Let's talk about Jump GIGA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jump GIGA covers, 2016-2024. Volumes are published (left to right per row) as Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn releases, with 2018 and 2019 briefly breaking the pattern by having three Winter and three Summer volumes each. 2023 has an Early Spring volume in addition to the standard four.
So, people have pointed out that the 2024 Spring cover is, uh, not like other covers.
But I've only seen comparisons to other MHA GIGA covers and MHA Weekly Shonen Jump covers. Out of curiosity for what GIGA's typical marketing aesthetics might be, I put together a comparison between all of Jump GIGA's covers to date.
And, um. Some things stand out, to say the least.
First, let me clarify what Jump GIGA even is: it is a seasonal magazine from Shonen Jump, published separate from Weekly Shonen Jump. SJ is an absolutely massive brand and they have a number of magazines serialized outside of the most well-known weekly magazine.
The content of Jump GIGA is primarily made up of one-shots and spin-offs. From the beginning, a lot of the appeal has been the cool cover illustrations which showcase special merchandise that comes with the purchase of GIGA. Usually the cover also promotes big things going on related to the WSJ series, like movie events, new games, or special figurines for sale.
The marketing aesthetic has been clear from the start: the cover consists of one core illustration and a number of ads surrounding it. Most often you get a cover illustration of a protagonist, and then ads and merch for other series, e.g. Food Wars protagonist cover with One Piece film promotion and Haikyuu!! merch.
The purpose of this marketing direction is pretty obvious. Spin-offs and one-shots are not likely to generate a ton of interest consistently, so they lure people in with the cool covers and tempting limited edition merchandise of the series they already know and love. In this way, highlighting one series with the cover and different series with the merch makes sense, because maybe somebody doesn't care about Food Wars, but they definitely want those Haikyuu!! stickers, stuff like that.
Starting from 2020's Autumn volume, you can see a shift. For the first time, basically all of the merchandise is for the cover series. The Demon Slayer manga had already ended five months earlier in May, but a two-chapter spin-off was scheduled for release in WSJ during October. This GIGA was released exactly one day before the second chapter was published and it capitalizes on the hype.
After this point, only MHA and Jujutsu Kaisen dominate the cover and the merch in quite this way, with Black Clover getting attention last volume as a way to highlight the fact that it actually switched syndication from WSJ to GIGA.
Anyway, most commonly the cover illustration is a solo shot of a core cast member (usually but not always the protagonist), and if it's not a solo, it's a big cast illustration.
Only a few covers focus on two characters, and usually it's a crossover as opposed to characters from same series sharing the limelight.
Tumblr media
Here we've got Food Wars' protagonist with the main characters from Dr. Stone and Act-Age.
The two covers most similar to the Izuku & Kacchan cover are 2022 Winter and 2023 Autumn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Winter depicts the main trio of Blue Box in a seasonally-appropriate aesthetic. Not gonna lie, this one kinda makes me laugh--Blue Box is a romance and sports manga, and even though Christmas has a romantic air to it in Japan, instead of depicting any sort of like, hesitant but hopeful romantic energy between the heterosexual couple that actually get together later in the series, they focus primarily on the two girls being cute with the guy is a wee footnote? I mean, all right.
Meanwhile, Autumn depicts one of the protagonists with the series antagonist with a typical cool action style. I'm not very familiar with JJK, but I hear these two have got Some Drama going on, so, there's that.
The merch itself has also evolved over the years. Stickers and posters were present early on, but they have since expanded to decorative folders and now acrylic stands and coasters. 2021 Summer sees the first time the cover illustration is marketed as merch, with the Jujutsu Kaisen cover included as a decorative folder.
Right after that, the Kacchan cover of 2021 Autumn is included as a poster alongside earlier covers featuring Todoroki and Izuku.
2023 Summer's cover is a huge, wrap-around MHA cast illustration and it was published three days after chapter 396 came out, strategically timed to highlight the big shift in the final battle as Ochako vs Toga ends and All Might vs. AFO begins. Merch includes a decorative folder of the wrap-around cover and character motif stickers.
And then we get this!?
Tumblr media
A duo cover illustration where the cover art itself has been merchandised to hell and back!?!?
Acrylic stand and pin set!?
Tumblr media
Double-sided coaster showing bkdk greatest hits!? With volume 29's river scene cover!?
Tumblr media
There's also a double-sided poster featuring the Spring cover with the ninth popularity poll art and a decorative bag with the anniversary art. The cover art itself is plastered all over the volume, front, back, and spine, apparently a total of 19 times.
I honestly don't know what to say about this. It feels wild that this is actually what the cover is. Obviously it is a huge marketing push in anticipation of season 7, and Izuku and Katsuki are the most popular characters, but. it just feels... unique.
In the course of Jump GIGA's publication, this direction is kind of unprecedented. Genuinely no one could have expected this. This seems to be the first time there's been this much merch for a cover. And it was a solid fucking move, marketing-wise--it's sold out basically everywhere, everyone is talking about it. And even people who don't follow the series or ship these two can't help but comment on how strikingly romantic it looks!?
I don't know how much say Horikoshi had in what the cover was, but damn it sure feels like he drew this with immense affection. I kind of wonder if he personally pushed for it to be these two, rather than the typical solo shot, cast shot, or even a protagonist vs. antagonist shot.
I'm KO'd, man. idek if this post is useful to anybody I'm just on my hands and knees here.
Everybody knows what we're all here for, and it's these cute boys finally getting their happy ending.

Random ask, do you love sherliam and hualian because somehow their dynamics remind you of kurofai?
If not, can I ask what about those 3 ships that made you love them and can made them became your hyperfixation?
