Finding new stuff to read is fun, but the thing I hate most about finding a seemingly fun fantasy or history series is how often the end seems to just be a return to the bleakness of the real world. Take away the magic. Have every single character get heteronormatively married and have kids. Remind the reader that all of the friendship and creativity and righteousness that served as sources of strength in the story are no longer necessary so everyone can just become the embodiment of a boring social role.
It’s not that it lacks a place, but there’s a difference between letting characters go on to do other things and just canceling out all the fun. Was it really so wrong for the audience to enjoy the worldbuilding? Can’t some of the characters stay quirky even after the main events?

(DnD thing) I’m not likely to use this for a very long time, but would it be too cruel if I homebrewed harmful algae blooms and mosquito-borne illnesses and dropped my players in a swampy environment with lots of difficult terrain? I only get them when our regular dm wants a break, and I’m working really hard on convincing them nature can be every bit as menacing as the npcs.
Anyway. What I’m thinking is I should make a ref table of 6 types of algae they can get into depending on luck and each one can cause different problems based on the type of toxicity it has. Neurotoxic algae would be different from hepatotoxic algae, etc. I think at least one should be a magic alga because it’d be so sad if there weren’t any magic algae in a magic world. And I could color code them just to keep things simple.
But the trick is figuring out how severe the effects should be to keep things balanced, you know?

The ocean is a perfect way to understand mysteries.

Most of them aren’t really mysteries. You just have to think really deep before they start making sense.

And when you bring the answers to the surface to show to other people, they turn into blobfish.

I like algae, but it would be ideal if the harmful blooming wasn’t such a complication.

The happy realization that I am no longer a weird girl, but a weird adult woman. Evolving into more powerful forms until one day, I’ll be able to corrupt even the most normal people. I know they want my cookies, even more than those grody store-bought ones on the dark side.
