Monster Ecologies: Rathian, Pink Rathian and Gold Rathian

Entry 7 - Rathian
Name: Rathian, Pink Rathian and Gold Rathian
Aliases: Queen of the Land, Thorn for Rathian, Cherry Blossom for Pink Rathian and Gold Fire Wyvern, Golden Moon for Gold Rathian
Classification: Reptile, Flying Wyvern
Overall Description: Rathian share the same bodystyle as most of the Flying Wyverns, and share many of their characteristics with their male counterparts Rathalos. They do have things to set them apart from each other however. Rathian have grass-like quills lining the area between their wings and also the tip of their tail. They have a large spike underneath their chins for feeding their young and, unlike Rathalos, their poison sacs are located in their tails (At the base of the tail for Old World specimens and tip of the tail for New World specimens). In rare cases, a Rathian scales will harden and turn a bright pink colour as she ages. It is unknown what causes this change, but is believed to be due to a genetic mutation similar to albinism. These Pink Rathian have since formed a breeding population of their own with Azure Rathalos, being stronger than the regular species and capable of challenging apex monsters. There also exists an even rarer variant, known as Gold Rathian. The scales of a Gold Rathian have a golden sheen and are exceptionally tough, giving her excellent defense. Her fire-producing organs have also developed, allowing the generation of extremely hot blue flames. It is unknown how this mutation occurs, but the commonly accepted reason is due to it living in close proximity to Elder Dragons such as Lunastra.
Behaviour: Like most monsters, Rathian is highly territorial, patrolling their chosen homes daily and chasing off intruders. They do have a gentle side however, as they are a caring mate and mother. Riders have even noted that their Rathians will often treat them as if they were her chick, coddling over them and bringing them food. A mated pair of Raths will stay together for life and take turns caring for the young whenever breeding season comes around. They have a particular ritual before breeding that they share with Legiana, with each species having their own particular technique. After flying as high as they can, they lock talons and free fall to the ground below. Before they crash, they both shoot fire at the ground and then separate and brake using the updraft of the flames. Raths are unique in that they will often share their territory with other Raths, even if they aren’t related. But Rathians will compete with one another to mate with a Rathalos during the breeding season. While he will mate with multiple Rathians, he will only choose the strongest one as his partner. Although usually leaving Hunters alone if not provoked, Rathian are famous for how persistent they are about egg thieves. They lay very large clutches of them, many of which will be stolen, but only those at the very bottom are actually cultivated. This ensures that even with all the stolen eggs, the offspring will survive. Rathians will still pursue egg thieves anyway, as leftover eggs can be used as a food source for the hatchlings and to stop the thief from trying it again.
Habitat: Rathian are strange in that they primarily inhabit the Ancient Forest, and only live in the Wildspire Waste after losing the breeding competitions. Pink Rathian instead swap the Ancient Forest for the Coral Highlands, but due to the increased number of egg thieves like Shamos, they will only lay their eggs in the Wildspire Waste. Golden Rathain tend to live in areas near Elder Dragons, so they can be found in both the Elders Recess and certain areas of the Guiding Lands.
Diet: Rathian are excellent predators, feeding on a large variety of prey from multiple habitats. In the Ancient Forest and Wildspire Waste, she feeds on Aptonoth and Apceros, Kestodon and Kelbi, and will occasionally feed on Gajau. In time of starvation, that have even been known to feed on their own uncultivated eggs. The Pink Rathian that inhabit the Coral Highlands will feed on different prey like the Shamos, Meduso, Mantragells and Raphinos that live there. Gold Rathian in the Elders Recess feed on Gastodon and Barnos, but those that live in the Guiding Lands have a much wider variety of prey.
Attack Method: Rathian primarily fight on the ground, attacking with bites, charges, kicks and tail whips. They have two methods of using their fire: three fireball shots or a close range flame burst. Their most well known attack is their tail flip. From either a starting jump or in midair, a Rathian will perform a backflip, aiming to poison opponents with their tail. As a Pink Rathian, her venom will become stronger, her tail scales will become tougher and her flips will become more acrobatic, sometimes known as the “Dancing Rose” or “Flippity Flappity Poison Box of Death”. Gold Rathian fight in much the same way as the other Rathian species, but are even more agile and can perform complex aerial maneuvers to catch opponents off guard.
Place in the Food Chain: Rathian are very high in the Food Chain, maintaining a position above many monsters such as Anjanath and Jyuratodus. Only 3 monsters in the New World that aren’t an Elder Dragon level threat able to challenge them, being Diablos, Legiana, and Odogaron, the apex monsters of their respective habitats. While they lose most of the time while fighting a Diablos, battles against Legiana and Odogaron can go either way. While they are attacked by Bazelguese and sometimes killed by Deviljho if they don’t run away, this is not for feeding or territorial purposes, but instead a show of dominance spurred on by the extreme aggression of these creatures. Gold Rathian are considered to be at similar strength to many Elder Dragons and so the only threats to them are Elder Dragons themselves or similarly powerful monsters.
This has been a report on Rathian, Pink Rathian and Gold Rathian. Thank you for reading