I don't know if any are necessarily because of the other, so much as that I apparently have a type in ships. It's usually a retrospective realization: not "Oh, I like this because it reminds me of Kurofai" so much as "Huh, that ship also turned out to be a bit like Kurofai and I love it, that keeps happening."
I think I'm just a sappy romantic and I like stories about devotion and dedication and loving sacrifice and hope. Hope hope hope. We have these three characters (Fai, William, Xie Lian) who initially may seem quite light-hearted and cheerful but are so deeply wounded. They're all fundamentally alone in some way, whether literally or just in shouldering a burden they don't allow others to share. They're all clever and powerful and dangerous and also absolute dorks. They're all traumatized orphans with suicidal tendencies. And they all have a pivotal moment where it would seem so obvious for the story to end, and end sad (Celes, the Tower Bridge, Hua Cheng's dispersal) but instead, every time, love saves the day. The men who love them refuse to let the stories stop there. They are determined to rewrite the ending, no matter the risk to life or limb. (Though in Xie Lian's case maybe this is as much that he refuses to believe the story ends there, and his belief is rewarded.)
And. After all the drama and all the blood and all the pain, all three ships end up so damn domestic, and I adore that. They're all friends first and foremost. They're all pairs who you just know have a plethora of inside jokes and dance in the kitchen while they cook. They all know things about each other that few/no others have been allowed to know.
Also they all are either established as or have high potential to be badass Battle Couples, and that's important. 😆

Can I ask your top 5 fav (fictional) books of all time? Thx :D
Hi, thank you for the ask! :)
This one is really difficult because I'm really picky with my reading so I don't really read that often. I already read a lot of stuff with my job anyway... But I love buying books 'cause yeah, I'm an Editor, and I usually want pretty book editions that I'm never gonna read 😂
Ok so I wouldn't say these are my favorite books of all time, but some of the books in this list are books that I really enjoyed for their unique stories, good writing or world building! To no surprise here, there are no french books on my list... I guess I like authors like Maupassant probably 🤷🏾‍♀️ Special mention to "Le Horla"!
1) Aristotle and Dante Discover The Secrets Of The Universe
2) The Maze Runner
3) Every Day
4) Ender's Game (it's one of my favorite sci-fi books, but the author is apparently homophobic so idk what I feel about this anymore. I still wanted to put it in my list because it was a huge favorite of mine)
5) Harry Potter (I hate J.k Rowling now, but this book series was my childhood and was what encouraged me to write when I was a kid. I wanted to answer truthfully. Now that I'm a grown woman, I don't think I enjoy her writing as much as I used to though.)

Thanks for answering my ask before. If you don't mind me asking (again), can I ask, what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......
Tumblr media
Welcome back!😊 Don’t worry: I‘ll answer anyway 🙌
(Side note: top 7 OR✨ 10?😂 Oddly specific^^)
1. Star Wars
Aside from the obvious things like lightsabers and force powers, I think what pulled me into the SW universe is the simplicity of it, espeically in the OT: good vs. evil, a hero‘s call to adventure and his responsibility to save the galaxy from the evil clutches of the Empire, the power of friendship, the whole concept of the force, the strength to not succumb to the dark side, to stay true to yourself even if it costs you your life, the idea that the good things in our life are things we have to work hard for while the bad things are easy and faster to obtain and oh so manipulative and tempting. It seems to address a truth we can all relate to or are at least aware of. Luke Skywalker is someone I can look up to. And sometimes I can't ask for more.
2. Harry Potter
Always. To this day the Harry Potter books and movies feel like you're coming home after a long time abroad. The world building has always made me feel like it could be true: there could be a wizard society existing right next to our own. Just the sheer richness of characters, places, magical items and wizard life were enough to draw me in as a kid. It’s childhood preserved in book form. It’s fun in the first school years and tragical in the last ones. It’s a world that feels lived in. It’s a tale about the power of friendship and about facing things you actually don’t want to face. It taught me to be brave and kind and that striving for power is a path towards loneliness and a hollow, ego centric existence.
3. Naruto
I fell in love with the premise pretty early on when I started watching Naruto: the question of what makes a shinobi a shinobi, how can you be a good shinobi and a good person, are you only allowed to be loyal to your village? What about your friends and family? Why do we have to kill each other? Why is it human nature to be cruel and violent? Naruto asked so many existential and moral questions which I find interesting to explore. Then we have the idea of chakra and how its used, different jutsus and fighting styles, shinobi villages, the struggle between being a human being, the hardships of the shinobi life and how to overcome them and what happens to those who dispair and choose a life of darkness. The messages about friendship, family, loyalty, unconditional love and to work hard for your goal no matter what everybody else says, hit me hard. I will always come back to read or watch Naruto.
4. One Piece
Apart from the world building, which is one of the best in modern literature, I think what made me fall in love with this manga/anime are its characters, the humour and Oda's storytelling ability, which has been consistently brilliant for all those years. The world of One Piece with all its crazy characters and rules shouldn't work but it does, because it's not all fun and games and silliness but it means something. It means something to the characters. There are themes in it I will never get tired of: following your dreams, working hard, loyalty, friendship, we don't abandon our friends or dreams, we stick together no matter what. Oda knows how to balance comedy, tragedy and adventure perfectly. He knows also how to do setups and how to cash in the payoffs at just right moment. You as a reader are allowed to follow the bread crumbs and think and I appreciate it that he doesn't spell the things out for us.
