What are the 7 safety measures for controlling hazardous chemicals?
Operational Control Measures in Chemical Handling
Any chemical that can cause a harmful effect on human health, property or environment; due to their chemical properties, can be termed as a hazardous chemical. The risks associated with such chemicals include toxicity, flammability, reactivity and corrosiveness. As most of these chemicals find their place in manufacturing units, warehouses, laboratories and logistics facilities; special care shall be taken while handling such items, as per the existing dangerous goods/ hazardous materials safety protocols. The person who is handling these chemicals should be well-informed regarding the risks to health caused by exposure to these chemicals, necessary precautionary measures, hazard identification and control measures including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and the emergency response procedures associated with each class of chemicals. Having mentioned that, the UN classification for hazardous chemicals, with nine classes of potentially dangerous goods, include the following:
Tumblr media
As safety consultants, who provide expertise and guidance on managing risks associated with handling, storing, transporting, and disposing of chemicals in various industries; we come across numerous such incidents where lack of operational control measures leading to high-risk scenarios. During risk assessments, regulatory compliance audits/studies as well as safety trainings; we make sure to identify/communicate the hazards associated with operations such as storage, handling and transportation of chemicals, based on the international as well as local safety guidelines and regulations. The key operational control measures commonly employed in chemical storage facilities include:
Proper segregation of chemicals based on the UN compatibility chart (or any local guidelines, if necessary) to prevent chemical reactions leading to explosions, fires or release of toxic fumes.
· Correct labelling, including details such as name and class of the chemical, hazards associated, safety instructions for handling and emergency contact details, on individual containers.
· Inspections on a periodic basis, to check the integrity of containers. Also, prompt replacement of damaged containers is a necessary measure.
· If the chemical’s Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) demands specific conditions for storage room ventilation or temperature control; such conditions need to be met in order to prevent the buildup of hazardous vapours or gases in storage areas.
· During accidental spillages, proper spill containment measures including secondary containment basins should be in place to contain the contaminated water. Further treatment needs to be carried out to prevent the entry of effluent into common drain lines.
· Emergency response equipment including spill kits, eyewash stations, first aid kits and fire extinguishers should be provided within the storage facility at an easily accessible location.
· The operational control measures also include the use of appropriate PPEs, and personnel training on chemical handling and emergency preparedness.
During handling of potentially hazardous chemicals, it is advised to bring in safer design and installation practices such as totally enclosed process and handling systems; plants processes or work systems which minimize generation of, or suppress or contain, hazardous dust, fumes, etc., and which limit the area of contamination in the event of spills and leaks. Work systems and practices can also align accordingly to reduce the number of workers exposed and exclusion of non-essential access into the storage/process area.
For flammable or explosive chemicals, which are highly vulnerable to variations in ambient conditions should be provided with methods for elimination of sources of ignition and for the creation of an inert atmosphere for totally enclosed processes. Provisions such as fire detection alarms, means for detecting pressure variations, etc. can also be considered for the enhancement of safety measures.
The following control measures shall be adopted during the transport of chemicals:
· The criteria established by the competent authority shall be followed while transporting potentially hazardous chemicals.
· There will be limits on the quantity of chemicals that can be transported at any point of time, and this has to be strictly adhered to, in order to ensure safer conveyance of goods.
· The type and integrity of packaging materials used, the specifications of the vehicle used for carrying the freight and the routes that shall be taken are also major considerations when it comes to the safe transportation of chemicals.
· The transport workers need to undergo work-specific trainings to meet the safety criteria for loading and unloading of chemical goods.
Another important aspect of operational control is the proper disposal and treatment of chemicals, which include measures to eliminate/minimize the risk to safety and health and to the environment, in accordance with the local/international regulations.
Waste products need to be clearly identified as such, both based on their origins and their primary components, especially if known. The primary components should be discerned from the product’s history. If there is uncertainty regarding the level of hazard posed by the waste, it should be classified according to the highest potential hazard. Containers that are empty but still contain traces of hazardous chemicals should be sealed and stored until disposal or reuse. They should be handled as if they still contain those hazardous chemicals. Additionally, these empty containers should maintain the same identification, markings, and labelling as they had for their previous contents. Effluent discharge, waste disposal and transportation, and emission of smoke and chemicals into the atmosphere must be conducted in a manner that prevents or minimizes risks to workers. Alternatively, they should align with national laws and practices aimed at safeguarding the general public and the environment.
