Turn that bad day into a positive one...?
No matter where you work, you, like everyone else, can be subject to a bad day. However, having a bad day does not necessarily mean you have to have a bad day at work. Although it may sometimes be difficult, it is important to keep your spirits lifted at work because not only will your work improve, but your working relationships will be better, and you will find yourself experiencing more and more success in the workplace. A bad day may be out of your control, but how you respond to it is not.

Tips to Brighten You Mood At Work:
TAKE A LITTLE TIME IN THE MORNING –
A positive attitude is a habit that can be built over time. For most people, having a positive attitude at work is going to require some work. Take time each morning and set your goals for the day. Give yourself a minute of rest before you start your workday. Take a moment and find/listen/watch something that will put a smile on your face. It makes it easier to carry a positive mood throughout your workday when you start your day with a little bit of positivity.
WORKPLACE HURDLES -
It’s highly unlikely that stress is somehow magically going to disappear from the workplace; therefore, it is critical to maintain a positive attitude. Obstacles do not have to be something negative. Try viewing obstacles/stress has a challenge instead of a problem. One thing you can try is making a list of the things/problems/people that might put you in a bad mood at work. Simply by identifying the things that put you in a negative state of mind, you can begin to think of strategies for overcoming these obstacles in a positive manner.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS –
The importance of managing your expectations and the expectations of your coworkers cannot be overstated. The more you expect yourself to have a good day, the more you are going to be willing to handle stress and obstacles in an effective manner. Additionally, moods can certainly be contagious in the workplace. You should make an effort to remain positive if you find a coworker having a bad day and/or being negative. Furthermore, managing expectations is a tool you can use to help mitigate stress. If you know what to expect from your work (boss, coworkers, assignments, etc.), and they know what to expect from you, the chance of stressful situations arising is likely to decrease.
BREAK THE CYCLE –
One of the biggest “mood-killers” at work is monotony. Most jobs require the employee to carry out the same series of tasks day after day, year after year. Although this predictability can be comforting and provide a sense of security, it can also lead to frustration, boredom, and flat-out negativity. One way to break up the monotony, and brighten your mood, is to change up your routine throughout the workday. Take your break at a different time. Go for a short walk outside if the weather is nice. Have lunch with a co-worker you don’t know well. Challenging yourself to find ways to continually keep yourself interested in your work is a surefire way to help increase your positivity.
Remember, on cloudy days, You’ve Got Sunshine.

Easy and Delicious Lunches to Take With You to Work
Having a demanding job can sometimes make life a little bit tougher. One prime example of this is how a busy work-life can negatively impact your diet. Often times, when you’re on the go, you may forget about packing a lunch and are forced to find something fast to squeeze in during your lunch break. Eating fast food like McDonald’s or Wendy’s frequently can increase your cholesterol, blood pressure and can even increase your odds of having heart disease or diabetes. To combat the rise of American obesity, try meal prepping your lunches to take with you to work! This way you can ensure that you’re putting the best ingredients into your meals, resulting in an overall happier and healthier you!
Here are some examples of easy, delicious and healthy lunches to bring with you to work!
Source: Daily Mail UK
Meal prep = Veggie + Protein + Starch
The basic guide to building a great lunch is to incorporate veggies, protein, and starches. The key to doing this in a successful way is to balance each one, and adding the best of each ingredient. This allows having a variety for many different meals! The graphic below explains how to get the best out of this food formula.
OTHER GREAT OPTIONS FOR LUNCH ARE:
TURKEY TACO SALAD
This is a fun meal for Taco Tuesday (or for any day of the week, too!) that will leave your taste buds and stomach happy. One of the best things about this recipe is that it uses ground turkey, which has risen in popularity because it’s healthier in comparison to beef. You can make dinner with ground turkey and just set aside however much you want for your lunch the next day! Then, add the taco seasoning and you’re good to go!
The full recipe can be found here:Turkey Taco Salad Meal Prep Recipe
DELI SNACK BOX
For days when you’re feeling extra lazy and don’t have your lunch ready to go, try making a deli snack box for your lunch! It has all the great qualities of the best snacks, while still being filling. Plus, it comes in at only 382 calories per serving!
The key to this recipe is having enough turkey to combat your hunger. By adding hard boiled eggs, cherry tomatoes and raw almonds, you’re also hitting almost every major food group! Find the recipe using the link below!
Deli Snack Box
HONEY SRIRACHA MEATBALL BOWL
This recipe will definitely spice up your usual lunch routine! I love this recipe for many different reasons. First of all, who doesn’t love a good meatball!? Also, this recipe calls for ground turkey, so with one purchase of ground turkey, you can make both this recipe and the turkey taco salad! This recipe rings in at only 295 calories per serving, and for a meal as delicious and exciting as this, it’s a win-win! This recipe is by Eat Yourself Skinny and can be found here. Honey Sriracha Glazed Meatballs
TURKEY SPINACH PINWHEEL
The last of my favorite lunches is the turkey spinach pinwheel. This recipe is great because it takes a fun twist on a typical turkey sandwich. Making these pinwheels is fun and they taste great, too! The key to this lunch is to include lots of fruits and vegetables to accompany the pinwheels. You can choose whichever fruits and veggies you like!