5. The Lord of the Rings
I read the books and I've seen the movies more than I can count. It's my ultimate love. It's something I can pop in at anytime, under any circumstances and be completely emersed in it within seconds. It feels like home. It is home. The world building is rich and complex. The characters are loveable and more nuanced than they might let on. The story has timeless themes that transcend cultures, age, gender: chaos and darkness are tempting and destructive, but you not only have the responsibility to stand against it but also you have the ability to do so. It's a story about sacrifices, will power, love, friendship and hope. It seems to touch something within us. It leaves you with the comfort of this one single thought that there are higher powers or a grand plan involved.
6. True Blood/ The Southern Vampire Mysteries
This book series hit me once my girlish enthusiasm for the Vampire Diaries and its repetiveness slowly started to fade away but my hunger for vampire stories was still as big as ever. I thought I gave it a shot and boy, did it hit me. I think I read the first 4 books within a week. I absolutely liked that Sookie wasn't a teenager anymore but in her mid twenties when the first book picks up her story. The way she sees the world was exactly my kind of humour but mature and that was a welcome suprise after all the teenage drama in TVD. Her problems were how to pay for the gas for her car or for a new driveway. And of course that she can read minds. Charlaine Harris also made her vampires different enough but also used common tropes. It was a blend of the old and the new. She imagined how vampires and humans would live together in the modern world and she slayed on that part. I loved Sookie and I loved Eric. They were the main reasons why I kept reading.
7. A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones
The richness of the world building and the characters is what made me fall for the TV series and later the books. I think I started to watch it once the third seasons was rolling around. Like most, I did like the approach of "let's make it high fantasy but with an overdose of reality and history to it". That was brilliant. George knows how to write interesting characters, who aren't entirely bad or good but just brutally human. He also understands setup and consequences but above all he understands people. You know somebody is writing bloody good characters and plotlines if your are not mad at the author but at the characters for the choices they are making. You always understood why characters did the things they did, even though it didn't make it any less heartbraking at times. I don't think that George is ever going to be able to bring the series to a satisfying conclusion. The fantasy genre follows specific rules and George broke them to create something new. But he will come to realize that he now can't use these rules to finish the series. It's not going to work.
8. The Mummy (1999)
The cinema and movie nerds among my friends are always making fun of me for liking this movie as much as I do but I can't help it. It's the only successful Indiana Jones movie without Indiana Jones in it. Just the perfect mixture between adventure, horror, romance and comedy. How many times I'm quoting lines of this movie on a daily basis is insane. It's another unconditional love of mine. I'm going to keep watching it till the end of my days. We know that O'Connell and the gang are going to defeat the mummy but how they are doing it is so much fun. Brendan Fraser is a national treasure and just perfect for playing a brave, good looking, slightly ruggish adventurer, with the right amount of humour sprinkled in, who falls hard for the bookish girl. Like, come on. That's enough to sell me on any movie. Him and Rachel Weisz are just hitting it of. This film just feels like a warm cup of cocoa with a lot of cream. It makes me laugh, it makes me gush over Rick, it makes me want to learn acient Egyptian and run off into an adventure.
9. Once Upon a Time
Ten years ago I was so addicted to this show. I liked this idea that because of a spell from the Evil Queen all the fairytale characters have been forced to live a normal life in modern day America and they don't even remember who they are, apart from the Evil Queen. It's a classical the "Chosen One"/Heroes story with a little twist, that the relationship between most of the fairytale characters shifts during the story or was even told differently from how the audience remembers it from their fairytale books. It's basically a criminal investigation about who did this to these characters and how the protagonist can reverse the spell. Besides it's a story about fate, about love, friendship, about how villains and heroes are made and that things aren't just black and white. The characters are complex and because of this setup you can throw them in various scenarios, which made for some surprising teamups (Rumpelstilzchen/Belle). I was never bored with this show. Although it had complex themes at times the show handled them familyfriendly and that just fitted the overall fairytale vibe and wholesomeness of the show perfectly.
10. Band of Brothers
This HBO mini series about the story of E Company of the 101st Airborne during WWII stole my heart. I like war movies and if I had to explain why then I'd say because it reminds me of what was and what could easily happen again. The horrors of war, the sacrifices, the tragedy, the generational trauma, the loss, the heroes, the defeated, how quickly we forget our humanity once the bullets start flying, but also the little moments of friendship and will power that keep us alive. Band of Brothers has all that. It's based on real events and real people and although some things are dramatized for the sake of film making, they managed to stay quite accurate. You get to know these men and you get to see them struggle, in pain, laughing, joking, crying, die or survive. It makes you smile and breaks your heart in the next second. It's a series that captured me from start till finish.

Thanks for answering my ask....
If you don't mind, can I ask something from Merlin BBC? What do you think are Merlin and Arthur’s greatest personality strengths and weaknesses? Why? What do you love about their dynamic? Sorry if you've answered these questions before.....
P.s
Also, If you don't mind me asking (again), can I also ask your top fav characters and fav moments from the series (Merlin BBC)...? Thanks if you want to answer....
Hi! Np, I enjoyed answering it.
I think they both have a lot of empathy and love for others, I'd say that's pretty great for medieval men tbh. But Merlin at some point focuses most of his empathy and love into Arthur, he seems to become quite numb to everyone else's suffering. Which is what I would say was his weakness. His tunnel vision, that he didn't see the full picture. Most of this is because of the people around him, Gaius, Kilgarrah, etc. They made it seem like he had no choice in his destiny. But also that he had to do it alone. I think Arthur made him feel less alone, and he held on to that. In a way that sort of becomes obsessive, but mainly because, like Arthur needed someone to see him for himself, Merlin also needed that.
For Arthur, I wouldn't say that his weakness is that he's too trusting. It's more that he seems to be running away from learning a lesson, because moving forward from that would be very difficult. Which is totally understandable. But he likes his safe bubble, which incidentally, Merlin created for him. Although, Arthur does think differently, when given a chance, he's willing to put aside his views on magic, to try and make up his own mind. So he's not entirely running away from the lesson, but he's picking and choosing the bits he's comfortable with. But with magic, most of it has been negative, and I think he realises that it's a vicious cycle.
