regulus who dies long before he ever steps foot in the cave. regulus who develops feelings for james so slowly he doesn't even realize the hate has turned to love until he's coughing up flowers in his fifth year. until every breath is filled with petals and blood. and james is beautiful, and lovely, and rarely pays attention to regulus but ohhhhh when he does? when he does show reg a bit of warmth? when he takes his eyes off of lily long enough to smile at reg across the hall, or to slip a chocolate into his palm during the holidays? its those little moments that seal his coffin.

regulus who goes into the cave with vines and thorns rooted in his lungs. slowly growing over years and years until his chest is a barely breathing flower box. Theres a thousand lacerations from where the thorns have cut him up inside, and the poison from the basin seeps into every single one and burns even worse.

regulus who curls up, in pain and choking, wishing he could see james one last time. regulus who drowns on land, long before the inferni reach him, as his lungs fill with blood and poison and petals block his airway.

Most of the time, though, pain is just pain. Unlucky. Senseless. Near constant. No good thing in life came without suffering. And the few good things that do come are rarely worth it. A single smile, a drop of happiness, can hardly make up for an ocean of tears. Another lesson Regulus had learned young.

So, when six feet of muscle and messy hair crashes into him as he walks into his eight AM class, Regulus simply thinks it is nothing more than the universe’s weekly attempt to piss in his cereal.
