This month I’m doing the fic rec bingo created by wild-aloof-rebel. If you have time I suggest doing it, it’s been a lot of fun! I’m a glutton for punishment so I’m doing the whole blackout. Continuing on that path I’m also not repeating a single author or reccing fics that I have already recced before. Some people bring in consultants to help get their new business off the ground. David Rose, entirely by accident (or so he claims) gets a fairy.

Thoughts: This fic fufills the bingo square: A favorite au. Y’all I’ve loved fantasy/fairies since I was like a toddler and it’s never left me so when i saw this during OFN I lost my shit. Rip to my sister who had to listen to me wax on about this fic because I loved it so much.

First of all this fic is right up my alley with the deadpan, trolling humor. Like Patrick having a RAZR? Check! Forced to eat sugary food? Check! David having 0 idea how fairies work and all the shenanigans that come from that? Check! Every time I read it I end up giggling and cackling and Patrick is such a little shit and I LOVE it. Plus the addition of Rachel near the end is perfection.

Also if none of this encourages you to read it, a sequel was recently published and it is goddamn fantastic and gives you all the good, good content that fleshes out the universe answering any questions you might have had in the first one.

“As 2019 drew its last gasp, earlylight slid into whetherwoman’s DMs with a proposition: to co-write something of an epilogue to the urban fantasy AU she’d just published, delving into the mechanics of human-fairy sex. WW, a connoisseur of fine smut, was like, well as long as I don’t have to write jokes, and EL was like, GREAT, because my sexy writing skills leave much to be desired (pun intended) but I LOVE writing jokes (case in point). So EL sent over a thousand-word primer on fairy reproductive biology; an academic paper on the sensory capacity of insect wings was consulted after WW posited the question ‘could wings be an erogenous zone?’; sections of writing were literally printed out and rearranged; and, thus, what was meant to be a short PWP coda cannonballed into a straight-up novella length exploration of navigating a relationship in its early stages in a world where the Motorola RAZR is a magic conduit for wishes. In summary: like an unholy alliance between Frankenstein and Frank-N-Furter, we have created a monster. Enjoy!”

Some Favorite Fics from 2019

Before I dive into my list, let me send out some love to ALL of the authors who have contributed fic to this fandom this year. There are well over 300 people who wrote Schitt’s Creek fic this year, and you’ve brought joy to so many people and should be super proud of what you’ve written, whether it was only 100 words or 100k. I’ve personally read more than 6.5 million words of fic in this fandom this year, and I want to thank you all for every single one of them. <3

Now, in continuing this year-end love fest we’ve had going on the last few days, I also want to highlight some of my favorite fics from this year. I decided to cut myself off at twenty fics or we’d end up with a list too big to be allowed, lol. I also decided to limit myself to one fic per author in order to spread the love around as much as possible; there would definitely be some repeat authors on this list otherwise. 

And now with all that in mind, I’ll shut up and get on with it. 

Here are twenty of my favorite fics from this year and what I love about them…

this roof is a blanket by withkissesfour • rated M • 3k+ I love Patrick-centric fics. He’s such a beautiful character, but because he isn’t one of the four Roses, we miss out on a lot of his pov in the show, so I’m always here for fics that try to capture that. And this one does it beautifully, focusing on four different but thematically-connected moments in Patrick’s life.

We’re Getting Something for Free by MoreHuman • rated G • 1k+ This is one of those fics where you can see how much Patrick KNOWS David and loves him for exactly who he is. His refusal to let David villainize himself for just being who he is makes my heart so very happy.

Heart of Gold by barelypink • rated M • 40k+ I love love LOVE a good AU, but AUs based on other media can be really tricky to get right. The best ones take elements from both sources and elevate them into something fresh and new, and this fic does exactly that.

now you see me by grapehyasynth • rated T • 4k+ Did I mention that I love AUs? I never get tired of seeing them meet in new ways, and their New York-set blind date in this one just makes me smile a whole hell of a lot.

I’m All Lost (in the supermarket) by sullymygoodname • rated G • 9k+ This fic combines David “Good Person” Rose, headless mannequins, tiny cardboard houses, karaoke, ugly sweaters, and all the friendship and shenanigans you can possibly stand. What’s not to love?