How to Get Ready for Work in Under 30 Minutes!

1. SKIP THE SHOWER- DRY SHAMPOO IS YOUR BEST FRIEND
Waking up extra early to take a shower is unappealing to many people. This becomes even more of a hassle when you have long hair that needs to be dried and styled. One of the best tricks to get away with skipping that morning shower is to use dry shampoo! For the days that you just don’t feel like shampooing and conditioning your hair, grab a bottle of dry shampoo (my favorites are Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo and Amika Perf Up Dry Shampoo) and your hair will be revitalized in just seconds. Also, it has been proven that actually not shampooing your hair every day actually makes it healthier!
2. BRIGHTENING EYELINER
This may be unfamiliar to numerous people, but one of the best-kept secrets I have found that helps me look more awake is in thanks to my brightening eyeliner. A brightening eyeliner is one that is in a lighter shade, making the whites of your eyes pop thus brightening the overall appearance of eyes. My go-to is the Arrow Enhance Waterproof Eyeliner + Brightener. The great thing about a brightening eyeliner is that with just one swipe across the waterline of your eyes, you instantly look wide awake and ready for the day.
3. POWDER FOUNDATION
Having naturally radiant skin is hard to come by. Even with a strict skincare regimen, many women still have uneven skin tones and prefer to cover up with a foundation. I have found that using a full coverage powder foundation saves an enormous amount of time when compared to liquid foundation. Also, powder foundations are typically better for your skin as your skin can still breathe through the makeup. Powder foundations are better options for women with oily or acne-prone skin as well. My favorite is Benefit Cosmetics “Hello Flawless” Powder Foundation!
4. LAY OUT YOUR CLOTHES THE NIGHT BEFORE (EVEN IF IT’S JUST YOUR SCRUBS)
This is such an easy way to cut down time on your morning routine. By setting out your clothes for the next day, you can be better prepared for the day ahead. By avoiding the search through your closet, you can save several minutes. That extra time could be used to eat a better breakfast, read up on the news, or even catch a few extra Zzz’s.
5. PACK YOUR LUNCH AHEAD OF TIME
Meal prepping is extremely common now, especially for busy families and individuals. Having a lunch packed and ready to go will save you a lot of time in the mornings. By having your lunch pre-made, you won’t have to worry about doing it the morning of, while the sun is still rising. This saves you stress, time, and will allow you to prepare an even better meal to keep your day going strong! Allowing yourself to prepare lunches the night before, or for the entire week ahead, you will be able to focus your attention on other tasks and responsibilities.
6. START YOUR COFFEE RIGHT AS YOU WAKE UP
If you still have a traditional coffee pot, have your pot ready to go for the morning. Some coffee makers have timers on them, so your coffee can automatically start brewing at the set time. If not, start the pot as soon as you wake up. This way, once you’re done getting ready for the day, your coffee will be ready to drink with breakfast to help wake you up for the day.
7. MEAL PREP YOUR BREAKFAST! (OR GRAB A BREAKFAST BAR)
You’ve heard of meal prepping for lunches… Now get ready for meal prepping breakfast. Having a full breakfast on workdays is nearly impossible, especially when you have kids. But, we all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day to get your mind and metabolism going. To solve this problem, try preparing breakfast sandwiches ahead of time and keeping them in the freezer. Whenever you are ready to eat one, take it out of the freezer, pop it in the microwave and you have your breakfast in just a few minutes! Or, you can always grab a breakfast bar if all else fails.
10. LISTEN TO YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC AS YOU GET READY- IT WILL HELP YOU MOVE FASTER AND GET YOU IN A MOOD FOR YOUR DAY!
This last tip is to make sure that every day is the best day. Listen to your favorite music while you’re getting ready for work, or on your commute to work! This gets your heart rate up and wakes up your brain, so when you arrive at your workplace, you can be ready to tackle anything that comes your way.

