How can pretty notes like yours be practical? It seems like too much decision-making for the task of trying to understand and record material. Sure, it's great for showing other people, but if notes can't be done in a quick and dirty fashion, I don't see the point of taking them at all. It seems to me as if you're writing textbooks rather than writing notes. I don't mean to sound negative; I'm genuinely curious as to how you make it practical.
hi there, my “pretty” notes are never done in class when i’m trying to understand and record material. out of ALL the notes i take, probably 10% can be considered as the ‘tumblr worthy” pretty notes-the ones i put a lot of time into rewriting. i don’t have time to do it often because for me, it can be impractical, depending on the circumstances. that doesn’t mean it can’t be useful however.
during class, i either take messy handwritten ones, or electronic ones on the computer if the class is very fast paced and typing is easier.
if you’re anything like me, looking at messy notes does nothing for me. I don’t process anything. Therefore making pretty notes are a means of transforming all the knowledge I have learnt and understood. Compiling it into an accessible notebook where i can refer to in the future can be helpful. additionally, the process of making it “pretty” can sometimes help me remember content a bit more as i remember the experience of writing it.
also, the pretty notes are not the only aspect of review and studying for me. there’s a lot of messy scribbling on my whiteboard to figure out concepts, testing myself
but yes, pretty notes can be impractical, it all depends on the person. some artsy or neat people don’t need to put much effort into their notes before they can be considered “pretty notes”, but to them it might just be whatever is natural for them.
they are certainly not done in class for me, where the priority is to absorb information. the one subject i do put effort in making pretty notes for, is biology, as it is such a visual content heavy subject. it’s good to have a notebook full of neat, aesthetically pleasing notes i have taken myself- to refer back to when studying.
so yes, for me it would be terribly impractical to invest hours on rewriting beautiful notes for every subject i take, especially since i have so many other responsibilities. but this is just for me, like i said, it’s different for everyone. some people might just naturally have amazing notes without trying and making lots of decisions, other people might just have the time, or have less content to cover for their study.
i apologise or this terribly long-winded answer but i hope i somehow made my point. yes, the most popular studyblr posts are pretty notes. however, that doesn’t necessarily mean that is the entire story, so the practicality all depends on the person. all i know is that i certainly wouldn’t continue doing something if it were impractical, and unbeneficial for me.
tdlr: it differs for everyone. if it isn’t practical for you, don’t do it. find what works for you. i don’t make pretty notes for everything, because that is impractical for me. making some notes pretty are useful for me and therefore practical with the time i have :)

I was that girl that wouldn’t even drink a small bottle of water the whole day, but now I’m the girl that always has to pee with water as her bf. Here are my tips how I managed this!
I. remind yourself
You could install an app that reminds you (x, x, x) or keep a water tracker in your bullet journal. Also why don’t put sticky notes everywhere with a cute reminder! Make a goal for the day and try to achieve it.
II. make it a routine
Or invole drinking water in it. Right after you get up, before you eat, when you water your plants, before and after doing sports, just make it a habit.
III. carry a water bottle
Wherever you’re going always take a water bottle with you. Going to school? Extra plus water. Going out with friends? Still pack a bottle. As well place a glass/bottle of water in your workspace and by your bed, not just in the kitchen. This way you always see the water and drink without thinking.
IV. find your form of water
Firstly you don’t have to drink plain water. Try tea, water with lemon or other fruits or mixed with a little bit of juice (great masterpost). Then, why always from the bottle the water is sold or a glass? You could use a mason jar, invest in a cute and practical bottle, use a straw or even use a mug. Variation makes water drinking more fun!!
V. motivation
why even drink water? Here some reasons:
makes your skin glow and moisturised
healthy body
less darker circels (yass)
if you want to lose weight it helps
helps a lot with headaches (srsly)
smooth lips
easier to concentrate
energyyy
improves your mood
But don’t overdrink! Remeber you get a big portion of water from your food and try not to force it. Your body know what it needs, listen to it.

i’m going to be straight up with this. when you’re in college, especially around exams/midterms, there seems like there’s no time to do everything you need to accomplish, much less care for yourself. i’ve devised a list of five small, relatively quick ways to get in some self care time during those weeks where you barely have enough time to catch your breath.
i. get some sunshine
set down your pens, close your notebook momentarily, and step outside your building. taking a break from your studies and getting a breath of fresh air can be so motivating! take a small break from your study session in the library. you don’t have to make it an hour long endeavor: just step outside for 30 seconds, a minute, five, however long you feel like, and take a minute to breathe. bonus points if you leave your technology at your desk.
ii. drink some water
this may seem trivial, but you would be surprised by how often you forget to hydrate. it doesn’t have to be a tall glass or an entire water bottle, but take some time to travel to the water fountain and take a sip! not only will you get a small break from your activity, but you’ll get a refreshing pick me up! throw in a healthy snack! here’s a masterpost of some cheap + low maintenance power snacks worthy of a college student’s affection.
iii. take a quick shower
showering helps relieve tension, and help you sleep better! turn on your favorite song and stay in the shower for as long as you have the time to devote to it. wash the stress from the day off or just stand under the warm water. whatever you decide to do, it is sure to be relaxing and refreshing so you can get back to doing all of the amazing work you’re doing! even if you don’t wash your hair or your body, taking a moment to relax and breathe can really help you with your activities for the rest of the day.
iv. clean/organize your desk
personally, i clean/organize when i’m stressed out. if this is something that helps calm you down, go for it! if this is not necessarily a go to stress relieving practice for you, take a look at your study space. have you been in the library all day? throw away any trash leftover from your midday snack, and recycle any papers you might not need anymore! has it been a few weeks since you cleaned off your desk or reorganized your stationery? take five minutes and tidy up your study space! a change of pace can be so helpful when it comes to finding your motivation to continue working.
v. take a short nap
i know what you’re thinking: this is a slippery slope. it can be, but knowing when you really do need a nap is part of being an adult! i try my hardest not to take naps unless absolutely necessary, but sometimes i do need to unplug, close my notebooks, and crawl into bed to recharge. don’t write off naps as an act you can never indulge in. if you have a bad night and don’t get enough sleep, your productivity will be affected. science shows that you should nap for either 45 or 90 minutes so you don’t screw your rhythms up! regardless of whether or not you are the royalty of napping, or someone who tries their hardest to refrain from napping, remember that naps are more than okay sometimes, and that sleep is a necessity if you want to be the best student you can be!
i can’t say this enough: taking time for yourself, especially in college, is so important. when you feel better about yourself, you have more time to devote to studying and doing the things you love! try to make a habit of doing a self care activity, be it one i mentioned above or something completely different, for at least 10 minutes every day. you will feel refreshed, motivated, and prepared to continue your studies! i am wishing everyone the best of luck! as always, if you have questions or suggestions, please send me an ask.