I know, I’m strange, too much light makes me nervous by another_Hero • rated T • 4k+ I’m so in love with the entire premise for this soulmate AU and everything that it says about love and the choices that we make because of it.

Pizza Night by smoulderandbraids • rated M • 4k+ Sometimes you just need to read about them making pizza and making out. Thank goodness this fic exists for those times. It’s a straightforward concept executed perfectly.

cinnamon sugar… by startswithhope • rated T • 1k+ All of startswithhope’s fics have a lovely softness to them that almost seems nostalgic, like you can feel yourself missing them before you’re even done reading them. This one I think captures that feeling best and most explicitly–David’s mood here is exactly that kind of nostalgia. And his thoughts about Stevie near the beginning are something that I’ve found myself thinking about over and over again since I first read this.

On My Way by Distractivate • rated M • 11k+ As much as I love the happy place that is this show, I also really love fic that acknowledges that sometimes relationships are hard, that things aren’t always perfect, that love is a CHOICE which has to be actively made again and again and again. This fic showcases exactly that. Love isn’t always easy, but choosing to love each other anyway is always worth it.

around us by lamphouse • rated G • 1k+ This one is a simple idea, written with a soft touch, and every time I re-read it, I’m crying by the time David says “I want to stand still.”

of all the riches. by falconeggs • rated T • 9k+ Who doesn’t love a good celebrity AU? This one is as cute as you could possibly want it to be, from their first meeting to taking their relationship public. It’s just a little slice of joy.

Overreacting by codswallop • rated M • 17k+ Fics dealing with hospital visits and illnesses and things of that sort can easily tip over into whumpy territory (which is totally fine if that’s what you’re looking for), but this fic goes a different direction and manages to be funny and sweet and charming while balancing the anxiety of waiting for news. David and Patrick’s dynamic here is so good; they’re both sharp and funny and vulnerable and messy in turn, joking like normal when they can, lifting each other up when they can’t.

101 by Hth • rated E • 8k+ Like I said, I love fics that acknowledge that things aren’t always perfect, and there’s nothing more rife for imperfection than a first night spent together. Their night at Stevie’s is the perfect setting for starting to navigate some difficult conversations, especially in the wake of Jake’s unexpected appearance, and this fic does a great job of getting them through the nerves and the talking and the the stops and starts of that night. And their last two lines of dialogue are perfection.

The Sidelines by wildhoneypie • rated T • 5k+ Comedy is so much harder to write than you might expect, and I am constantly awed by how well this fic does it. It feels effortless and in-character and in line with the kind of humor that beats at the heart of the show, all while still capturing that instant, playful attraction between David and Patrick. It’s just such a fun read.

holy sick divine by earlylight • rated T • 36k+ If the tags “Strangers who Met in a Field to Coworkers to Friends to Lovers” and “Paperwork - But Make It Sexy” don’t endear you to this fic before you even start it, I don’t know what to tell you. My favorite part of this story is actually the role reversal of Patrick being Stevie’s best friend, Patrick having dated Jake, etc. That’s just one way that this fic takes everything we know and turns it on its head, and it does it with good humor and such a strange sweetness. It’s utterly unique, and the final scene just burrows down into your heart and sets up house there.

A Fair Return by thingswithwings • rated E • 237k+ This is probably the most insanely well-crafted canon retelling I’ve seen in my life. It adds so much backstory to the show and makes you rethink scenes you know intimately, which is what any good canon retelling should do. The OCs and the ways they’re carved into the structure of the story we know are where this fic particularly shines; it’s so, so well done.

my heart was broke, my head was sore by blueink3• rated M • 31k+ I think the only thing better than fake dating might be the exact reverse: having to pretend you’re not dating when you are. Even though they’re technically together, there’s just so much opportunity for pining and angst (both of which blueink3 always does SO fucking well), and this fic takes that to another level by adding in the fragile newness of their relationship and the anxiety of a family medical scare. David is so, so careful with Patrick here, and I love every single word of it.