Well, now that I have to think about it, outside of the edits without their context. Their relationship is a bit toxic, but I would say that it's genuine. They do care about each other. Up until season 4 Merlin has pretty solid morals, apart from forsaking Mordred and a few actually evil people, he didn't really hide who he was personality wise or change himself for Arthur. But after season 4, when it got dark, it was a bit more imbalanced.
I hope that makes sense. I think I got a bit carried away with the thinking so it's a bit jumbled 😅
I obviously like the main four characters. Gwen's personality made up my formative years lol.
We don't get much of all of the knights, so I'd say Lancelot was pretty interesting. He had to be to be killed twice. Leon. Gaius is a puzzle. He's obviously a supporter of magic users, he's clever. But he still tells Uther about all sorts of magic stuff, and I'm pretty sure half of what happened to Merlin wouldn't have happened if Gaius wasn't such a blabbermouth.
Donkey Arthur was a gem.
I like all the scenes when Uther looks at Merlin like he can explain why Arthur is acting like an idiot.
The scenes when Merlin is cheeky and having fun and being snarky. Like when that pixie likes Gaius and Merlin is utterly disgusted by it.
I quite liked when Merlin first met Mordred, before the dragon said he'd kill Arthur. The episode when Merlin meets his father was a good one.
All the Gwaine episodes in s3.
Any interactions between Merlin and Lancelot.
Also all of these are just current opinions. They might change later.

Hello @allthefujoshiunite, can I ask what anime that you watched this season? I watch Kaijuu no. 8, thanks to your reviews (and I love that series).....Is it just me, but I kinda ship the mc with his young kouhai who always believe in him.....
My top 3 fav this season are :
- Tadaima, Okaeri (wholesome BL, also one of my comfort read)
- -Black Butler : Public School Arc (yes the ship is problematic but you cannot deny the shipper when you watch it. I'm not shipping SebasCiel but I'm not anti too. Their canon relationship is complicated but great story)
- -Wind Breaker (bucchigiri but way better and loveable mc)
Hope you'll like them.....
Helloooo! My TV is busted as of now (and for some reason I decided to rewatch a couple of House MD episodes for nostalgia and now i’m stuck in a rewatch hell xD) so I took a short break from anime. It’s strange; I never had a TV and was perfectly content watching anime on my laptop, that is until 2 years ago… My dad insisted I got my brother’s old TV bc he wants to watch the news or whatnot when he’s visiting me and now I can’t do without it lol
But anyways, enough about me. Tl;dr is that I still haven’t started Kaijuu but super happy that you’re liking it and my review was what led you to watch it 👀 I started watching Tadaima Okaeri and Wind Breaker as well, definitely see the Bucchigiri similarity you mentioned. There’s also the 3rd season of The Duke of Death and His Maid, it’s still cute.
As for other series I enjoy this season:
The Many Sides of Voice Actor Radio: Two high school classmates are in voice acting/idol business and they have totally different characters. However, they end up having to co-host a radio show and present their persona like they get along really well. LOVE this one. Chill, sweet, interesting, love that both young women have their own aspirations and shortcomings.
Astro Note: A nod to Rumiko Takahashi’s Maison Ikkoku. A recently unemployed chef gets hired to cook for a shared boarding house. Lots of eccentric characters and a fun, upbeat series.
Tumblr media
Bartender: A hotel, soon to be opened, is in need of a bartender. And they do find a bartender that would satisfy the extremely picky owner but he refuses to work there, claiming he’s ‘afraid of heights’. This is one of those edutainment series where you follow a story and learn about cocktails in the mean time. Might not be appealing to a lot but it’s totally my jam! I don’t drink often but love me a good cocktail ~
Where Does the Doomsday Train Go?: Most people are turning into animals that can still communicaate using language and Shizuru is determined to find her lost best friend. Thus, four young girls embark on a train that’ll take them to Harajuku. This one is weird as hell and that’s a plus in my book! The main characters’ dynamic gets stale at times, but the absurdity keeps me hooked. It’s extremely hard to put into words so you have to check the first episode to see if it works for you. XD
Other series that I watch for now, feel ‘eh’ and might drop depending on how they go: Vampire Dormitory, A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics, Oblivion Battery, An Archdemon's Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride, A Condition Called Love.
These are the stuff that I watched at least 2-3 episodes from and will continue after I finish rewatching House and get my TV repaired xD The season is packed as always! Thanks a lot for sending the ask ~

Random ask, do you love satosugu because somehow their dynamic remind you of vashwood and because both ships end up tragically? Because I just read somewhere that said Geto remind them of Wolfwood...(?)
P.s
So, I read trigun manga after finishing trigun 2023 and trigun 1998. And I got totally different vibes from Vash 2023 and 1998 (my moots said the 2023 version is such a 'babygirl' and 1998 is such a 'daddy'). Do you agree? Also which version of the anime that you love more, 1998 or 2023?
"do you love satosugu because somehow their dynamic remind you of vashwood and because both ships end up tragically?"
No. None of that. When I fell for stsg, I didn't have vashwood on my mind. Just like I didn't have eruri on my mind when I fell for vashwood. They share the tragic trait but, other aspects are different.
What caught my attention was Gojo's narrow view of Geto. He put him on the pedestal, called him the strongest openly, never questioned him, discussed everything with him, and was open to him. This is what absolutely devastated me about this ship. On the other hand, you have Geto patiently waiting for Gojo to put his uncut character together, to become the polished diamond, bonding with him over the tiniest details, and caring for him when nobody else cared because "he's the strongest."
