So will i be publicly shamed?
Recently, I flicked though my first posts on this blog: i was a moody teenager seeking social acceptance and comfort in the thought of love so obviously i wrote emotional and embarrassing things. Of course i thought that i would have find these things pathetic at some stage in the future but in that moment it felt the appropriate expression of that exact moment and mostly, i was doing that online so nobody that i had to face everyday would have read it anyway. Then, my online self and real-life-self merged because i moved closer to my online friends to go to college.
Five years later, i am utterly afraid of expressing myself online and sometimes, like in this exact moment, i have to force myself into it. It feels awkward like getting back with a boyfriend who broke up with you because you weren’t pretty enough.
But you know what? it’s not me, it’s you World Wide Web! I blame you! You’ve changed. ... well it’s not even you... actually it’s all these people that are invading “our” space!
let me explain. I was born before tablets and smartphones became an extension of our body therefore i know what it means going out-on holiday-everywhere without being reachable whenever, wherever (this is a quote to prove i am actually old). I remember life without Facebook and when it was uncool to spend your spare time using a computer. I’ve seen the internet turning from “a place for friends” to a place full of haters and members of your family who don’t understand da impORTANCe ov writin appropriately. Jon Ronson, the author from whom i stole my title for this post, wrote a great book about online shaming that stated all my biggest fears. So you’ve been publicly shamed is a collection of stories of people who got shamed online, mostly on twitter where with an hashtag you can start talking to the world, not just people that might have wanted to be your friend or at least requested to be. Jon is amazing in summarizing these stories and stating the facts but still i didn’t find a solution for my problems.
should we stop expressing ourselves online and go back to paper diaries and friends who’s only account is a bank one?
Should we educate the mass on what is appropriate to say and what is not? wouldn’t that be considered censorship? and, most of all, is it possible or just even correct to do so?

do i dress like a child?
I was ironing earlier on this morning when i started thinking about the dress i wore at my graduation in 2010. I had my grandmother making it for me and i picked up buttons and fabric myself. It was exactly how i wanted it to be and to this day, it still is one of my favorite dresses.
And yet, 5 years and 1 month and 4 days later i realized it looks like a children’s kindergarten uniform. Let’s not mention the shoes that i matched it with. I am just going to say that the only thing they were missing were straps.
Was that my unconscious way to say goodbye to the school by transforming my first outfit into the grown up version of it?
i’d like to think so. Or maybe it was just a casualty and, as usual, i am overthinking this.

I am not going to open a new blog.
What possible reason could I have to do so? I don’t want to fill the internet with some more meaningless informations about my human condition. I want the internet to be...well i don’t know what i would like it to be actually.
Oh, i know i would love it to be as it was before all these crappy smartphones came along. yes, i do owe one. no, i do not die if i have no wifi or my battery dies. i got detoxed long long time ago and so should you and life is better without it.
sorry for my digression,
as i was saying, i am not going to open a new blog i am just gonna start use my old ( partly mostly embarrassing) one.

Have you met Oliver Jeffers? One of our earliest CreativeMornings speakers, he’s quite a character. Hailing from Northern Ireland, Oliver is a picture book maker. His tale is a fascinating one, and is captured in this very lovely short video.
"I’m really lucky. I get to do what I love for a living. I feel a sense of responsibility to enjoy that as much as I can."