EHS Consultants, with our 40 plus man-years of experience in supporting industries by providing solutions to health, safety and environmental risk-scenarios, followed by trainings on chemical handling as well as various emergency response/occupational safety; helps your business to reduce risks, ensure regulatory compliance, and create safer working environments for the employees.

What is in emergency first aid?
Emergency first aid refers to the initial care provided to someone who has been injured or is experiencing a sudden illness. The primary goals of basic first aid are to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, and promote recovery. While not a substitute for professional medical care, CRP first aid can make a significant difference in the outcome of an emergency situation. Here are some common elements of emergency first aid:
1. Assessment:
Ensure your safety and the safety of others.
Assess the situation and identify any potential hazards.
Check the person's responsiveness and breathing.
2. Activation of Emergency Medical Services (EMS):
Call for professional medical help by dialing the emergency number.
3. CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation):
If the person is not breathing or has no pulse, CPR may be necessary. This involves chest compressions and rescue breaths.
4. AED (Automated External Defibrillator):
Use an AED if available. AEDs can deliver an electric shock to the heart to restore a normal rhythm in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.
5. Control of Bleeding:
Apply direct pressure to wounds to control bleeding.
Elevate the injured limb if possible.
Use a tourniquet as a last resort if bleeding cannot be controlled by other means.
6. Treatment of Shock:
Keep the person warm.
Have them lie down with their legs elevated (unless it causes further injury).
7. Treatment of Burns:
Cool the burn with running water for at least 10 minutes.
Cover the burn with a clean, non-stick bandage.
8. Treatment of Fractures and Sprains:
Immobilize the injured area.
Use a splint if available.
9. Choking Maneuver:
Perform the Heimlich maneuver for a conscious choking victim.
10. Seizure Management:
Protect the person from injury by moving nearby objects.
Place the person on their side after the seizure to maintain an open airway.
11. Assisting with Medications:
Assist the person in taking any prescribed medications if necessary.
12. Providing Comfort and Reassurance:
Keep the person calm and reassured.
Offer comfort and support.
It's important to note that first aid techniques may vary based on the specific situation and the resources available. Additionally, receiving formal first aid training from certified organizations can enhance your ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.

Environment, Social and Governance (ESG)- The New Era of Corporate Sustainability
ESG is a terminology that is slowly gaining importance among sustainability-enthusiasts who are aware of the fact that committing to environmental and social development will not hamper the present corporate motto of maximizing the profits. ESG, the acronym for Environmental, Social and Governance, talks about a mechanism that integrates environmental sustainability, social responsibility and efficiency in governance into an organization’s business strategies in order to maximize the outcomes in terms of safer environment, stronger community relations and sustainable investments.
Evolution of the concept of ESG
The concept of sustainability and ESG has undergone tremendous changes over the last few decades. The early industrialization and increased use of pesticides resulted in growing concerns about environmental pollution. As a result, the modern environmental movement began in 1960s, which led to a new era of social responsibility among major industries. By 1970s, many of the corporations realized the need to address environmental/social issues along with gaining profits. The concept of sustainability gained prominence by 1980s. In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Along with the concept of ethical investments, ESG was introduced in early 2000s, whereas in 2010s we saw how sustainability was integrated into business strategies. As the incorporation of an ESG framework promised improved reputation and increased revenues, more and more investors started looking for organizations that stayed on track with sustainable business.
Three pillars of ESG
Environment, Society and the Governing body of the business are the three pillars on which we can build the ESG framework for any Company. ‘Environmental’ refers to the effects of processes/services taking place in an organization, on its natural environment i.e., air quality, water quality and atmosphere in general. ‘Social’ component refers to the impact of a company on society and community. The ‘Governance’ aspect deals with the company’s management and administration, which is usually being mistaken as the compliance obligations put forward by regulating agencies of Government.
Environmental Sustainability in business
Managing Climate change and carbon footprint is of greater concern for industries that generate and release Green House Gases (GHGs) like Carbondioxide, methane, Nitrous oxide etc. The carbon footprint represents the total amount of GHG emissions produced by an individual, organization, product or a service. Carbon Footprint management refers to the efforts to reduce the amount of GHGs generated by human activities. The CF management involves measuring, reducing and offsetting GHG emissions. These actions include adopting energy efficient practices, minimizing waste, promoting sustainable transportation and investing in Carbon Offset projects. Another major step towards achieving environmental sustainability in business is by protecting biodiversity and promoting ecosystem services. This includes sustainable land use, pollution reduction, conservation initiatives and many such practices that benefits environment in a longer run. Incorporating cleaner and efficient energy systems by implementing Green Building Codes, providing financial incentives to suppliers/clients who provides energy efficient services and raising awareness among employees and community; will also speed up the journey towards integrating environmental sustainability into business.