When you head to the dentist's office for your semi-annual checkup, the person you'll be spending the majority of your time with probably won't be the dentist - it will be their hardworking and passionate dental assistant. Dental assistants also happen to be in an incredibly high demand in Indiana in particular for a wide range of different reasons that are more than worth exploring.

WHAT IS A DENTAL ASSISTANT?
Dental assistants are the men and women who prepare a patient for treatment and perform other essential functions like:
Assisting the doctor with the restoration of caries and the fabrication of provisional crowns, veneers, and implants.
Sterilization of instruments.
Holding and Securing All Suction Devices
Properly exposing dental radiographs.
Taking Impressions
Dental assistants are important because they act as an extra pair of hands at all times. This allows the doctor to focus his attention on the minor details that matter the most when a procedure is being performed. When the dentist and assistant can work cohesively to accomplish a task, the highest level of care is performed which in turn provides the best patient satisfaction.
THE JOB OUTLOOK
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for dental assistants between 2014 and 2024 the field is projected to grow at a rate of about 18% per year nationwide - much faster than the national average for all other similar professions. Within the ten year period, 58,000+ new openings for dental assistants are expected to be created across the country.
The occupational demand for Indiana, in particular, is also growing at a similar rate. The Indiana Department of Workforce Development estimates that between 2010 and 2020, the number of dental assistants will increase by 2.9% from 5,764 to 7,642. To put that into perspective, ALL other occupations in the state have an average growth rate of just 1.3%.
In the state of Indiana, dental assistants can expect to earn a median hourly wage of about $17.11. Hourly wages typically begin at around $12 and can go up to $23 per hour or more depending on the circumstances. According to one study, the vast majority of dental assistants in the state of Indiana are full-time employees, coming in at around 69%. The remaining 31% are part-time workers.
This rate will vary depending on experience when you begin your job search, as well as your practice location in the state of Indiana. One study puts the average wage of an entry-level dental assistant in Indianapolis at $14.48 per hour.
Part of the reason why dental assistants are so highly demanded nationally and in Indiana has to do with an increasing emphasis on preventative dental services. As healthcare in the United States continues to improve, most fields are shifting from a reactionary model to a much more proactive one. As insurance plans begin to cover dental services and as people place a higher weight on their oral health in general, more people are going to be visiting their local dentists' offices than ever before. As a result, trained and experienced dental assistants are going to become more necessary (and by association more valuable) over time.

Learn For Things Dental Assistants Wish You Knew When Visiting The Dentist...?
If you visit a dentist, you interact with a dental assistant. Even the smallest dental practice has at least one of these invaluable professionals. However, the public’s perception and understanding of what a dental assistant does is murky at best. In an attempt to clarify their job responsibilities, below are four things that dental assistants wish dental patients knew about their position.

1. DENTAL ASSISTANTS DON’T CLEAN YOUR TEETH.
Dental assistants are frequently confused with dental hygienists. Dental assistants help with x-rays, cleaning instruments, assisting the dentist during treatment and help with post operative procedures.
2. DENTAL ASSISTANTS ARE AN ESSENTIAL AND VITAL PART OF DENTAL OFFICES.
The dentist provides the treatment and the dental assistant provides a multitude of duties that occur before during and after the appointment.
3. BEING A DENTAL ASSISTANT IS A LONG-TERM CAREER THAT CAN REAP MANY BENEFITS, IN OR OUTSIDE THE OFFICE.
In fact, a dental assisting career is one of the fastest growing career choices in the United States. See what you can expect to earn as a future dental assistant. HERE
4. MANY PATIENTS DEPEND ON DENTAL ASSISTANTS TO HELP COMMUNICATE MORE EFFECTIVELY WITH THE DENTIST.
Personal relationships with your patients help them feel confident and secure with treatment plan options.
While there are more than 300,000 dental assistants in the United States, according to U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, this position is largely not well known by the public. The next time you visit the dentist, understand the essential role of these professionals. Make your dental visit the best experience yet.

