A black haired woman sat on the roof, high above the castle ground. Her hair flowed free, her clothes but a nightgown, her white skin glowed in the pale moonlight.

She watched the stars, she watched the moon, trying to see… something. She wasn’t sure what. What was that she was looking for, again? A bird, perhaps? They were asleep, so perhaps a bat? No, bat’s are small, they can hide behind the twinkling lights. No, it was bigger, but alas, she couldn’t remember.

‘Hollow’, they had said. That’s what she was now. A hollow one, hollow like a dead tree or a rubber ball. Hollow, like an empty kettle with no tea.

“I don’t even care for tea…” she had said, and some had laughed, but she had not. She didn’t care to laugh anymore. Or smile, or frown, nor cry. Everything felt like nothing.

Empty. Like a sad empty jar that once had sweets inside.

She used to be sweet, so she was told. She was chosen for a reason to stand by the king and queen. She was caring, kind and sweet. Now, she was nothing of the sort. Not that she was rude or mean, no, she simply just was. Like a statue, she stood on her post, waiting for instructions, and she did them with no questions asked, but not with a smile or with a frown.

She simply just was.

Her chest was hollow, where she could swear her heart once beat. Now, an empty chamber.

“Perhaps I should put a clock inside… That way I would know when to sleep” She spoke to herself while she sat on the roof, watching the sky, hoping to catch a glimpse of what she had forgotten.

“I wish I had cared to remember…” she sighed.