When people say that Gojo is head over hills with Geto, I can see it. Their dynamics were always based on a strong trust and shared footing. Something you don't see that often.
And honestly, I didn't know anything about jjk when I started it watching. No spoilers. So, when Geto appeared with stitches, I thought it was just Geto but different. It wasn't that tragic to me.
So, no, I ship stsg because I like what they have and I ship vashwood because of their own dynamics, not just because they end up tragic. I would love them even if they didn't end up tragic. LIKE WHAT'S THAT QUESTION, ANON?
"Because I just read somewhere that said Geto remind them of Wolfwood...(?)"
Eh? Really? That's an interesting take, i guess? But I as someone who loves Wolfwood dearly and is my favorite Trigun character, I can't agree.
Nick and Geto have different backgrounds. They became traitors for different reasons. While Nick tried escaping hell, Geto simply pulled himself deeper. Nick, in later chapters, couldn't even shoot at the villains set by EOM. On the other hand, Geto never regretted a thing he'd done. Chapel was going crazy because Nick refused to kill anyone. I'm not saying Geto is a cold-hearted bastard, far from it, but this is not really clicking. Nick killed because he believed he had to, while Geto killed because he believed it was right.
It's really different, Anon. I see why it could be confusing, they both balance. I could talk about it for hours and show you in detail, but this is it for now.
The problem with the three Trigun bodies is that all versions are different. The original is always the MANGA. you should always get back to the root, though Nightow approved of both anime versions. But he also said that the 98 version is overdoing Vash's character. He's NOT such a big womanizer. You barely see him like that in the manga. And 2023 version is done differently. It has a whole new approach to the story, so it's like mixing three kinds of apples.
I once said that 2023 vashwood are just the broth of the real manga vashwood. The main evidence is in the guns they use. I made a post (x). They're still in their naive era.
I wouldn't as a serious fan talk about the storytelling this way. That 2023 version is babygirl, like what does that even mean, dude? Is this how we now introduce our favorite shows? Just a lanky Vash being cute trying to save humankind? Talk seriously at least for a damn second.
And of course, my favorite is the manga. The anime is very okay, both versions have their own thing, so it's hard to pick, as they're not a copy of each other.
But Trimax Wolfwood will forever be my Holy Grail. HE'S ON THE TOP and Vash, man... those two in the manga are pure perfection. I can't even... *shakes head in disbelief*

I found this interesting books ask :
https://www.tumblr.com/dnana-2809-blog/749706502296813568/bookish-asks?source=share
Do you mind if I ask, no. 13, 14, 15, 18, and 50? Thanks...😁
thank you! i love talking about books :)
13. name a book with a really bad movie/tv adaption.
i just finished another book by celeste ng so the one that springs to mind right away is little fires everywhere. imo ng's biggest strength is that she writes about identity politics in a very accessible but nuanced way and the show adaptation just took all that nuance and threw it out of the window. my personal little nitpick is that they turned the mc who is aroace-coded in the book into a bisexual. yes, one could argue that her ruminating on how she can't help her daughter deal with romantic heartbreak bc she has never been in love herself is just a throwaway line but it's one of those lines that completely reframes the character and makes everything we learned about her make more sense in hindsight - that is, if you're open to seeing someone as aroace. if not, as a reader, you will assume she has probably had relationships which she just never mentions bc they're not relevant to the story (see: dumbledore rollerblading in every scene). as a showrunner, you will fill in those alleged gaps in her romantic and sexual life with bisexual drama which will give you more content for the show's runtime, if nothing else. so that is an interesting example of aroace erasure - it's not intentional but the fact that a person's deliberate lack of love life is something they, consciously or not, decided just not to represent speaks to a larger problem with aroace rep. if you straightwash a queercoded character people will likely notice. if you allo-wash an aroace-coded character no one will even blink.
14. name a book where the movie/tv adaption actually was better than the original.
i can't think of one that is better than the original off the top of my head but there are some adaptations i'm attached to much more than i like their source materials. the lord of the rings movies, for example. a re-read of the series i did a few years ago proved to be a slog but the movies will forever remain a special quality time i can share with my dad. the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy is another example. i know for a fact that the fans of the book don't like the adaptation but i'm biased bc it's one of my comfort movies and i don't get why the book is supposed to be better, despite having read it two times🤷‍♀️
15. what book changed your life?
all for the game changed my life bc by reading it and becoming part of the fandom i have discovered the aroace spectrum and realized i'm on it (on the far end of it, in fact lol). i'm pretty certain the same couldn't have happened via just learning about asexuality from some educational materials bc neil's headspace and the subsequent frustration with how he got twisted in fanon were essential for my aroace awakening🖤🩶🤍💜💚
18. which character from a book is the most like you?
lol idk. i think if i encountered a character who is a lot like me it would make me so uncomfortable i'd erase this from my memory immediately. so instead of an answer please kindly accept this meme i made for my friends and draw your own conclusions😅
Tumblr media
50. why do you love to read?
i read for escapism. that's why entertainment and immersion are the main two factors that make or break a book for me. granted, i have weird tastes and often find entertaining the things other readers find boring and vice versa. and i like when fiction is so immersive i can feel my soul leave my body and get transported to a different world, a different life. bc of this one might think i yearn for adventure but that's not true - i love my boring life and i love the illusion of control one has as a reader compared to the lack of control one often experiences irl: if the adventure is not to my liking i can simply close the book.

Hello, can I ask from this ask game :
https://www.tumblr.com/threecheersforinking/677824836625694720/anime-ask-game?source=share
You can pick for either of these series : the lymond chronicles, all for the game, a song of ice and fire, harry potter, captive prince?