Building up a socially responsible business
Encouraging positive relations by engaging local communities to understand their values and requirements through CSR initiatives and partnerships will increase transparency and accountability in business. Fostering diversity, equity and inclusion among employees will develop an environment where the workers will be valued, which in turn results in increased productivity of the company’s workforce. Abiding by labour standards and Human Rights Protocols will ensure a secured working environment for the employees. Collaborating with the consumers will help you in building brand identity, making informed decisions and also fulfilling your commitments towards them. It is also important to ensure that a responsible supply-chain management is in place in order to ensure long-term sustainability in business.
Governance and sustainability
Developing a diverse and effective governing board by choosing candidates based on merits, skills, experience and ability is the first step towards achieving sustainability through diversity. A company’s executive compensation in the form of incentives shall also align with its sustainability goals. The board level action plan also includes mitigating risks and ensuring compliances through policies and procedures. Engaging the stakeholders through reports, meetings and training programs is also a management-level exercise that can ensure sustainability in governance.

Can you survive Legionnaires?
Legionnaires  disease has a deep history of being mistaken, the cause of legionnaires disease and the causative organism was unknown till late seventies.   To understand the current situation related with legionella infections in build environment, we need to understand its history. Beginning in 1976 when the American legion was celebrating its bicentennial in Philadelphia, USA where 600 veterans were staying at the Bellevue Strafford Hotel. Soon after their celebrations almost 200 of them started showing pneumonia-like symptoms. The doctors were treating them aggressively for pneumonia without any positive change I their conditions.  The infection initially shows severe lung infection, headaches, and muscle aches. Like that of pneumonia, but then it progresses to coughing up mucus and occasionally blood, chest pains, gastrointestinal symptoms, and mental changes.
It was on the 27th of July 1976 when the disease claimed its first patient and then in a weeks time the death rate had increased to 18. The numbers continued to increase to 221 infected and 34 dead by mid-August. During this time, intensive investigations were conducted in the patients’ homes and shared places of interaction. The cause was found to be the infected water supply of the hotels' Air Conditioning unit. In honor of the legionnaires who lost their lives, the disease was named legionnaires disease, and the bacterium was named Legionella.
Considering the threat potential and risk involved, exhaustive studies were conducted on the disease, identifying it as a water-borne disease.  The sources of infection included but are not limited to Hot tubs, whirlpools, hot water systems, fountains, sprinklers, drinking water, cooling towers, and air conditioning units. Over time with advancing understanding and technologies, the bacterial spread has continued to grow exponentially with conducive conditions in the build environment.
Based on the understanding of Legionella's history, transmission modes and biology, preventive strategies, investigative standards, and regulations have evolved to curtail the growing rate of infectious cases.  Some of the most stringent regulations are listed below: -
Dubai Municipality - Local order No -11 of 2003, Control of Legionella in water systems. Revision-2 (06/ 2010) Public Health Safety Department.
Water quality regulations (Forth Edition) by Regulatory and Supervisory Bureau, Government of Abu Dhabi
UK / Europe - Health & Safety Executive - ACOP L8 Control of Legionella bacteria in water systems.
European Technical Guidelines 2017: Prevention, Control, and Minimizing the risk from Legionella infections in building water systems.
European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (2011), Directive 2000/54/EC, Protection of workers from risks related to exposure to biological agents at work.
Legionella and the prevention of legionellosis. Geneva: World Health Organization.
United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) (2016). Technologies for Legionella control in premise plumbing systems.
World Health Organization (1990). Epidemiology, prevention and control of Legionellosis.
World Health Organization (2011). Guidelines for drinking-water quality.
EHS consultants base their risk assessment on the current building schematics and water usage facilities at that time. The team analyzes every aspect of the water consumption and use with the facilities, including hot water systems, irrigation systems, potable water systems, cooling towers, and fire water systems. Based on the comprehensive investigation conducted to identify the risk in water systems, we develop a mitigation plan keeping in mind the possible constraints of the system. Recommending the best, most suitable, and practical action plan, customized to the facility and its needs.
The report will include a Mitigation Plan to support the current water management team with the following aspects:
Minimizing Legionnaires’ disease risks to their employees, and visitors to the facilities.
