Bokashi Composting Without Bran - Part 2: My Fond Galapagos Memory
Bokashi Composting Without Bran – Part 2: My Fond Galapagos Memory
Soon after completing my update post about Bokashi composting without using bran (LINK), I remembered how I first came across this method of composting.Although Bokashi method was initially developed in Japan, I first came across this method in Ecuador, Galapagos Island where I travelled as an environmental volunteer while a university graduate. I remember how the people there composted all of…

Bokashi Composting Without Bran - Part 1: Making EM-A Bokashi Spray
Bokashi Composting Without Bran – Part 1: Making EM-A Bokashi Spray
If worrying about continually buying bran is stopping you from giving Bokashi composting a go, then you’ve come to the right place. You can Bokashi compost without bran as long as you mix your food waste with effective microorganisms that ferment your food. In my previous post I explained how you can replace Bokashi bran with an activated effective microorganism (EM-A) solution. I have been…

When You Can Bokashi All Food Waste And When You Shouldn’t - Part 2
When You Can Bokashi All Food Waste And When You Shouldn’t – Part 2
In my previous post, I outlined the situations when you will be successful in Bokashi composting absolutely everything, including meat, fish and cooked food etc. In this post I will explain when you should Bokashi compost just the raw vegetable and fruit peels. I have been Bokashi composting for over 5 years now. I started from indoor composting, where I took my Bokashi ferment to a community…

When You Can and Can’t Bokashi All Your Food Waste - Part 1
When You Can and Can’t Bokashi All Your Food Waste – Part 1
I have been successfully Bokashi composting for 5 years now and have learnt a lot in the process. I have also experimented and succeeded in Bokashi composting without Bokashi bran. I started with indoor composting, taking Bokashi ferment to a community compost bin in central London. Then I moved home and was fortunate to be assigned an allotment plot where I have been Bokashi composting in…

Nature crafting: Frozen troll crown with bay leaves
If you have bay leaves (or any leaves) and looking for a nice easy crafting activity with your child who loves the movie Frozen, this post is for you!
It is pretty self-explanatory but here is how we did it.

Pick leaves (something like 10 but it depends on the head and leaf sizes). Just in case they have bugs, wash them and dry.

Cut a strip of paper about 8cm height and 70-80cm length (again…

Bokashi no dig bed after one year
Last year may I made this raised bed. The ground was so hard and I didn’t want break my back so I decided to make this bed as no-dig as an experiment. I emptied about two buckets full of bokashi ferment, put sheets of cardboard and chucked lots of stable manure (at the time I only had stable manure so that was what I used but it would have been better if I mixed with compost).
On this bed I grew…

Rhubarb Flowers
They are weird and wonderful but unfortunately if you want to eat your rhubarb, these flowers needs to be removed from the base of the plant as soon as they appear. This is so that all the energy will go to the development of the leaves and stalks instead of producing seeds. Here are mine. All removed. The plant ready to grow!

Bokashi and worm teas! They way you use them are slightly different: Bokashi tea needs to be diluted 1 small cup into 10 L of water to feed your plants. For worm tea, you don’t have to do worry too much about the dilution as it is not acidic. Just mix woth some water and give to your plants. Both of them are very beneficial for your plants! The smell? The Bokashi tea smells like apple cider vinegar. You can literally put your nose into the jar and it won’t smell rotten (if it does then something has gone wrong ind your Bokashi bucket). The worm tea smells like earthy almost odourless liquid (the dark brown on the right). So both of them would be a nice present for your plant loving friends. I’m super excited to use them this morning for my plants! #bokashi #bokashitea #bokashikompost #bokashicomposting #composttea #wormtea #vermicomposting #organic #sustainable #growyourown #gardeningtips #ecofriendly #earthfriendly #nodig #happiness #wormcomposting #effectivemicroorganisms #nomorelandfill #zeroplastics #nomorefoodwaste #originalorganicsuk @originalorganicsuk https://www.instagram.com/p/BzpWM8UHs_7/?igshid=tlzxhslw5lcx

This is a plastic free grocery display in one of the supermarket in New Zealand. And people are buying more from here than other plastic displayed supermarket. Totally understandable. We want more if not all the supermarket in the U.K. to do this (and not just in London but everywhere)! Bokashi composting is perfect if you can’t get rid of the food waste frequently. I can keep the food like this for 2 weeks after the bucket is full and I don’t need to worry about the food rotting or smelly. I can get the Bokashi tea which is also good for the plants! #bokashi #bokashicomposting #bokashicompost #earthprobiotic #nomorelandfill #organic #sustainability #sustainable #effectivemicroorganisms #EM #goingzerowaste #zerowaste https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt2-mOEnxY8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1bqnmd95qk6to

Homemade vegan scones! Super fluffy and amazing!!! Used @bbcgoodfood Recipe. Just swapped butter and milk to plant based alternative. Didn’t use egg wash. For the best result use food processor if possible . https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/4622/classic-scones-with-jam-and-clotted-cream No need to pay lots of money for cream tea. You have the best one and you won’t believe it’s vegan. #cooking #baking #scones #sconesrecipe #vegan #veganscones #yummy #bakeyourown #veganrecipes #bbcgoodfood #savetheplanet #veganfood #veganuary #allergyfreefood #allergyfree https://www.instagram.com/p/BsOo1JXn2zK/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=145vkkynqz29u

Upcycle and recycle what is already made by plastics. My handmade recycled plastic dish scrub. I’m not going to buy fish sponge anymore ever. This is much more efficient to clean dishes and longer lasting. Why didn’t I do this before? Spread the word so we can all reduce plastics together! How to make dish scrub using recycled materials - and it’s better than using an ordinary sponge!
How to make dish scrub using recycled materials – and it’s better than using an ordinary sponge!

Dish scrub sponges are plastics and they are bad for the environment in every way. They also harbour bacteria and they don’t last. Why have I been using them for so long?
There are lots of natural alternatives for dish scrubs. And I am sure they are good. But my objective is to recycle what is alreay produced rather than buying new things. This way not only we could reduce sending waste to…