The Importance Of Understanding HIPAA...?
HIPAA has been in the news a lot during 2016. There are many headlines that tell the painful story of multi-million dollar fines handed out to hospitals because of a patient data breach. The dental industry is more at risk. A modern dental office is almost 100 percent mHealth (mobile health information) and digital patient records are easy to lose. Can understanding the significance of HIPAA help you find a job when you graduate as at Dental Assistant? Absolutely.
Dental Offices and HIPAA Compliance
One of the most common ways to cause a HIPAA violation is simply to talk about patient data where other patients can hear you. That happens a lot in dental offices. Sit back and listen to what you hear. That knowledge is important because it helps us change our own behavior and the process makes us more professional- more hirable.
It is also important to understand how dental offices use patient data and how easy it is to cause a HIPAA violation. It may not be your policy or you may not have written the protocol, but sending an email with patient data is not only common practice it is a HIPAA violation. mHealth must be encrypted and you also have to understand what personal patient information is so that you can recognize it when you see it.

What is Personal Patient Data?
What happens if a patient wants a copy of their digital X-ray. Can you send that by email? What if a patient want to access their lab reports online? Can they? There is no real answer to these questions because there are too many outstanding circumstances that muddy the waters.
These examples help to show you how complex HIPAA is and how easy it is to cause a violation. When it comes to finding a job after your dental assistant program ends, it pays to be able to demonstrate that you understand the complexities of HIPAA as it applies to dentistry. A dental office is very much a team environment but it is also an environment that works closely with the outside public and increases the risks.
Pay attention to your own behaviors and how you handle patient data. The better you get at spotting patient information, the easier it is to develop the skills to handle it appropriately. That skill is highly employable.
At DOT By Lynn, we provide and train all of our dental assistants with the most up to date software and compliance procedures to prepare you for a very successful career in dentistry. If you would like to learn more about our program, please contact us below.

Whole-Dentistry | How Do Dental Assistant’s Fit In?
Healthcare is in constant change and that includes dental offices. One of the big trends over the last five or so years is the emergence of whole-patient dentistry. This is a philosophy where the dentist looks at the entire patient picture and then addresses changes that benefit the patient’s long-term dental health. An example might be to talk with the patient about how to stop smoking, chewing tobacco, or even getting more exercise. The approach is that outside influences impact the quality of everyone’s health, including their dental health.

In traditional dentistry, the dental assistant is a key position that bridges the gap between the patient and the dentist. In the whole-patient model for dental practices, the DA plays an enhanced role that is even more important. While many of the aspects of dental assisting involve treatment, there is an opportunity to further help the dentist address patient health concerns. That role is one of support.
It is the role of the dentist to address health concerns with the patient. It is the role of the DA to provide the information necessary that makes that delicate task not only possible but also successful.
The intake of information is key — Quality information helps the dentist spot key issues such as stress, dietary issues, and even social vices such as smoking or recreational drug use. To be successful at collecting data requires that the DA become familiar with topics that are often uncomfortable to discuss, such as drug use. Be willing to broaden your horizons and learn about the daily lives of people. In so doing, the “uncomfortable” feeling of addressing these issues becomes less. That preparedness can help patients open up about issues so that your can accurately record them and make the dentist aware of those potential problems.
Understanding the DA’s Role — The role that the DA plays is really two-fold. They first help the dentist to provide quality dental services. They secondly help the dentist bridge the gap between patient and dentist. The DA is effectively an ice breaker. How the DA approaches their job is key. Being calm and supportive while effective is not always easy. As you become more familiar with health issues that affect dental health the role becomes easier. While you are in school is a good time to begin that practice. Discuss with your classmates how to approach difficult topics with people you don’t know. Role play is a powerful tool and experience is golden.

Did you know the dental assisting profession has been projected to grow 18 percent during the years of 2014 through 2024, which is much faster than the average for all other occupations? And from there who knows, the sky's the limit. But what exactly does a dental assistant do?

Mark your 2017 calendars for March 5-11: it's Dental Assistant Appreciation Week!
Dental Assistant Appreciation Week was founded by the American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA) for dentists throughout the United States and Canada to show recognition and appreciation for all the hard work that their dental assistants do. Dental assistants play an integral role in patient care and take on various duties in dental practices of all sizes.
Every year, the ADAA decides on a theme for Dental Assistant Appreciation Week. In 2016, the theme was "Patient-focused with passion and purpose." When showing your dental assistants how much you appreciate their hard work, how are you also telling them about the importance they have in providing care to patients? While 2017's theme has not been announced yet, there are ways your practice can prepare for Dental Assistant Appreciation Week. If you are a dental assistant who wants to be recognized, don't be afraid to print out this list and leave it where the practice owner or office manager can see it.
SHOW YOUR DENTAL ASSISTANTS THAT YOU APPRECIATE THEM
If the dental assisting staff makes your time at the dental office more enjoyable, let them know! Everyone enjoys being told they are good at their job. However it doesn’t just have to be dental assistant appreciation week to show your dental office you care. So when you leave the office with pearly whites and minty fresh breath, consider bringing a card or even a Starbucks gift card around the holidays to simply spread some cheer.

