I’m only on the second episode of season 4 and Merthur is already revving up to kill me. I love the entire “farewell” scene when Arthur sends Merlin back to Camelot for obvious reasons: Merlin is half-dead and begging Arthur to let him stay by his side, Arthur is concentrated on getting him back to safety and doesn’t take his eyes off him:

I love this moment so much because Arthur is doing his best to be stoic, to show as little concern as possible because as he said in season 2: 

but for one second when he clenches his jaw and sort of inhales, he’s about to break, his emotion is about to overwhelm him and he’s trying to hold it together but Merlin keeps asking to stay by his side, to just be with him and it’s making it hard for him to concentrate on being emotionless so he just ends up bickering with Merlin because he’s worried and upset and scared and can’t Merlin just do what he’s told and get better??

and it’s just so sweet, which is why, like I get the focus on Merlin being so devoted to Arthur and being soft with Arthur and just having this intense affection for Arthur but so is Arthur with Merlin 

he literally cannot fathom a life without him, he even dreams about him, like Merlin

and what I love about that is that it’s not in a servant capacity no matter what he says, like he berates Merlin and throws things at Merlin and does make Merlin serve but he expects Merlin to respond like a comrade and not a servant? When Merlin is quiet and compliant and takes the insults without insulting back, Arthur automatically knows something is wrong

and demands he tell him what it is under the pretense of being annoyed when he’s actually just concerned

literally what soulmates are made of.

*deep inhale* it’s the way you can watch the emotional equivalent of Arthur getting punched in the gut when he finds out about Merlin’s magic. It’s the way you watch him grasp at straws “You aren’t a sorcerer, I would know”, “This is stupid why are you saying this” not because he fears magic anymore - he commends the sorcerer for winning the battle seconds before - but because it makes sense and if it’s true, it means the one person he thought would never betray him has. It means the canon one person he truly trusts never trusted him back. And you just watch his heart break. 

It’s the way you know Arthur would’ve screamed at Merlin, fought him, demanded to see the full extent of his magic if he was healthy, but he’s dying and like it or not his life is in Merlin’s hands. It’s not about the magic, not at this point, it’s about the lying.

It’s the way Arthur makes the same punched-in-the-gut face when he watches Morgana announce that she’s his sister, when he sees Agravaine fighting alongside Morgana, when he finds Gwen and Lancelot. And Merlin, the one person who has stood by him for all of this, was lying too.

It’s the way when Arthur says “You’ve lied to me all this time.” it’s not only a revelation about Merlin but a revelation about himself. The realization that his victories were not his own. The knowledge that everything he prides himself on, everything he has done for his kingdom, was more Merlin’s accomplishment than his. Arthur already has crippling self-doubt, and to realize he has just been a pawn in everyone’s long-winded game including that of his very best friend is destroying him mentally and you watch every time it hits him that he has done nothing (he thinks) without the interference of another to ensure his victory. He’s being used as a pretty face to front the movements of everyone around him because he has always been more the King of Camelot than Arthur Pendragon.

It’s the “I trusted you” “I’m sorry” “I’m sorry too” and the way that Arthur blames himself for Merlin never trusting him. It’s the way “why are you doing this?” isn’t just about Merlin behaving like a servant but asking Merlin why he’d fight so hard to save the life of someone he never trusted.

It’s the way “I want you to always be you” is Arthur giving Merlin the vocal affirmation of trust that he thought was implicit all these years that Merlin never understood. It’s the vocal acceptance that friendly bullying never let on. It’s the “You may have lied to me but I still trust you with my life” that Merlin needs to hear.

It’s the way “thank you” and Bradley’s mouthed “I love you” are Arthur’s final ways to trying to show Merlin that he truly did care about Merlin in their time together and that while the way he was raised forbid him from showing affection, he did what he could in the ways he knew how.

It’s the way they could’ve done so much more, been so much happier, if they had just confided in each other, rather than be convinced that they had to do everything alone like the depressed bastards they are.

It’s the tragedy of Arthur Pendragon for me chief.

I have a theory that while Merlin represents fate and destiny, Arthur may represent free will. Throughout the show, we see Arthur make choices based on what he thinks is right, and deals with the consequences. Even when he makes mistakes, he repents and learns from them, and is ultimately spared. Despite human frailty, Arthur ends up with everything he wants: he got to marry the woman he loves who was a servant, establish the knights of the round table and knighting commoners, creating a fair and just kingdom who values its citizens. He, himself, inspires loyalty from even the most cynical of people.

In the third season, the show refers to Arthur and Merlin as ‘courage’ and ‘magic,’ meaning that they both symbolize and embody these things. But while Merlin is the embodiment of magic, he is also the embodiment of fate. Just like he cannot run from his magic, he cannot run from fate - no matter how hard he tries. Arthur is the embodiment of courage - it takes immense courage to make the decision you believe to be right, without knowledge of how it will turn out, and taking the responsibility of the result. It is easy to follow, to let others and destiny tell you what to do. But it is the greatest courage to have a will of your own.

This is the difference between Arthur and Merlin. Merlin is controlled by his destiny, almost enslaved by it, as if the very knowledge of his destiny is his doom. Every decision he makes, no matter the cost, is to ensure Arthur’s continual survival - by forsaking everything he knows, believes, and is. Because Merlin is so afraid of Arthur’s destiny coming to pass, he tries everything he can to prevent it, unknowingly becoming the catalyst that confirms and sets the path of events to unfold that ultimately leads to the dreaded outcome. No matter what Merlin does - because he is Destiny itself - he cannot change the future. He is doomed with this knowledge and responsibility, so much that he becomes the one that causes it. 

This is the great tragedy.

Girl I just wanna say it makes me so happy to see that new people are still finding this show even though it ended years ago.
