THIS IS BEAUTIFUL

I watched the show with a relative who absolutely didn’t see anything. I was so frustrated, but mostly flabbergasted about it.

Dean’s and Sam’s relationship is so “weird” that I have a hard time imagining how casual viewers see it. They see, but they do not observe.

I think that watching Supernatural and not seeing at least the covert incest is like watching the show with your eyes closed. Covert incest usually manifests by being overly sharing of sexual exploits, being unhealthy entangled, and often times enmeshment (I am going to make a separate post about enmeshment that dives deeper).

We see this in multiple episodes, with Dean sharing too much or outright exhibiting his hookups (s3e1), their inability to function without each other, the way Dean makes important decisions for Sam, and the way their differences are seen as faults.

The thesis of the show could be boiled down to the quote “Sam and Dean are psychotically, irrationally, erotically co-dependent”, which is shown time and time again. failure to recognize it shows that a lot of people are fundamentally misunderstanding both the show and Dean and Sam’s characters.

I need to talk again about how Season 6 SPN straight-up changed things for the characters and their relationship. A lot of people point to Season 8 as “when Sam and Dean started acting more overtly incesty than before”, but those seeds got planted - well, way earlier in the series, but there was a definite shift in Season 6.

Dean did in Season 6 what Sam did in Season 8. And he did it early and often and loudly.

“I wanted my brother! Alive!”

“The only reason I went to them was because you told me to!” (Lisa and Ben were in the same damn house while Dean yelled that out!)

Dean, by Season 6, has already decided the only future he’s interested in is one with Sam. He’s already rejected heteronormativity and explicitly sees his life’s plan as sticking with his brother until one of them dies.

It may seem like that’s where Dean was always at, but it wasn’t. He dreamed of domesticity in Season 2. He had a definite soft spot for Lisa and Ben starting in Season 3 that recurred for years. Much as he loved hunting and being with Sam, there was part of him in the early seasons that could consider, and even sort of want, a different life.

And then he tried it.

And he openly chose Sam.

Everyone sort of glides over it, Sam and Dean and Bobby all kind of act like it’s hunting Dean couldn’t stay away from.

“I wanted my brother!”

Lisa had the truth of it, and told him. Dean can’t be with someone romantically and be Sam’s brother at the same time. If Sam is around, Dean needs to be where Sam is.

And Sam? Sam without a soul? Kinda subtly eggs it on while acting politely respectful of their relationship. Obviously not at first - he stayed away for a whole year at first. But once he’d revealed himself to Dean? He wants Dean to come with him, comments that hunting “felt better” with him, runs him around enough that Dean apparently goes weeks without seeing Lisa and Ben… this version of Sam never even acts jealous of Lisa and Ben, because he knows full well he doesn’t need to be. He knows he’s won the minute he shows up. He stayed away for a year because he knew Dean would peace out the moment he learned Sam was alive.

Re-souled Sam? Barely registers Lisa and Ben as a blip on his radar until Lisa gets kidnapped and Dean’s preoccupied with saving her. Even then, he’s mainly concerned for Dean. The only concern he ever shows towards Lisa or Ben is after Dean has Cas wipe their memories.

The most significant romantic relationship of Dean’s life, plus a stepson. Barely registers for Sam. Because he doesn’t need to register them. He doesn’t get angry or jealous the way Dean would be later over Amelia, because they’re not significant enough for him to get jealous over. They’re not a threat and never were.

I don’t think people talk about Season 6 enough, how the brothers (souled or otherwise) saw themselves and their relationship even by that point. The immediacy with which Dean declared he would have rather had Sam, and Sam’s quiet certainty of that fact. Did they ever actually talk about it? What did they make of it?

enough about sam & dean being mistaken as a couple, I need more talk about john & dean showing up somewhere and no one at all assumes they are father & son (cause what kind of 19 year old man would be roadtripping with his father of all people) and instantly think this gruff, alcoholic drifter is hauling his boytoy around the country