Did you know that dentistry plays a very important role in the forensic community? Some dentists specialize their degree by taking courses that enable them to work with forensic scientists to investigate crimes. In unfortunate cases where death is involved, an odontologist will attend the autopsy. Typically they take cranial measurements, dental impressions and also x-rays. Often times, dentists who do this type of work perform regular dentistry most of the time.
WHO KNOWS, MAYBE ONE DAY YOU WILL WORK FOR A FORENSIC DENTIST!

DENTAL RECORDS
A person’s teeth are uniquely different to them. Just like fingerprints! So simply by looking at a person’s tooth you can identify them through previous dental records/impressions and get more information about the case. As a dental assistant, it is required that offices keep impression models for a certain number of years in case they would be needed for a forensic case. So in turn, part of your job might include organizing and keeping track of dental models over the years.
HABITS
You can tell a lot about a person’s habits by what their teeth look like as well. If their occlusal surfaces are worn down, this indicates clenching and grinding, which could mean they were stressed. Smokers typically have yellow-ish tints and receding gum lines.
STRONG SUBSTANCE
Teeth (enamel specifically) is the hardest substance in the human body. So in case of a fire, people can be identified by their teeth which can withstand up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, remnants of gold or amalgam can be found at the scene which aids in identification.
Fun Fact: History & Odontology
1692 was the first instance of odontology being used in a criminal case in the United States. During the Salem Witch Trials, Reverend George Burroughs was accused of witchcraft and biting his victims. The judges accepted the bite marks as valid evidence and he was hanged.

Dental Assisting Allows You To Live a Balanced Lifestyle
It’s not a secret that living a balanced lifestyle leads to a happy life. Dental assisting provides great, flexible hours that in turn allows you to accomplish all of your own personal goals! Here are some tips on how to make sure you’re maximizing your time so you can accomplish your goals, and still have time for work, family, and friends!
1. Time Management
The key to getting started is time management. Sticking to a schedule can sometimes be challenging, but let’s face it you’re a go-getter and have goals and dreams you want to accomplish outside the workplace! Start out small, try adding one activity that you enjoy at a time. Integrate the activities at a reasonable pace – changing your entire routine all at once can be overwhelming and might result in abandonment altogether.
2. Make a Schedule/List
Making a list may sound cliché, but it helps. Write down how to get what you want, not just what you want. Make a reasonable schedule for yourself to stay on track and accomplish your goals. In our 12-week dental assisting program we teach you about the software that creates the day-to-day schedule in a dental office.
3. Make Time for You, Friends, and Family!
Dental offices typically aren’t open on weekends, which allows you to make time for enough free time. Friends, family, relaxing, it’s all important for your mental and physical health. Allow time for your brain to turn “off” so you can unwind.
4. Get Enough Sleep
Dental office’s will keep you on your toes! Some days can be very busy and require you to be on your feet most of the time. You’ll need a good night’s rest behind you if you want to be a successful dental assistant, and be successful in our EFDA or assisting program.

How To Win Your Dental Assistant Interview?
Preparing for an interview can make you a little nervous just as any other job interview would. If you truly want to go into this field, there’s no need to be nervous though. Here’s what you need to know for acing your interview with small and medium dental practices.
Identify what makes you a great fit for this role
Regardless of the job, most employers are looking for people who are passionate — be able to explain what makes you passionate about the job. Do you have a personal reason for choosing dentistry? Did you choose this field because it is interesting to you?You are a healthcare professional now, and in healthcare the patient’s best interest is always our #1 priority. Explain why helping people take care of their oral health is important to you. Sharing anything you like about dentistry is great, it helps an employer get to know if you would be a good fit for that particular office.
Explain what you’re looking for in a job
Not everyone likes the same type of work environment, and that’s okay! Be honest and explain what type of environment you work best in, that way you and your potential employer can determine if you would mesh well with the office.
Look Up Information Prior to your Interview
Read the practice’s website — this should have information about procedures, office pictures, and a general history of how the practice came about. Look up LinkedIn profiles, health grades, and accreditations the doctor has. Does this practice participate in any community health initiatives like providing mobile dental services to low-income neighborhoods or making outreach efforts that other dental practices haven’t tried?Discuss what you liked reading about with the interviewer and how it aligns with your goals and values, and why you feel you could contribute a great deal to the dentistry field by working at their practice.