Thanks 🌻
thanks for the ask!
⚔️the lymond chronicles⚔️
favorite character: phelim o'liamroe, prince of barrow and lord of the slieve bloom...😐🤥 jk it's lymond - the man, the myth, the lemon. i mean if lymond isn't your fave character in the lymond chronicles are you even reading them right?
character i think is underrated: hmmm margaret lennox? i don't see people talk about her too often. justice for the evil ex!
character i think is overrated: philippa. don't even get me started🙄
favorite ship/pairing: while reading i did ship lymond with each and every one of his boytoys which was very entertaining but i wouldn't actually like any of these relationships to be endgame. i firmly believe lymond is bisexual, aromantic and non-monogamous, therefore the only person i would want him to "end up with" is marthe - not as a slash ship but as in lymond and marthe, both in drag, ride into the sunset together to cause chaos and mayhem✨
favorite arc/episode/scene: the hume castle shebacle from book one is my platonic ideal of a fictional experience. just thinking about don luis fernando de cordoba y avila with his "long, exquisite legs" and his perfecto scottish is enough to raise my mood for the rest of the day😁
something i love about this series: tbh the thing i love the most is lymond to the point that i'm afraid to try dunnett's other books bc there will be no lymond in them. however, i will still read them sooner or later bc my second favorite thing about the lymond chronicles is dunnett's witty but sophisticated prose which i'm sure i will find in abundance in her other works
🥍all for the game🥍
favorite character: i love both of my boys equally but i will admit i voted for andrew minyard in that best queer character poll bracket🙈
character i think is underrated: actually i don't think there is one. some of the aftg characters are controversial but i think everyone gets their fair share of love and attention🤷‍♀️
character i think is overrated: in the og trilogy it's nicky and in tsc it's sort of everyone?😅 lol i just don't think they're that interesting but i'm glad other people are having fun with them
favorite ship/pairing: andreil, obviously.
favorite arc/episode/scene: aftg is full of amazing scenes, both quiet and spectacular, but if i have to pick just one i'm gonna go with the first riko roast bc fun fact: i actually abandoned tfc halfway through the first time i tried to read it bc i just didn't know what to do with it - but then i decided to give it a second chance and the riko roast was the scene where i finally comprehended and internalized the chaotic but rebellious vibe of aftg. that's why i never dnf books - you never know which weird selfpub sports anime might become your all time favorite story!
something i love about this series: the way it depicts the relations between the society and people who are treated like outsiders due to their trauma - it always sides with the latter! exemplified by how the team needs andrew and so they have to put up with his little quirks and find ways of communication - instead of him making himself act more normal and agreeable in order to fit in. which i think is pretty much the status quo of writing about trauma so aftg feels very radical in that sense
👑captive prince👑
favorite character: it's laurent, lymond's baby cousin😅
character i think is underrated: aimeric? tbh i haven't read anything capri related in a while, maybe he's the newest fandom fave by now
character i think is overrated: never have i ever understood why everyone insists on resurrecting auguste. he dead! and not that interesting in any case😒
favorite ship/pairing: damen/laurent, since their love is the whole point of the series, but i will say for me it's more like. i'm obsessed with laurent and so i like that damen gets obsessed with him too and falls in love with him bc that's what laurent deserves. however i do not actually like damen nor do i like the final jump from enemies to lovers in the second half of book 3 soooo yeah. many caveats🤷‍♀️
favorite arc/episode/scene: laurent's duel with govart. listen, i'm a simple girl, i love me some competence porn and power fantasies with swords. also! laurent calling out aimeric for all the bad things he secretly believes about himself which leads to aimeric's suicide. that's some fucked up shit, love it👀
something i love about this series: the witty, backhanded, at times scathing exchanges which i started calling pacatesque dialogue upon encountering it in other books (of primarily australian sff authors who are personally acquainted with pacat, it's a whole thing). i know other booklr girlies like to talk about themes and motifs and whatnot but for me all of that is vastly inferior to lines like "tell my uncle boykiller etc etc". i think i just have lots of bottled up bitchiness inside me and like to live vicariously through characters who can vocalize it in such a brutal yet elegant fashion
🐉a song of ice and fire🐉
favorite character: tyrion lannister. lol at this point you can see a pattern: if he's shrewd, traumatized and blonde you can safely bet he's on my blorbo shelf😅
character i think is underrated: i'm gonna go with doran martell. he represents one of my favorite character archetypes - someone who is seen as a simpleton and a pushover but has actually been scheming and masterminding stuff all along. "oberyn was ever the viper. i was the grass. who fears to walk upon the grass? but it is the grass that hides the viper" - is actually one of my favorite quotes from the series. comparing book doran to show doran one can see how he's sort of emblematic for how the show butchered the dorne plotline😒
character i think is overrated: i did like sansa's journey in the books but they end just on the cusp of her turning from a pawn into one of the most capable and dangerous players on the board - something she however hasn't become, not yet. so i think the hype she gets in the fandom, largely based on the show which skipped a lot of steps in her character arc and made her a very basic girlboss, is somewhat undeserved🤷‍♀️
favorite ship/pairing: i definitely feel a certain kind of way about jaime & brienne but idk if i ship them in the proper sense of the word. their developing relationship is probably the most compelling in the series and some of its aspects are very personal for me as a weird looking ace girl, among other things, so i don't think i want them to become a *couple*. but i do want them to become *something*. if they survive, that is😬
favorite arc/episode/scene: tyrion's trial is one of the most excruciating and heart-wrenching yet dramatic scenes i've ever experienced. i have to admit i remember it better from the show bc that was just Peak Television and peter dinklage's acting?? unparalleled. a scene so epic it made me cry every time i watched it. just thinking about it gives me chills🫨
something i love about this series: i've spent an ungodly amount of time thinking about what makes asoiaf superior to other fantasy series and the character work and complex morality are certainly up there but the one thing that speaks to me personally and which i struggle to find elsewhere is something i call the slytherclaw ethos. normally the characters of western sff are rewarded by the narrative for being brave, kind, other boring gryffinpuff things, regardless of whether they could've *realistically* prevailed thanks to those qualities alone. in the world of asoiaf one is instead rewarded for cunning and ambition - or at the very least it's clear a character will not get anywhere without learning how to play the game of thrones. this difference is at the core of the subversiveness asoiaf gets both praised and criticized for and, as someone who relates to characters who rely on their brain more than their heart and other muscles and would like to see them elevated above generic fantasy protags, i find this approach to storytelling in general and to sff specifically very appealing

assuming you've read tsc, what are ur thoughts?
