Have you ever heard of Taro or Yacon? I had the immense pleasure of illustrating these educational postcards for @utopianseedproject, (founded by @blueandyellowmakes). @utopianseedproject “explores a different model for our food system [much needed!] but is grounded in real hands-in-the earth research to support that vision.” They trial crops and varieties here in the Southeast to support diversity in food and farming. Today’s #MondayMaker is @starterbread, who I had the pleasure of meeting two months ago at @walnut_schoolhouse RIGHT when the world was beginning to shut down. I was really moved by this post from Matt below, so I think I’ll just leave the words to him. I HIGHLY recommend checking @starterbread out; they are hyperlocal focused and care deeply about bread, grain, and nourishing their community, and they do it well. ・・・ Why Sourdough? Our operation is named after the leavening power of sourdough starter. This is something that’s more often passed down, gifted, or traded than purchased. It’s inherently non-commercial. It doesn’t need to be produced on a grand scale, packaged and distributed on trucks. Sourdough spreads the potential to make food, whether on the home baking scale, neighborhood baker, or regional bakery. It’s wild, it’s revolutionary, and it has so many advantages over other bread making methods. There are good reasons why so many bakers (bread, pizza, pastry, donuts, etc.) have switched to sourdough. Using starter requires a longer process of fermentation and some learned intuition. Even if the resulting baked good isn’t that sour, the sourdough transforms it into more nourishing food. It breaks down the proteins in grain that can be obstructive to our digestion. Fermenting grains is as old as humans! The acidifying effect of the sourdough also acts as a natural preservative preventing staling and mold for a week or more. Today’s #MondayMaker is @sayakaganz_reclaimedcreations! I first saw Sayaka’s work at the Arboretum here in Asheville and it blew me away. Sayaka is a Japanese sculptor who grew up with the Shinto animist belief that all things have a spirit. Made from discarded plastic objects, she creates (mainly) animals in purposeful movement. When I first saw her work I didn’t even notice the common household items used, because each piece has so much life and movement you could totally miss it! But upon closer look, I recognized almost every object. In this time of quarantine, (and after!) I challenge you to take note of the things you discard. How we live is even more important than what we do, and now is a great time to take inventory of habits that were perhaps born out of convenience, rush, laziness. We all have them! Sayaka’s work is not only beautiful, intricate, colorful and full of life, it also inspires me to think deeper about not only what I discard but what I buy/consume. Whoops, a few days late but luckily in the Catholic tradition it’s still Easter season. Alleluia! Behold the Butter Lamb. The butter lamb is a traditional butter sculpture that accompanies the Easter meal for many Russian, Slovenian and Polish Catholics (or any Buffalonian). Growing up we always had a butter lamb on Easter— thanks to Malczewski’s Butter Lambs (and subsequently other knock offs) for keeping the tradition alive! After moving away I have missed this tradition— turns out if you ask for Butter Lambs in the South they have no idea what you are talking about 🙄! The butter lamb symbolizes Jesus’s sacrifice as the Lamb of God. Why butter? Because its the most ubiquitous ingredient in any meal! One year my aunt bought us a 20lb butter lamb... and needless to say we had butter for a while.
