While this isn’t a Post It, a selected number of artists were asked to create a 10”x10” inch piece of art that will be included in the #PostItShow18 curated by @mark _todd and Eric Nakamura opening at @giantrobot @giantrobotstore this Saturday, December 3, 2022. I based all my work for this show on folklore. Not a surprise. So why a dancer? Folklore and the act of dancing are both an expression of preservation. Ote’a, a dance form with Tahiti origins, exists as a way of retelling stories from Polynesian ancestors. A form of expression that is now globally practiced. Rakugaki translated into English roughly means to sketch or doodle. Something that leads you into the mind of an artist. It is so fitting to have this painting here not only because this is based on a story in Honolulu but because it sits in a cultural institution, The Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum. The story is fascinating! In the early 1980s, there was an incident at the Wahiawa Elementary School. Students described seeing a woman with a malformed head, missing nose, scaly green skin, claw-like hands and webbed feet. Apparently, the Honolulu Police Department arrived on scene to interview witnesses. The more important issue was the potential for trespassing on school grounds. Since that incident there has been no reported sightings of her. Although, she does live on. And you can meet her when you visit “POW! WOW! The First Decade, From Hawaii to the World” at the @bishopmuseum, curated by by @thinkspace_art and @mrjasperwong. This massive exhibition spotlights a decade worth of Pow! Wow! Hawaii and the friendships that blossomed from it. Opening to the public on Sunday, May 16.