Minimize the risk of workplace infections for legal compliance.
Ensure a plan is in place to prevent, prepare and respond to any negative deviation in water quality and in case of any Legionella infection.
Assure workplace safety by social commitment towards duty of care.
The Legionella control action plan implemented by EHS Consultants team is based on the detailed risk assessment of the water systems. The action plan is interactive with defined roles and responsibilities for the water system management team and competency enhancement with awareness trainings.  The efficacy of the mitigation plan needs to be re-assessed /validated with routine quality testing and scheduled audits.

Legionella Control - Risk Assessment and Audit
The process of Legionella risk assessment will involve a detailed study of all the water systems including but not limited to the potable water system, water storage tanks, cooling towers, swimming pools, water features, irrigation system, etc. to identify the site-specific risk. Water samples from the various identified high-risk areas will be collected for detection and enumeration of Legionella. The assessment will also include chemical analysis and bacteriological analysis of the water samples from various points to examine the vulnerability of the identified areas of concern. We strictly follow HSE’s approved code of practice L8 for control of Legionella bacteria in water systems for prevention of Legionnaires disease. DM-HSD- GU44-LCWS2 Technical guideline from Dubai Municipality and OSHAD-SF CoP 12.0 The applied code aims at prevention and control from the risk of exposure to Legionella bacteria.
Once the risk has been identified and assessed, a written scheme will be prepared for preventing or controlling it. In particular, it will contain such information about the system as is necessary to control the risk from exposure. The code of practice in the detailed risk assessment process also includes site inspections and review of drawings/system schematics to make sure that any dead legs are not left unattended.

The benefits of training in first aid at work
Until they happen, you may not realize that there are hazards at work. Accidents may occur at any time, but, who in the workplace is trained to help, if one did occur? Providing immediate attention to your employees is a legal requirement as a company. You should give employees First Aid Training for a number of reasons.
1. First aid saves lives
This may seem obvious, but it is proven. If there is a disaster in the office, are there trained people who can help? Your staff will be more confident and able to respond to incidents, injuries and illnesses during a First Aid course. Several lives have been saved thanks to quick responses to CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). Critical injury, illness, or health complications may have resulted in this being administered.
2. Reduce the number of accidents at work
Employees who take first aid training learn how to be more conscious of the safety of the workplace, which leads to fewer accidents and injuries. Reduced risks to workers and decreased workplace incidents are beneficial to everyone, but for employers it has implications within all aspects of business operations. Safety awareness improves among all employees, resulting in fewer accidents.
3. Positive work environment
By offering first aid training to employees, employers can demonstrate their commitment to providing a safe work environment. You can even use first aid training as a great team-building and morale booster in the workplace. Any company needs a high level of morale among its employees. Positive attitudes lead to positive results, and positive attitudes lead to high morale. . First aid training contributes to employee health and safety as well as improved morale and wellbeing.
4. You'll work in a safer environment
As part of employee training, many large companies provide first aid. This is a great idea because it ensures that everyone looks out for one another. When an accident occurs at work, employees may be able to prevent further harm to the victim. First aid courses in the workplace promote safer workplace practices.
5. Use first aid kits properly
Your employees will not only know exactly what should be in the first aid kit and how to maintain it, but also how to use them effectively in an emergency. Taking advantage of this knowledge will help them access it more quickly, thereby saving time and reducing their symptoms. During first aid training, trainees learn what's in their first aid kits, how to use the contents, and how to react in an emergency. This makes each employee an unofficial health and safety risk manager.
6. It can speed up recovery
Prior to further medical assistance, such as an ambulance arriving, immediate response to illness or injury can save lives as well as reduce the recovery time of a patient. That person will be back to work faster with less impact on the business if the patient is a member of staff.
7. Employees can remain safe even when they are away from the workplace
The importance of good first aid training goes beyond the workplace - if you conduct regular refresher courses, your employees will have those skills for life. Thus, they can provide effective medical treatment in an emergency to themselves, their families and friends.
8. It is an excellent team-building activity
Providing your staff with the chance to learn a skill together, one that will help them look out for one another, brings them closer together. As a result of first aid training, many teams have become more aware of the wellbeing of their co-workers.
9. During an emergency, your employees will feel more confident and have more clarity
Besides teaching patients how to administer first aid, first aid training also gives your staff the confidence to handle emergencies without fear, confusion, or overwhelm.
10. Training courses for First Aid at Work are inexpensive compared to saving a life.
