Well...they died again
i sure did!
like, listen, okay? i get it. its annoying when you want to read something and you send in an ask but it never comes back out. ive been there. i hate it too!
but!
1. im doing this for fun. i dont have to do this. i could delete the whole blog if i wanted to and forget about it forever. im not even getting paid. the only thing i get in return for sending out asks is validation and response from people reading it and now it seems to be mostly bitter which again! i understand! im not bashing you! your feelings are completely valid ... but;
2. rl takes precedence every single time. a couple of weeks ago we found out my sister has cancer. when she's doing chemo i have to take care of my niece and it's exhausting because she's 3½yo and has no idea why mom has no hair and is always tired. im also trying to care for my sister without making her feel like a child. my depression is also popping back in from time to time and im trying to learn how to deal with it while also suspecting i might have adhd and how to deal with that. im studying and was meant to have an internship but never got it thanks to the place being supershit with communication and also covid which makes me feel worthless and unsure of my future since if you get an internship you can usually get a job right after the studies end. no internship = no job.
i absolutely 100% do not blame you or resent messages like this but yall gotta understand that this is just for fun and for when i have time/energy to do it. im not looking for pity and tbh i dont really want people to respond to this because its okay! life happens. ill deal with it as it comes but this blog is unfortunately not a priority. im sorry.

Dude this is kinda crazy but Companions react to you hatching dragon eggs
Cait warns Sole that the second that thing bares its teeth at her she’ll have its head on a plate. Does not trust it at all, how the fuck does something that big fly?
Codsworth is friendly with all animals but gets pretty tired of putting out fires around them. Tries to housebreak it or at least make sure that happens somewhere where he doesn’t have to deal with it.
Curie absolutely in love with it, thinks it’s the most incredible thing she’s ever seen. They shouldn’t be possible! But there it is! Probably ends up taking care and loving it more than Sole.
Danse just can’t believe it. Why would they do that? Why would they bring another monster, another abomination, to the world? He’s not mad. He’s just dissapointed.
Deacon is a self-proclaimed expert on dragons and gives either tips on how to care for it that are so obvious and vague as possible, such as “gotta feed it! to make sure it grows”, or such outlandish facts about dragons that cannot be proven like if the dragon tailswipes a behemoth super mutant it’ll rain diamonds. Never steps a foot close to the thing though.
Dogmeat is a little jealous of Soles new friend that seems to get everyones attention. Will sulk until he gets treats and pets.
Hancock is wary but thinks it’s a cool little fucker. It seems friendly enough, although obviously dangerous, but people have said the same about him. Is extremely careful, takes Soles lead.
MacCready keeps a nice 10 feet away at all times. Don’t even try to get it close to him. There’s a forcefield around it that’s pushing him back. Stares at Sole but doesn’t say anything. His eyes says everything. “Why?”
Nick is concerned about everyone else. Sole can handle it, naturally. Sole found it and it’s Soles responsibility but that thing is going to grow until it’s everyones problem. Suggests making a pen for it off to the side where it has its own space and people don’t have to worry about getting flambéed.
Piper knows animals can smell fear but there’s just no way to be calm around it. Tries to be cool and pet it but shakes the whole time. Wishes Sole wasn’t such an animal friend.
Preston doesn’t understand how something that was so small (relatively) can grow to be so big. Where did it get the food? Does a body-count twice a day just to be sure. It makes Sole happy though. If people start complaining they’ll have to scooch off to the side though. But won’t banish either one of them.
Strong wants to fight it. Gets upset when told no, gets angry when people say he wouldn’t win that fight. Luckily the dragon doesn’t want to fight and thinks Strong just wants to play.
X6-88, like Danse, asks why. Certainly it’s a tactical advantage to have a giant flying lizard breathing fire on your enemies but it’s also a giant beacon to their location, and a challenge to all the idiot raiders out there trying to prove themselves. Nevertheless, it’s Soles pet and as such will be protected and cared for.
Ada, like Dogmeat, is a little jealous. Not that it’s getting all the attention, but that it’s so much cooler than she is. She doesn’t have claws, she can’t breathe fire. Looks up information to see if she can maybe upgrade herself to be cooler.
Longfellow has seen some shit in his days but this is some shit. Has no idea how to act around it but isn’t necessarily scared. Talks to it like an adult human. Would 100% sit on its back when it’s flying though. #YOLO
Gage reacts much like Cait but has a deeper respect for it than her. This is how they’ll never be defeated again. They can conquer the entire wasteland if they want to, if only Sole would stop talking to it in a baby voice and cuddling it like it was a dog.

