"London Underground" Oscilloscope VLF by Usurp + Disinformation (Poulomi Desai + Joe Banks)
This artwork created in 2013, is a collaboration between Poulomi Desai (Usurp) and Joe Banks (Disinformation) inspired by their project entitled "London Underground" from a commission awarded to Poulomi Desai by Gary Stewart of INIVA in 2009 and exhibited at Rivington Place, London as part of "Liminal". The oscilloscope visualisations featured in this video render the sound from the audio-track of the video exhibited by INIVA. See: http://youtu.be/YoVrd7aM8cI
More info: www.usurp.org.uk
Between 1998 and 2009, art project Disinformation recorded and published a series of Very Low Frequency or VLF radio artworks, which consist of recordings of electromagnetic noise radiated by the electric rails powering various forms of urban transport and underground railway systems. The 1st of these recordings appeared on the Disinformation "R&D2" CD, published by Ash International in 1998, the 2nd & 3rd, entitled "London Underground" and "Bexleyheath to Dartford", were recorded in 2002 and appeared on the Disinformation "Sense Data & Perception" CD, published by Iris Light Records in 2005. The Wire magazine described "London Underground" and "Bexleyheath to Dartford" as "fascinating... like electron microscope images". See BBC Radio Four interview: http://youtu.be/xoMKR_OH3GM
Poulomi Desai of Usurp proposed  a new version in 2008, combining VLF recordings with simultaneous video, made en-route to the Dislocate exhibition at Souzouzukan 9001 in Yokohama (thanks to Emma Ota). In 2009 further VLF + video versions were commissioned by Pixel Palace for exhibition at Tyneside Cinema (thanks to Ed Carter), and a VLF + video version of "London Underground" was commissioned by Iniva for exhibition at Rivington Place. The original VLF + video versions of this concept are also published and documented on You Tube.

More info: www.usurp.org.uk. The International Institute of Visual Art (INIVA) commissioned Poulomi Desai of Usurp to produce a film for Iniva's Liminal exhibition. This became a collaboration with Disinformation, based on Disinformation's London Underground audio project initiated in 1997 and Poulomi Desai's visual input for the Tokyo Underground commission in 2008. Poulomi Desai and Joe Banks filmed a simultaneous visual landscape of the London Underground from the suburbs to the centre with Very Low Frequency electromagnetic recordings creating a dual screen presentation. More info: www.usurp.org.uk. Tyneside Cinema commissioned this recording of electromagnetic field noise radiated by electrical systems in the Tyne and Wear Metro, for exhibition as part of a season of short films by art project Disinformation, that ran in their full size art-deco "Classic" cinema in February 2009. The season also featured the "Fire in the Eye", "Stargate" and "Kwaidan" films by Disinformation, and live footage of Disinformation and Strange Attractor performing "National Grid". The video version was proposed by Poulomi Desai for the Dislocate exhibition at Souzoukukan 9001 in Yokohama in 2008. A prototype audio version of this concept was published on the Disinformation "R&D2" CD in 1997, with the fully realised version being recorded in 2002 and published on the "Sense Data and Perception" CD in 2005. Thanks to everyone who came along to the opening event and special thanks to Emma Ota and Ed Carter. http://www.youtube.com/usurps

Raga Radiophonic - Kinetic radio recordings. Part 1. More info: www.usurp.org.uk
Live, kinetic radio recordings and electronic Rangoli lightbox installations - an acid house, noise influenced, hypnogogic meditation on Kali Yuga.  The harmonics / fluctuations / glitches are all part of the live radio recordings created directly by the electronic changes in the light patterns. Part of a series of six experiments for gallery exhibition. These pieces stem directly from ongoing research by Joe Banks with radio, VLF and surrounding electrical pulses, and Poulomi Desai's experiments with light since the 1990's. An homage to India's humanists and radicals with love. Best listened to loud with headphones. **If you are interested in exhibiting this work and others in the series, or want more information, please contact Usurp on youtube or at http://www.usurp.org.uk** © Joe Banks and Poulomi Desai 2011. Usurp + Disinformation - सूर्य किरण - Surya Kiran*
Headphones or external loudspeakers essential More info: www.usurp.org.uk. Copyright © Joe Banks & Poulomi Desai 31 Oct 2011 The Canadian psychologist Albert Bregman's theory of Auditory Scene Analysis describes how the human mind is able to identify, focus on, isolate and extract streams of actually or potentially meaningful sound information, which it recognises as emanating from discreet sources, using analysis of what amounts to the musical content of specific "melodic streams" within environmental noise. In terms of evolutionary biology, the theory suggests that our capacity for appreciating music may have evolved at least in part as a by-product of the mechanism that enables us to identify sound-streams that come from, say, a distant river, particular types of bird-song, or the call of a potentially hostile predator etc; and in human communications this faculty is most obviously in evidence as a contributory factor in enabling us to perceive individual speakers in crowded social environments (the Cocktail Party Effect). In terms of everyday experience, the isolation of such streams may seem deceptively simple, but in information theoretic and signal processing terms, the level of computational power required to extract such invariants* from the distorting influences of complex and rapidly-changing real-world sound environments still challenges engineers and computer scientists. Problems associated with extracting invariants from noisy environments are of particular relevance to air traffic control, military fighter and helicopter communications and battle management systems. Generalities aside, the soundtrack used in the Disinformation + Usurp "Sun Rays" film is a direct recording of the real sound-ambience of the film's location, "composed" using sharp graphic-equalisation only, to reproduce the subjective experience of the melodic streams that were perceived in the extraordinarily atmospheric ambience of that underground space (Joe Banks, IMCC Westminster, 1st Nov 2011). *The term "invariant" was coined by the American psychologist JJ Gibson

Circuit Blasting at Future Fusion, The Green Carnation Club in Soho, London
More info: www.usurp.org.uk. Live "Circuit Blasting" by Poulomi Desai (Usurp Art) and Joe Banks (Disinformation) and at DJ Nikki Lucas's club "Future Fusion" at The Green Carnation club in Soho London. The Guardian journalist Ben Goldacre described "Circuit Blasting" as like "extreme sports Circuit Bending".  Like a kind of Turing Test for electronic music fans, "Circuit Blasting" is a form of Autodestructive art performance and parody of the Circuit Bending music genre, which, instead of using subtle, intricate and delicate rewiring of electronic musical instruments to create novel forms of experimental music, cuts right to the chase and simply gives the instruments 30,000 to 40,000 electric shocks instead, triggering all kinds of spontaneous "generative" music. Originally conceived as a performance by Mark Pilkington (Strange Attractor Journal) and Joe Banks, from a tip by chemist and artist Richard Brown, who had in the early 1980's accidentally zapped a casio keyboard with a violet ray device to produce some interesting effects.  Headphones recommended. Thanks to DJ Nikki Lucas and all the clubbers for their participation.