mixed feelings, anon!
on the one hand, tsc is just another confirmation that nora is a talented writer - i think the dialogue especially is where she really excels. the reading experience was overall very fun, i did enjoy seeing my faves again. neil is an icon, obviously. the culture clash between jean and the trojans was Comedy Gold. and it was interesting to see an exploration of a different trauma response than we've seen in aftg in jean.
on the other hand, i feel like jean's story in tsc mirrors neil's story in aftg - a troubled youth joins an exy team where he will make new friends and get better mentally - but is like. a simplified and less compelling version of that. it's good that jean is his own character, i don't need him to be a copy of neil, but i gotta say - neil's cameo appearances totally stole the show and made me wonder why i wasn't reading a book about him instead. however, it's all the other characters who were the real problem - it felt like i'm reading a version of aftg where a less fun iteration of neil joins an exy team consisting just of the upperclassmen and nicky hemmick which uhhh,, if you've read some of my old posts you know how i feel about him so there was no chance in hell i'd like cat alvarez and her whole shtick. the foxes felt good for the soul bc there was a balance between the upperclassmen's and the monsters' type of care for neil - and crucially neil chose the latter group to be his close circle, among other things, bc he felt they could understand him better. by constrast, jean is alone with the trojans who don't give any credibility to his claims that they just can't understand what he went through, don't respect his right to keep his trauma private and just keep trying to force his "recovery". aftg felt like a bunch of freaks with various but equally fascinating issues put in close quarters and you watch them sometimes butt heads, sometimes uplift each other in the most unexpected ways. tsc however felt like a bunch of normies bullying a traumatized kid - so basically one of those obnoxious fics where the upperclassmen are all in neil and andrew's business.
jean's bisexuality was a double-edged sword too: on the one hand, i felt very smug reading about how his attraction works bc 1) it's so obviously different from neil and 2) wow turns out years of psychological, physical and sexual abuse do not in fact take away your sexuality! le gasp! surprised fucking pikachu!! crazy how through all of this jean is still bi. the human spirit is unbreakable. (unless your mom hits you for kissing a girl, then it's breakable). so i did feel vindicated but at the same time this was not relatable to the point that i can't see myself getting invested in jean and jeremy's developing relationship. nothing is more of a turn off for me in fictional romances than when both of them are immediately attracted to each other and let the reader know in no uncertain terms. where are the mind games? where are the intricate rituals? it feels like a lazy shortcut. but good for them, i guess?
sooo idk. i didn't hate tsc by any means but i'm sad i didn't enjoy it as much as my mutuals😭

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks...
Hi! Sorry this is so late. To answer your question, I'd say my top ten favourite characters are:
Zuko from Atla because him crying in the rain, screaming at the lightning hit me somewhere in my soul. His hug with uncle Iroh after he's so ashamed and so heartbroken that he hurt his uncle. And the whole 'my father says I was lucky to be born'. It is his redemption arc, but that seems like an understatement.
Arthur from Merlin, it's difficult to know him properly because it's all Merlin's point of view anyway, but it's super interesting how he changed his views even though all his life he was told something different. And obviously it didn't work out, because he was a person with a lot of power but he was a puppet.
Katara from Atla, she's lovely and reminds me of my best friend, I love that she's a motherly figure and it doesn't diminish anyone's respect for her, she doesn't change herself to fit anyones standards, and her femininity is her strength. She doesn't have to act masculine to get her point across.
Pat from BBC Ghosts, his lack of self esteem, but how he's definitely always himself and unafraid because he's obviously comfortable with the others and appreciates their differences.
Spiderman/Peter Parker, his whole thing is like compassion and self sacrifice and its a little heartbreaking but so so compelling. He's been through loads of grief but he doesn't let it change him even though it's crushing and he has to deal with it alone.
Alex rider, this was when I was fifteen and I couldn't let it go because I binge read the books and the way he goes into a depression with all he's seen but still has to be teenager. I think my angsty emo self related to him delusionally in that he's a crazy talented teenage spy and I was at school not doing my exams bc of the pandemic
Hiccup from the movies books and series, again the way he changed his views even though he was surrounded by people who said otherwise in an oppressive way. Snotlout from the series, he's character growth and development was very satisfying and his flaws were likeable
Merlin from Merlin, he's a very complex character and it's always fun to analyse him. He had a devolution of character,
Bandit from Bluey because he commits to the bit without embarrassment or hesitation and he enjoys himself, I appreciate it
There are so many others, and I don't really have a specific order for these. It's super hard to pick favourite characters, because a lot of the time it's usually just one that I can identify with or learn from or analyse. A lot of characters are compelling. And honestly, some of these characters come in pairs like hiccup and Astrid, and Arthur and Merlin, and Katara and toph and sokka, Zuko and iroh, they balance each other out, not in a shipping sense. They are their own characters with their own personalities, but their some parts of the personalities are linked to their relationships with other characters.