Companions react to a sole that has a metric fuck ton of health problems and has to take a ton of medicine just to make sure they don’t fall apart but because it is the postapocalypse they have to raid old hospitals and pharmacies for ingredients and medicine or (if sole is desperate) just robbing people of medicine so they don’t die
Cait thinks it’s not much different from what they do otherwise so she doesn’t care a whole lot. Is concerned about when they can’t find more, isn’t too bothered about robbing people, it’s about surviving. But that’ll run out soon too. Enjoys living in the moment though. Even if Sole needs medication to survive doesn’t mean something else wont kill them. It’s all about the now.
Codsworth doesn’t like that Sole is taking from other people but he also wants Sole to survive. Goes out of his way to find supplies for them so they don’t have to become criminals to feel healthy. Does everything to make things easier for Sole too. Would carry them if he could, makes sure they eat regularly and hydrate, always things they like, and suggests taking a rest before they can feel it themselves.
Curie knows that objectively robbing is bad but the morally grey area between needing it desperately to survive makes her super confused. Actually comes up with natural remedies so Sole doesn’t have to worry. In a way she studies Sole through their travels, makes notes about how they’re affected, in which situations and what they do to fix it. Comes up with cures and alternative fixes when she figures something out.
Danse thinks it’s wrong to steal but makes a note to make it up for the people when he can. Sole doesn’t have much of a choice and he understands their plight but also thinks that they’re in a situation where they can’t make a good call. Suggests that they stay onboard the prydwen so they don’t jeopardize their team with their poor health. Sole has much to offer but it doesn’t have to be on the battlefield.
Deacon tries to find ways to help them without hurting other people. Turns his back to it when they run out of time and supplies. God knows Deacon has fucked up in the past, they’ll just have to make up for it later. However long it takes. Tries to cheer them up a lot, take their mind off the stress of not having enough and knowing it’s not getting better without help that barely exists anymore. Goes through his channels to find something else that can help.
Dogmeat just wants Sole to be happy and healthy. No matter what.
Hancock will not stand for Sole taking from others, even for their own survival. Wants to help them however he can, he knows enough about chems for him to possibly make a cocktail to at least alleviate symptoms, but there’s no way he’s okay with Sole stealing from others who also need it to survive. Sole doesn’t get to decide their life is more important. Takes it at their pace, there’s no need to rush anything. It’s not like he’s their nurse or anything but he knows enough about feeling like shit and wanting a fix to alleviate it when there’s no chems around.
MacCready is all for stealing. It’s all about surviving. Doesn’t like that they’re putting other people at risk but Sole needs it too. And Sole is busting butts trying to make a difference in the world. It sucks but it is what it is. He’s concerned about eventually running out completely and how Sole’s health will develop into but like Cait he knows you can die from anything at anytime.
Nick is disappointed but understands the difficult situation they’re in. Like Codsworth he makes an effort to make sure it doesn’t come to stealing. Does what he can to ease their symptoms. Takes the lead in most situations, not in a this-is-not-up-to-you-kind of way, still follows Soles directions, but protects them.
Piper isn’t okay with stealing. It’s a hard and difficult situation but it doesn’t give Sole the right to take a chance of survival from someone else. Would’ve been a great detective though because she knows exactly who to ask and what to say in order to get other options. Makes sure there’s always something in her back pocket just in case Sole needs it.
Preston absolutely will not stand for Sole stealing critical medicine from other people. Makes it clear the second the realization crosses his mind. Promises to find other ways. Surely some form of the medicine is still being produced, and they’ll just have to get it there. Does whatever he can to support them, he owes it to them. Will literally carry them on his back when they become too fatigued, feeds them even if they say they’re not hungry. Does back off when it’s called for. Knows what it’s like and sometimes you need someone to push and sometimes you need to be left alone.
Strong doesn’t give a hoot about stealing. It’s not a word in his vocabulary. Doesn’t completely understand why they’re taking a bunch of stuff, assumes they’re chems for fun or battle prowess. As long as Sole goes forward, he follows.
X6-88 thinks the meds are coming to better use with Sole and doesn’t mind taking it from someone else. Suggests visiting the Institute doctors for a possibility of eliminating what ails them. Does whatever they ask of him otherwise, of course. Eventually takes initiative and helps them before it becomes apparent that they need help.
Ada knows stealing is bad but what is Sole supposed to do? Just suffer? Usually leaves something else in place, things she thinks are equally useful. Doesn’t know what Sole needs but does whatever she’s asked to. Tells them stories to get their mind off of the struggles.
Longfellow understands the struggle with failing health but his came with age and Sole is too young to be dealing with it. Doesn’t approve of stealing but won’t berate them for it, when you’re in pain you can do desperate things. Does his best to comfort them, doesn’t know how else to help. Probably doesn’t entirely understand what the issues are but can see the struggle and that’s enough for him.
Gage is fine with stealing. Survival of the fittest and all that. Maybe Sole isn’t actually the fittest but it’s the thought of it. He switches between being impressed and being annoyed at Soles health. Impressed because they’ve achieved so much despite having the cards stacked against them, annoyed because he knows they’re strong and hates seeing them weak. Steps in when he’s necessary but prefers letting Sole ‘overcome’ their enemies, thinks it’ll make them stronger.

