making of my ryuuko cosplay: accessories!

first up: her hand guard

i had some worker's arm guards (idk what they're called) already that i got from the general labor work supply store (i also dont know what that's called) in japan, so i didn't have to make those.

(there was a post with interesting info about what ryuus hand guard actually is, but i forgot what it said and where it was :sob: (just know it's not for kyudo at all))

i had either string that was too thin or rope that was too thick to be the finger-securing rope, so i went overboard and made one in kumihimo style lol

after sewing and wrangling the string into place, i finally got it into a wearable state!

next.. karuma holder!

i already had a belt i made for kazuma, but it wouldnt sit well under ryuuko's hakama so i had to make a new one.

this part was 70% me; my dad has all the leathercraft tools so he helped me with cutting the leather and adding rivets.

we based this loosely off designs that came up in google images lol, but it came out pretty well. i had fun dyeing and stitching.

yay!!

last is the attorney's armband. i also had one i already made for kazuma, but it didn't work with the kimono sleeves, so i had to make another one with elastic. I think it looks good tho! the sewing is pretty simple, it's kind of like making a lolita headdress.

making of my ryuuko cosplay: kimono!

i used this pattern from DRCOS! it wasn’t too hard since i’ve made a kimono before, but i wouldn’t recommend it to beginners because the instructions are a bit confusing. (i also modified it to have a shorter body and longer sleeves)

i planned out the design in procreate, then stuck it on top of a photo of the actual kimono to get the proportions right.

sketching took much longer than i thought it would lol.

now for the fun part… painting! this definitely took the longest lol. i used fabric paint medium and acrylic paint mixed in a 2:1 ratio.

finished painting! (took 3 days 🥲)

all there was left was to make a fake red lining. for the sleeves i attached the red fabric to some interfacing and sewed it on, but i had to handsew the collar so that the stitches wouldn’t show (i don’t have many photos of this since i was in a rush)
