what’s prototypicality? It sounds super interesting - is it a semiotics thing or more of an art thing?

Prototypicality is basically an answer to hard categorical boundaries. It's a semantics (and sometimes syntax) thing.

Think about the category "fruit". Aside from being what I see whenever I look in the mirror first thing in the morning, how do you define fruits in such a way that includes all fruits and excludes all nonfruits?

There are fruits that tend to come to mind earlier- apples, oranges, pears, and bananas. These are more prototypical fruits. That doesn't mean that tomatoes, olives, and figs are somehow less fruity. They're just less prototypical. Same with robins as opposed to penguins in the class of birds.

Prototypical apples are red, but green and yellow apples exist, etc. Specifically in the arena of colors, I'm looking at which hues of colors are more prototypical than others. Which red is the reddest red? Is indigo blue or purple? Etc

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.

Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.

So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.

Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.