He/she/they is back!!! Can you please do romanced companions (who at this point have been with sole for multiple years maybe 3) react to sole casually referring to them as their husband/wife
I demand fluff!!!
Cait has a mini-freakout but keeps it cool. It’s just a knee-jerk reaction at this point, she knows it and Sole knows it. Doesn’t mention it in case Sole was just joking around but when it happens again she makes a joke that if Sole’s gonna give her a title, they better get it in paper.
Curie loses all and any interest in whatever conversation was already happening. Immediately snaps her neck around and stares at Sole with big eyes until they react and ask what’s up. She makes some mental gymnastics that end up at the conclusion that Sole was proposing and she blurts out “Yes!” and kisses them.
Danse tries to keep his cool but simply cannot. Blushes and slowly starts smiling wider and wider. Probably scares off whoever Sole was talking to and when Sole asks what’s up he very sheepishly says nothing. Doesn’t expect a serious commitment like that but it sounded right to him.
Hancock isn’t exactly the guy to commit like that to a person the way they already have so marriage has definitely crossed his mind a few times. If he’s already going in, might as well go all in, y’know? Has chickened out before because of selfdoubt and all that. Plays it totally cool and doesn’t react but starts planning a real proposal.
MacCready has already referred to Sole as his spouse by accident, will absolutely pay back for all the times they teased him about it. Eventually leads to a conversation where they both agree that they’re both ready for a proper marriage.
Piper starts coughing on air, absolutely red in the face. Has thought about marriage but figured Sole wasn’t ready. If Sole catches themselves they’ll have a conversation about it but if Sole moves on clueless she’ll consider if maybe she could do the proposing. A slip like that doesn’t come from nowhere, right?
Preston doesn’t want to embarrass Sole in front of their company but cannot stop thinking about it. Eventually has to bring it up, wants to know if it’s something they’re thinking about and if it's something maybe they can put into action. The Commonwealth ends up with a second summer because he won't stop beaming.
Gage is very casual about it, thinks they're practically married already just without the partying that officiates it. Surprises himself how not-freaking-out about it he is. Doesn't bring it up though, thinks that if Sole wants marriage they can start the conversation themselves but he does kinda enjoy how it sounded.

At what point did the romanced companions fully accepted the rule of mother/father to Shaun
Cait has a really difficult time accepting it. Probably takes a few years before she can finally be at peace with being called mom and having it as a role. Obv. had a lot of trauma from her childhood and what family has been for her, has to work through a lot to get to where she’s okay and content with being called a mom and acting the role.
Curie doesn’t entirely know what a mother is supposed to be and/or act like but she’s ready right away. Doesn’t exactly take charge and decide things for Shaun but she pays attention to Sole and what they think and she tries to mirror them.
Danse didn’t think Shaun would care to have him as a parental figure at first but once Shaun calls him dad it only takes a few days before Danse is 100% Danse the Dad. Has a little difficulty going from raising a soldier to raising a son, however. But he figures it out with Sole.
Hancock needs a few months to figure out and accept that, shit, he is actually a dad now. He’s not comfortable at first because parents have responsibilities and Hancock enjoys fucking around and doing whatever but the kid asks interesting questions that they both enjoy trying to answer. Since Sole is the Parent with capital P he grows comfortable in the role. He’s very much the fun dad and Sole is the one who sets the rules.
MacCready only needs a day or so to accept it, he’s already a dad to Duncan. Has an understanding with Sole however that even though they both raise their sons together, MacCready is Duncans primary parent and Sole is Shauns primary parent.
Piper has days where she still doubts her ability to be a mom, despite having raised Nat herself already. Internally fully accepts her role a few weeks after meeting Shaun but was technically ready once Sole and her started dating. Wouldn’t have started the relationship if she wasn’t.
Preston is a (good) dad to everyone he meets already but to accept that he is directly the dad to Shaun takes a while to digest. Knew Sole had a son but assumed that he wouldn’t himself be good enough to be considered family. Accepts it a month or so after being reassured and proven to be a beloved family member.
Gage subconsciously accepts it a lot earlier than he does consciously. Doesn’t really want the part because he’s a Big Bad Raider and raiders don’t raise kids the right way but there’s still a part of him that wants to give a kid the life he didn’t get himself. Fully accepts it after half a year of fighting his instincts.

