get this out there because I’ve never seen anyone talk about it .

Rina in Season 4- Gina Porter finally gets the love she deserves

OK so most people know that I have not shipped Rina throughout the show. In fact, I didn’t think that Ricky deserved Gina. After watching season four I can confidently say that Ricky definitely stepped up this season. It also started to fall into place all of his character development individually that has been built up .We see his struggles throughout the seasons, with himself and his relationships to the people around him. In season four it definitely feels like he’s actually putting what he’s learned into practice. And not just with Gina. He seems to be in a much better place and because of that he’s a much better person all around.

My biggest concern with Ricky and Gina’s relationship is that it always felt that Gina was putting herself out there and Ricky just never said what he actually thought. We can see in the show that he has had feelings for Gina since the very beginning but he never said anything.  Due to this, it left Gina feeling like he just didn’t like her. Moreover, it left her feeling like he could/did love her but was never gonna go for it. He said one thing and did another. Like she was being let down again but this time by someone she was in love with. That’s why I never wanted her with Ricky, because I was afraid he wouldn’t love her the way she loved him.

Thankfully, this season he proved me wrong. I have been rooting for Gina since season one. I have loved her character forever and have wanted her happy no matter what. To see Ricky finally treat her the way that she deserves and not fall back on old habits or past mistakes is so refreshing. To see him go all out for her and completely support her in everything that she does really rounds out his story. I mean, if you just pay attention to the way that Gina is literally glowing from being in a relationship with Ricky. How could you not support her or be happy for her?

That for me is what was missing throughout the first two seasons is not seeing Ricky‘s feelings for Gina. Then finally seeing them after she got with EJ really pissed me off, why now? You know ?That’s what kept me from shipping it in the 1st place. Gina is an amazing character and for me from that standpoint ,seeing her get hurt over and over by him. It just turned me off from the possibility of her ever being with him. However, now that I see the effort that he is put in to be there for her and to be the boyfriend that she deserves. I know see why people love this relationship so much. Honestly, like I said in my previous post I’m just so happy that Gina is happy because she deserves it so much.

Jeremiah after book 3 - SPOILERS AHEAD READ AT YOUR OWN RISK

So I said this in my previous post about Jeremiah’s letter, but I know what happens at the end of book 3. The one thing I wish Jenny Han would’ve done is give us a more well-rounded ending. The time jump was rushed in my opinion. Yes, we know that Conrad and Belly find their way back to each other. We actually get to read the letters that he wrote to belly while she was studying abroad. However, we don’t see or hear about Jeremiah after they called off the wedding. The last mention of him is that he smiled at belly as she was leaving and had brought a date to the wedding. We don’t know anything else about him, in book 3 we don’t even find out his major. I just feel like the whole series we got to see both boys and learn about them but book three we didn’t get much of Jeremiah outside of the relationship with belly. Does that make sense? I would’ve liked to see a mention of what he was up to. It makes him seem less 3 dimensional. Especially when we know that Conrad wants to be a doctor, that he still talks to laurel, that he sent belly letters, etc. it doesn’t seem fair to not give the readers what Jeremiah was up to.

But also kinda fun to theorize about, what do you think Jeremiah ended up becoming? Do you think he was Conrad’s best man? Do you think they truly repaired their relationship? Did belly and Jeremiah ever get to be best friends again?Do you think Jeremiah ends up with his true love or never settles down?