let’s go dancing in the light by goingmywaydoll • rated G • 2k+ It was so difficult to narrow this down to one fic by goingmywaydoll because I absolutely love everything she does, but ultimately I went with her first one for this fandom. I’m SUCH a sucker for David and Patrick seeing each other before the wedding, and David having anxiety about not having anxiety is pretty much the most David thing possible. The characterization, the dialogue, the whole entire mood of the fic–it’s all absolutely spot-on. This one is everything I could ever want from wedding fic.

for feelings unbound by wardo_wedidit • rated E • 20k+ Picking one single fic by wardo_wedidit was also a near-impossible task, but ultimately I had to go with this one because it’s honestly perfect. David’s empath abilities add SO much to his characterization and the trajectory of his relationship with Patrick, and it fills this fic with so many gorgeous moments that leave you feeling like maybe there really is magic in the world–and this fic has plenty of it.

Watching Through Windows by helvetica_upstart • rated E • 38k+ Every single moment of this fic is heartbreaking in the best possible way. Reading it is like cracking yourself open and then putting yourself back together a little stronger. Watching David learn about the man he’d grown into and have to decide if he wants to (or even can) become that man all over again is simultaneously gut-wrenching and soul-healing. And Patrick in this fic–god, what can I even say about him? He’s so understanding and GOOD, even when he’s terrified and heartbroken. He is absolutely everything. Everything. This story is 100% perfection from start to finish, and the bench scene in particular is hands down the best scene in any fic I’ve read this year.

He likes to be a gentleman – Mr. Order Whatever You Want I’m Paying and Mr. Here Let Me Fix That For You and Mr. No David Not In the Backseat I Want It to Be Special – so David can’t entirely rely on Patrick’s willingness to charge forward for the greater good.

It’s the first thing Patrick notices.” Or, Patrick wins a ticket onto the first civilian voyage to populate New Earth, and he’s determined to face his fears and change his life. The one thing he didn’t plan on was David Rose.

Slowly I Turn, or, Niagara Falls by CartWrite (rated E) Even though David has volunteered to spearhead the wedding planning and should be good at it, he has been utterly paralyzed when it’s come to making any decisions. And now he has to spend the weekend with Patrick’s parents visiting some tourist trap and he is not okay.

Sometimes Good Things Fall Apart by blueink3 (rated M) What if David and Patrick didn’t survive the Rachel reveal? What if David fell back into destructive behavior and a pattern of bad relationships? What if, to get out of a bad relationship, he calls on the one person who actually truly cared about him?

I gotta be honest, I saw this post earlier this week and clutched my face with no small amount of delight. Anyway, HI. IT WAS ME. 

Okay so caveat that there have been so many amazing fics coming out of the Schitt’s Creek Open Fic Night exchange, but like - this story is - GUYS.

CHAPTER TWO IS CALLED if music be the food of love, alexa, play ‘gimme more’

AND LIKE: 

When he comes to, it’s to a ring of concerned faces of his team and one (1) best friend. David is not among them. “I’m fine, I’m okay,” Patrick says, sitting up. “Just a bit of heatstroke, maybe.” He waves off his teammates’ offers of help, instead letting Stevie lead him over to an area in the shade, where he gulps down nearly a whole waterbottle and splashes the rest on his face. “What happened?” he asks her.

“Well, from my perspective, you went over to flirt with David, and then I guess in the moment you thought a sexy move would be to just keel over onto the ground. So, basically, you did the baseball strike, not the bowling one.”

“Oh my god,” Patrick says, burying his head in his hands. “This is a nightmare. I have to see him on Monday, Stevie, I need to move town, immediately.”

“Did he show you a flash of ankle?” Stevie asks, seriously. “Did you get a case of the vapours?”

Time moves like this, in fits and starts – there’s that scene from, one of those sci-fi movies: someone puts two dots on a piece of paper and then folds them together, punching a pencil through. There’s her kitchen on one side and her kitchen on the other, and Angela’s punched through from one moment to the next, air hazed sweet-sharp with smoke, softening the light.

