I am unable to play yet but I have watched several playthroughs and boy... when I tell you I was not prepared for anything Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 had to offer.

It's beautiful, it's depressing, it's hopeful, it's goofy, it will make you question your sexuality, it's french. It stars Daredevil, Shadowheart and Gollum, amongst others. You'll jam to the fucking insane bangers in the soundtrack, the music will have you ugly sobbing. It will make you question ethics and morality until you're screaming. You will laugh, you will cry, and most importantly, you can do all this with a baguette strapped to your back 🥖

You will be traumatised. Can't recommend enough 👍

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR ALL OF EXPEDITION 33! Please do not read unless you’re in act 3.

Something about the Expedition’s motto being “when one falls, we continue”, while the entire Canvas is an attempt to linger in the existence of who and what was. The way Sciel and Lune abandon their code when Alicia-Maelle brings them back, the cheerful indifference with which Sciel says she would have sacrificed Verso to bring Pierre back in his shoes, not realizing she already is. It creates such an uneasy feeling as the player, watching this story of such epic loss and sacrifice turn into a hollow attempt to regain what you’ve grieved and lost. Verso is the only character we see who seems to notice this dissonance, and we see him alternating between performing for those around him, pretending to anticipate the restoration of the Canvas as the party knew it, or his despair and exhaustion bleeding through. Everyone else is chasing a second chance, and he just wants it to be over. Such an uncomfortable feeling as the player, I simply must applaud Sandfall for that uneasy feeling.

I think it says a lot about our society that there’s a dedicated genre of romance that follows the premise of “your boss is actually a good person who cares about you and will not fire you”. Look, ye capitalist lordings and despair: heaven will not accept you, hell awaits you, and questionable smut novels will serve as steamy mirrors, showing your better selves to you like the balding Ebenezer Scrooges you are.

I first heard this song at the age of 13, sent to me by my best friend’s-then-boyfriend, and instantly burst into tears. It pumps me up and brings me down, to this day. Like taking a 30mg edible and 2 bumps of coke at the same time. No one is immune to propaganda, or that one song they heard in middle school that made them feel irrevocably seen and understood

The dichotomy of pretty/provocative Expedition 33 fanart is wild. People often put emphasis on Sciel’s musculature and waist with a loose hairstyle, while Lune wears more traditionally feminine clothing in white/silver and jewelry. Monoco is usually just…Monoco but in a suit. I always see Verso in some kind of loose and flowing unbuttoned tunic. Renoir…I fear I cannot even begin to describe the things I have seen lest they haunt me.

Gustave? Covered in blood. Every time. So much blood, all of it his. Everyone else has a rose between their teeth and is asking the Paintress to paint them like one of her Lumiere girls, and he’s just beaten to a pulp. Devastating, being a gentle brown eyed man in this economy.

Idk if this is a ship post or not, but the art is gorgeous and oh man 😭 I can only interpret this as the aftermath of Renoir and Gustave’s final fight before Renoir kills him, a gesture of sympathy. Homeboy looks so tired, imagine 1v1ing Andy Serkus right after a two phase boss fight. I have to imagine Renoir pitied him, at least somewhat.