I think it's important to acknowledge that choso was not only a curse or a human, he was both. he could never reject one or the other cause he loved yuuji as much as he loved his other death painting siblings who were seen more as curses rather human. however, being a curse does not mean you're incapable of love and rika, jogo, hanami and dagon as well as eso and kechizu were a proof of that. they couldn't be accepted by humans but that didn't stop them from loving their comrades and brothers. "love is the most twisted curses of them all" cause just like curses, love is not something people will always accept. one person's love is another person's curse, as long as they refuse to receive, accept or show that love. choso couldn't truly show yuuji his love by teaching him new things, so in the end he showed it in the only way he knew how to...
I'm sorry for being useless during our training… I'm the type who does it on instinct…
human act on their reason and beliefs, curses act on their instincts, choso acted on both. he did show love by trying to teach his younger brother new things and then by protecting him in the end but also by being there for him at yuuji's lowest. choso didn't die as a curse or a human, he died as a big brother choso.
yuuji says goodbye to choso as he finally says, "thank you, aniki..."

What do you think are Sukuna and Yuuji’s greatest personality strengths and weaknesses? Why? What do you love about their dynamic?
oh I love questions like that!!
for sukuna, I wanted to say his intelligence and creativity but to be honest I think it's his curiosity and inquisitiveness. Intelligence and creativity are like muscles. you develop them the more you observe, learn, practice and experience and one of sukuna's defining traits is that he's incredibly observant. his curiosity in a way contradicts his "I don't give a fuck about anything" attitude but then we have witnessed time and time again how he finds other sorcerous intriguing or in sukuna's words "fascinating". he even admits later to kashimo that he finds people tasty interesting
sukuna's curiosity allows him to learn new things and lets him acquire more knowledge (hence why he's so adaptable and strategic in combat), probably as a way to keep himself entertained, after all he's also a super bored individual. However, one would think that for someone with such strong sense of curiosity and inquisitiveness that naturally leads him into exploring and learning, he would be much more prone to growing and evolving as a person... well not in sukuna's case nuh uh. cause this guys biggest problem obstacle is him himself.
sukuna claims he doesn't need anyone and thinking his way of living is perfectly fine and yet he showed doubts when that one "annoying brat" who he can't seem to ged rid off (by literally and metaphorically cutting them off) the way he did everyone else, made him reflect on himself for the first time in millennium. sukuna is a great and cunning observant... of everyone but himself. I think his greatest personality weakness is his absolute lack of self awareness, which is kinda funny considering that he's also a character with the most overwhelming sense of self. it’s like he knows damn well who is and doesn’t need external validation but then because he never self reflects he can’t really grow and evolve as a person… and if it wasn't for sukuna and yuuji's forced coexistence, sukuna would have most likely still kept going about his life the way he always did without trying to understand his own thoughts, feelings, values, beliefs, and actions. the reason he never questioned his own way of being is cause others are just a way for him to pass time rather than an opportunity to reflect upon himself and learn something about his own inner workings…
and then we have yuuji who I would say is on the same spectrum just on the opposite end. yuuji doesn't really reflect on himself or question the world he lives in but that wasn't always the case. in the first ten chapter we actually get to witness his internal monologue about death and his place in all of this but after his first encounter with a certain death, everything changes. yuuji stopped reflecting on himself and instead started repressing his emotions. someone actually made a great meta about this, he actively avoids thinking about the whole situation, which brings me to my point. I think yuuji's greatest personality weakness is actually his impulsiveness. he tends to make decisions without thinking about the consequences first. yuuji, like most of teenagers tbh, doesn't want to think too hard about the world he lives in so long as he has something to do but I believe this might also be related to the perception he has of himself as "the dumb one". “Im an idiot so there’s no point in me thinking about these things right?” you can even see that sort of attitude when megumi admits why he saved yuuji that day
you’re so smart fushiguro. thinking about all sorts of stuff, unlike me.
oh yuuji.. yuuji.. :/. but in some ways yuuji's impulsiveness can also work in his favour. his "do it now, think later" attitude doesn't allow him much room to overthink, so once he commits to a task he doesn't back down until he achieve his goal. that's why, I believe his greatest strength are his determination and strong will, something even sukuna couldn't break.
sukuna and yuuji’s strength and weakness go hand in hand and complement one another. sukuna's habitual curiosity reflects yuuji's obliviousness to the world around him, whilst yuuji's determination (but also just sheer existence) caused sukuna to have doubts about his way of living. they're complete polar opposite and yet in some ways they're more alike than they think. neither of them is a big fan of self reflection. they're both stubborn af. physical pain is just an after thought to them, they'll keep going even if they loose half of their limbs. "violence is the solution". they're both freaks who don't mind eating human flesh and one of them actually enjoys it. and lastly, they're both just really miserable. sukuna's selfishness only made him hollow inside and yuuji's selflessness only brought him more suffering and pain. they also think that the solution to their problems is to kill the other one (which is kinda funny now that I think about it lol tho in yuuji's case this is kinda true.. but also not really) and yet they’ve been essential to each other’s growth. they’re both really fucked up individuals who hate each other’s guts and make each other’s lives a living hell but at the same time they also know and understand the other one’s soul like no one else… what’s not to love?
sukuna and yuuji’s dynamic is actually the reason why I fell in love w jjk in the first place. their interactions are always fun and entertaining and they always leave with an even bigger brainrot but at this point I think it’s safe to say that these two consumed my mind and heart and maybe even soul completely. I just can’t get enough of them.
