This heart is just beating peacefully on its own outside the body, prior to a transplantation surgery! . That's a classic representation of cardiac automaticity, which is the property of a specialized cardiac cells called pacemakers to generate spontaneous electrical impulse. . The heart has its own pacemaker independent of the brain. As long as it has oxygen, it continues to beat. The heart could actually be removed from the body, placed in saline solution, given oxygen, and still continue to beat. This is why although the brain is dead, the heart continues to beat. . Cells capable of generating an impulse are in the sinus node and AV node, which fire at regular intervals and leads to the beat. #medicine #medschool #doctor #futuredoctor #doctormotivation #medicalmindset #medicalschool #mcat #studentdoctor #surgeon #surgery #medical #plasticsurgeon #futurenurse #nursing #ilovemedicine #plasticsurgery #neurosurgery #Cardiology #anatomy #humanheart #hearttransplant #cardiacsurgeon #heartsurgeon #cardiologist #cardiacsurgery #heartsurgery https://www.instagram.com/p/Bm6V0sTlbQN/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=tqx3yqdw0anc

What Are Gallstones? They aren’t really stones. They're pieces of solid material that form in the gallbladder, a small organ located under the liver. You might not even know you have them until they block a bile duct, causing paim that you need to get treated right away. there are two main type of gallstones: Cholesterol stones. These are usually yellow-green in color. They're the most common kind, accounting for 80% of gallstones. Pigment stones. These stones are smaller and darker. They're made up of bilirubin, which comes from bile, a fluid your liver makes and your gallbladder stores. There may be several reasons, including: Your genes Your weight Problems with your gallbladder Diet Bile can be part of the problem. Your body needs bile, but if it has too much cholesterol in it, that makes gallstones more likely. It can also happen if your gallbladder can’t empty properly. Pigment stones are more common in people with certain medical conditions, such as cirrhosis (a liver disease) or blood diseases such as sickle cell anemia. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bl-hiG9lclv/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1nw6evu2zpa3u

A hepactectomy is the surgical removal of the liver. Hepatectomies are performed to surgically remove tumors from the liver. Most liver cancers start in liver cells called "hepatocytes." The resulting cancer is called hepatocellular carcinoma or malignant hepatoma. The type of cancer that can be removed by hepatectomy is called a localized resectable (removable) liver cancer. It is diagnosed as such when there is no evidence that it has spread to the nearby lymph nodes or to any other parts of the body. Laboratory tests also show that the liver is working well. As part of a multidisciplinary approach, the procedure can offer a chance of long-term remission to patients otherwise guaranteed of having a poor outcome. #surgery #medicalschool #nurse #medical #surgeon #doctor #medicine #clinical #health #healthcare #dentist #university #Arab #german #nice #Canada #health #instagram #students #student #nice#photoshoot #photography #love #UK #America #girls #boys #USA #russia #fashions https://www.instagram.com/p/Bl-KtjvlTCL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xuze396sedtu

Regrann from @medical.doctors - The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs present in left and right sides of the body in vertebrates. They are located at the back of the abdominal cavity. In adults they are about 11 centimetres (4.3 in) in length. They receive blood from the paired renal arteries; blood exits into the paired renal veins. Each kidney is attached to a ureter, a tube that carries excreted urine to the bladder. The nephron is the structural and functional unit of the kidney. Each adult kidney contains around one million nephrons. The nephron utilizes four processes to alter the blood plasma which flows to it: filtration, reabsorption, secretion, and excretion. The kidney participates in the control of the volume of various body fluid compartments, fluid osmolality, acid-base balance, various electrolyte concentrations, and removal of toxins. Filtration occurs in the glomerulus: one-fifth of the blood volume that enters the kidneys is filtered. Examples of substances reabsorbed are solute-free water, sodium, bicarbonate, glucose, and amino acids. Examples of substances secreted are hydrogen, ammonium, potassium and uric acid. The kidneys also carry out functions independent of the nephron. For example, they convert a precursor of vitamin D to its active form, calcitriol; and synthesize the hormones erythropoietin and renin. #doctor #medicine #medical #health #medschool #medstudent #healthcare #family #friends #motivation #article #nurse #lifestyle #futuredoctor #surgery #surgeon #pharmacist #scientist #love #treatment #doctors