A fragment of time, as Angela hosts Ladies’ Night, pertaining to exactly this: they are ladies, and it is night. Written as part of Femslash Feb ‘19.

any thoughts on tyrell? (does he cry during sex?)

hahaha, if very strong feelings are involved, he’d probably shed a few tears. for sure if robot had let him do what he really wanted to do on his knees in the arcade then he would’ve definitely wept with worshipful joy in the process, but aside from that i think it’d be more rare than you think? the sense i get from tyrell is that he’s frequently used sex as simply a tool to get something he actually desires more, so a lot of it is tied up in that emotional detachment. plus seemingly acting as a service top/dom for joanna for whatever duration of their relationship – to me i think he has sex for enjoyment somewhat infrequently, and it’s not a particular priority for him with a partner in a relationship compared to, say, emotional intimacy. as martin wallstrom said (or tweeted, can’t remember the origin), he can be a very romantic guy! man this is a meaty paragraph for something you probably threw in there jokingly but there you go.

aside from that, let’s see… a bunch of my tyrell headcanons are kind of tied up in this thing i’m considering writing a few months down the track, so i don’t want to talk too much about them since they’d be ~plot points~ in that, lol. one i will say is that i firmly believe that, unlike the aldersons, tyrell actually had a warm, loving family – but they were poor. not struggling as such but living very humbly, probably out in the country, since tyrell chopped a lot of wood in his youth. in that sense tyrell grew to resent his life and in particular his father for not striving to do better to provide for their family – to learn english so as to have a chance at getting a better job, saw his prioritisation of family life rather than sacrificing that to bring in more money as weakness and unwillingness to step up – and then drove himself to be everything his father was not by learning english, getting a university degree, leaving sweden for america, trying to furiously climb the corporate ladder, be the perfect provider for joanna and their child. i don’t know if sam is ever gonna explore that since we’re getting closer to the endgame now (probably not tbh), so until then thems the facts!

whos your favorite mr robot character? do you have any headcanons for them?

my fave mr. robot character is… mr. robot! he is a terrible asshole and i love him. his volatile, reactionary personality, how he oscillates between honed competence and bratty immaturity, his complicated relationship with elliot, basically his whole existence is deeply interesting to me.

in terms of headcanons, i probably don’t have as many for him as i would for other characters on the show – an easy one would be that i see him as aromantic, in the sense that he’s openly flirty and sexual yet keeps everyone but elliot firmly at arm’s length emotionally (see: krista, the whole ‘redheads make my dick soft’ scene in S1, wasn’t there for tyrell’s romantic proclamation but was absolutely into getting erotically punched up by him, etc.)

one other thing is i don’t believe he considers himself to be ‘edward’ any more than he accepts the ‘mr. robot’ label that elliot gives him – as in, he still considers actual edward alderson™ to be his father/doesn’t see elliot as his son, etc. my interpretation of why he wears edward’s appearance and adopts some of his mannerisms (’kiddo’, mainly, and that whole scene in S1 where he’s like ‘i will never leave you’) is partly from the need to aggressively ‘reclaim’ edward’s shortcomings, his weakness (through being pretty much the opposite of what we are currently aware edward was like) and partly to present as the ideal person elliot would need to lean on given his close relationship with their dad – basically, both sides coming into play as his duality of existence, in being both this aggressive, driving force, elliot’s 'dark side’, and at the same time his protector, ride-or-die. with that rationale he’s kind of walking a balancing act between antagonising elliot and helping him, because his existence essentially depends on elliot needing him to be around (which is what i took from ‘they’ll try to get rid of me again and you can’t let them’ etc in that same S1 scene).

anyway!!! sam and his team write great antagonists and i’m super excited to see elliot and robot working as a team again next season :’)

Irving squints down at his hand. “Uh, grattis på födelsedagen.”

Today’s the eleventh, then – he’d nearly forgotten. Unfortunately, it seems Irving hadn’t. “That was… almost Swedish,” Tyrell says dully, turning back to his computer.

“The big three-three, huh?” Irving continues, as though it actually means something. “Wouldn’t have had you pegged as a Cancer. You’ve always struck me as more of a, ah, Gemini kinda guy.”

Tyrell has a birthday up at the cabin; Irving tries to make the best of it. Part of a series I’m dubbing ‘cabin fever’ that began with deconstruction, or, the art of repair, featuring cake and crying, as the best birthdays tend to involve. Spoilers up and until Mr. Robot S03E03.
