Stay together Stay together Stay together You told me this from your hospital bed once You instilled in all of us growing up I always thought it was so simple I always looked at it as an given This would be the easy part But now I realize why you emphasized Why you stressed it You knew the world that you had protected us from would come and that we would need each other so much more than before. You had always been our rock, our pillar, our safe place and safe haven. You gave us the tools and guided us. I see now it’s not as simple as it sounds. Not as easy as I thought Not a given And if I’m being honest we failed I failed to keep us together But I see everything you are Everything you taught us In us And we are working I am working to fulfill the promise that I made to you while I sat at your bedside We are coming together Even as tears stream down my face thinking of what a women we lost in you I’m hopeful Because I see you in the eyes of your kids and their kids I cry in sadness and joy Sadness in what we lost and joy in what you gave us.