The lightning tree!! This guy got struck by a lightning and saved by his girlfriend who performed a life-saving CPR on him weeks after learning it!!! 18-year-old Isaiah Cormier and his girlfriend Juliet Moore (@j_moo_re) were camping and on the second night of a two-day camping trip on Saturday, they returned to their campsite, knowing rain was expected in the area. They started hearing a bit of thunder. As Cormier finished stashing away some of their camping items in Moore's car in preparation for the storm, lightning struck nearby and a clap of thunder boomed. Seconds later, another strike sounded even closer, prompting Moore to go in the tent. Moments later, a flash of light flooded the campsite. She called out to her boyfriend and stuck her head out of the tent. She saw Cormier lying face down on the ground. She rolled him over and clearly noticed something was wrong. She checked for the heartbeat, checked for breathing, didn’t see either and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with chest compressions and artificial mouth-to-mouth ventilation. He gasped and woke up… but stopped breathing again. Proper CPR technique was fresh in Moore's mind, as she had taken a class on the lifesaving method just a month earlier. After Moore provided rescue breaths for the second time, Cormier's chest began rising and falling as his lungs filled with air, but only briefly. A man camping nearby heard her screaming for help and came to assist and they loaded Cormier into Moore's car. She was able to find enough cellphone signal despite being in the mountains to dial 911, and by happenstance an ambulance was in the area because a nearby caller that had requested medical assistance ended up not needing to be transported. She drove to meet the ambulance and transferred her boyfriend into the care of paramedics. He woke up in the ambulance shortly after. The lightning entered through Cormier’s neck and out his right foot. They said they hope their story will inspire others to take a CPR class, as it can unexpectedly make the difference between life and death. The image shows a Lichtenberg figure, specific to individuals struck by lightenin #surgery #medicalschool

Above-the-knee leg amputation on a 57-year-old patient who had a 6 years history of diabetes which was complicated with atherosclerosis of the lower limb and eventually lead to an irreversible gangrene. The leading indication for limb amputation is ischemic disease such as a peripheral vascular disease or PVD for short (a severe disease of the circulation such as an atherosclerotic process), primarily in elderly persons with diabetes mellitus, who often experience peripheral neuropathy that progresses to trophic ulcers and subsequent gangrene and osteomyelitis. Limb removal for PVD is performed for uncontrollable soft-tissue or bone infection, nonreconstructable disease with persistent tissue loss, or unrelenting rest pain due to muscle ischemia. Foot or leg ulcers may develop due to diabetes and not heal. They may become infected, and the infection may spread to the bone and become severe enough to be life threatening. The surgical decision in that case is an above-knee amputation, which is performed when lower-level surgery is prohibited in order to remove the diseased tissue and prevent further spread of infection. Although a diseased limb can be removed quite readily, resolving the problem of the extremity, the care does not end there. The surgery must be performed well to ensure that the patient is able to wear a prosthesis comfortably #surgery #medicalschool #nurse #medical #surgeon #doctor #medicine #clinical #health #healthcare #dentist #university #Arab #german #nice #Canada #health #instagram #students #student #nice#photoshoot #photography #love #UK #America #girls #boys #USA #russia #fashions

This abnormal lateral curvature of the spine is a condition called Scoliosis. In all cases, prior corrective surgery, the degree of the spinal deformity is measured by Cobb angle, with scoliosis defined as a lateral spinal curvature with a Cobb angle of 10° or more. Reasons for scoliosis are broad, including congenital (from birth), neuromuscular scoliosis seen in spina bifida and patients with cerebral palsy, degenerative scoliosis due to a trauma, major previous back surgery, or osteoporosis, and idiopathic scoliosis with no apparent reason. The upcoming post will show an intra-operative view and the post-operative result! Thyroid cysts represent enlarged fluid-filled regions of the thyroid that may be small (less than 1 cm) or quite large and sometimes arise very suddenly. A cyst, by definition, contains fluid. Thyroid nodules may be entirely cystic, in which case there are no solid components detectable within the fluid. Alternatively, the nodule may be complex, and contain both fluid and solid components. Cystic nodules may expand and enlarge suddenly sometimes due to hemorrhage or bleeding within a smaller pre-existing nodule. In some cases, rapidly enlarging cysts may produce symptoms in the neck, including pain, trouble swallowing, and rarely, compression of vocal cords leading to a change in voice quality. Cysts that are entirely fluid filled have a much lower risk of harboring a small thyroid cancer compared to cysts that have solid components. Diagnosis of a cystic thyroid lesion may be made at the time of ultrasound, or following a thyroid aspiration biopsy, when fluid is obtained from the thyroid lesion. Complete spontaneous resolution of a thyroid cyst may occur, but is uncommon (~ 15 % of cases). Most large cysts or complex cysts should be aspirated with a fine needle to rule out the possibility of malignancy. Ultrasound-guided biopsies of complex cystic nodules may be particularly useful for ensuring that the biopsy material contains thyroid cells, and not just cystic fluid. For an overview of the diagnosis and management of cystic thyroid disease, see Recommendations for management of cystic thyroid disease Surgery 1999 Dec;126(6):1167-71; For evaluation of a partly cystic nodule, the risk of cancer seems proportionate to the degree to which the nodule also contains solid components. In one study, if a partly cystic nodule was comprised of at least 50% solid tissue, the risk of malignancy approached 20%. On the other hand, largely cystic nodules with smaller solid components have a much lower risk of thyroid cancer, perhaps 5% #mednews #surgery #medicalschool #scrubs #medicine #medstudent #anatomy #surgeon #medstudentlife #medicine #clinical#health #healthcare #dentist #nurse #nursery #nursingschool #patients #thebestdoctor #medblog #photography #instagram#suc
