Some of my favorite shots from some new work for @dockerskhakis Recognize Campaign! This month we highlight Dr. Roderick Little, the band director at Jackson State University. During the interview he spoke about inspiration, history, and his path to being band director. I personally was inspired to hear that he started as a band student playing in the stands to now creating the formations and scores that the band @sonicboom_ots now plays. It was my first time on an HBCU campus, as desperately as I always wanted to go. The history was palpable and beyond inspiring. Can’t wait to go back and highlight more amazing folks doing the work at HBCUs. Excited to finally share some new work shot by me for @reebok Human Rights is Now Campaign Thrilled to have worked on a project that wants to highlight and inspire human rights and human movement. The brand is bringing it back to its roots by keeping the graphics inspired by the 1988 Human Rights Now! World Tour. Through this and other initiatives, reebok reaffirms it’s commitment to stand United against racism through creating a more inclusive enviornment but also contributing and promoting Black and LatinX communities. And would you believe it - we are in stores and billboards everywhere! I used to walk through the NYC streets looking at images on store fronts dreaming of the day I can say I shot it. Juneteenth Joy Special Issue cover shot by me for @wwd Photographing @dapperdanharlem @meccajw @bibbygregory @_alexisbennett @chan_inthecity Words and article by @vqvaughns So cool that this comes at a moment when Juneteenth has finally been recognized and declared a national holiday. That being said, let’s not forget about all the noise currently being made about critical race theories, and how some feel like they should not be taught in schools. Bills are being introduced teaching of things like race equality and white privilege, claiming that it “makes students feel bad.” To teach about historical racism and its impact on the modern US is to learn the truth. Somehow learning history has been deemed racist and socially divisive. So far, legislation like this has been proposed in 22 states, and signed into law in five - Idaho, Iowa, Oklahoma, Texas, and Tennessee. It’s never fun to look back at the skeletons in your closet, but by doing so, you can stop someone else from making those same mistakes. Celebrate Blackness today, all day, everyday. Call out the things that need to be called out. Never settle, and never be contempt with what’s given to you. A national holiday is beautiful, but it’s just the start. We are never easing off the gas. This cover is intense for a reason: it’s ‘cause we not done yet. Photographed @paperboytheprince for @bust_magazine styled by @i_am_sprinklez For those who don’t know, he is running for Mayor of NYC. Voting is such an important right. 2020 election had the highest voter turnout in 120 years. It’s insane that State lawmakers have introduced 361 bills in 47 states as of March 2021 to restrict access to vote. Just as important as the vote, are the options for candidates. I’m encouraged to see that people from all backgrounds have been getting involved not only in voting, but in the political process and running for positions. I hope to see more diversity, as well as younger faces, in government buildings from local to federal government. Representatives to represent the actual people, instead of corporate interests. People who are willing to work across the aisle and come to a compromise. This past weekend, @rawgallerynyc hosted “Style Can’t Be Bought”. A pop up event by @i.ish__ brand called @thinkersonlyinc I was commissioned to take the photographs that were used as marketing tools for the event, were hung in the space, and will be used on the website for continued sales. I loved working with this group, who want to encourage open minded thinking and an overall forward thinking mindset for our communities.