Romanced Companions react to shaun calling them mom/dad
Cait ignores it. Didn’t hear it so didn’t happen and thus means nothing. Absolutely refuses to acknowledge it. Has a hard enough time picturing herself in a family situation, being called mom is just too much. At least for now. Had it been before a relationship with Sole and before everything they’ve gone through together she would’ve snapped at the kid and told them never to call them that. Understands now that this is a situation she’s in willingly and that she can’t take out her own reaction to trauma on a child but doesn’t make it any easier to swallow.
Curie tears up in the moment but full on sobs when she tells Sole what happened. She’s absolutely thrilled beyond comprehension to be considered Soles partner but to be considered family? Priceless. It’s a moment she relives frequently when she wants something good to think about.
Danse smiles and ruffles Shauns hair. Absolutely cries about it in private. Danse isn’t a stranger to acting as a rolemodel as a senior ranking Brotherhood soldier but this is intimate. It’s personal. He feels he’s succeeded as a person to have that high of an honor to be considered a dad.
Hancock isn’t sure how to react about it. Never planned on being a dad but also isn’t a title he’d reject. Understands that when you date a person with a kid you become an extra-parent of sorts (though Sole will still always have the final say) and while he isn’t a parent-type-of-guy, he’s always been kind and accepting to any and everyone. As long as Sole is there to steer the ship, he’s more than happy to be considered family.
MacCready has a world of emotions surging through him when he hears it. On one hand he’s elated that Shaun likes him enough to consider him a dad but on the other hand he feels bad for Soles spouse, the other parent. Imagines what he’d feel like if he’d died and Duncan started calling someone else dad. Makes sure Sole takes time to talk about their spouse so that Shaun knows that while MacCready loves to be his dad, there was another person who used to love Shaun just as much.
Piper tears up in the moment and hugs Shaun. Immediately accepts the role, would do anything for him. Makes sure he calls her that because he wants to though, and not because he might feel expected to. Had ideas before she met Sole that maybe one day she could have a family of their own but mostly shut those down in consideration of the state of the world but after Sole it’s definitely something that’s on her mind.
Preston thinks it might be an accident at first, people have called him dad by mistake before. Once he realizes it wasn’t an accident he absolutely beams with pride and joy. He almost feels like a balloon that’s about to drift off into the sky.
Gage lets it slide the first time to try and figure out what he thinks about it. Eventually sits the kid down and explains that he’s not really a dad-person even if he will of course be there for the kid, to make sure he’s safe and all that. Wants Shaun to understand that he can call Gage whatever he wants, but Gage isn’t a good enough dad. Maybe a fun uncle or something. He does, however, grow into it. Realizes that being a dad isn’t what he was raised to think a dad is, that he can change the definition to be what he wants to be. Eventually takes pride in it.

I'm replaying fallout 4 again and it's so funny to me that twice in a row if Sole mentions their shitty past, the first thing Preston says both times is "Damn". He's so cute!! I appreciate his character so much more after excitedly reading through pretty much this entire blog. Your writing is incredible and the way you've developed the companions makes my heart sing~!
Thank you! He’s very relatable tbh and I’m a little miffed how easily people ignore his character and personality.
Preston has been through a ton of crap (I mean who hasn’t, but Preston especially) and he knows how easy it is to break down. He is so impressed and proud of the Sole Survivor for how relentless they are about making things right with the world.
Preston would also be super proud of you for sending sweet messages like this :Dc Not everyone can literally save the world but small things count! Small things build up to bigger things! Small and kind gestures is what keeps the world good and he’d be happy someone like you exist.

Could you spare some Romanced Longfellow hcs? He's my second favorite
As you wish!
-If Sole is closer in age he’ll act as if they’ve always known each other, pretends the pre-war world is just a weird neighborhood instead of a different time entirely. If it’s because he can’t exactly phantom someone being 200 years old and needs to make up an excuse or if it’s because he’s just that comfortable with Sole, it’s hard to say.
-If Sole is significantly younger he feels guilty about “stealing their best years” but he feels guilty of plenty of things so it doesn’t bother him that much. He thinks he’ll probably kick the bucket much sooner than them and they can go nuts after he’s gone, while he’s here he wants the time he can get.
-Almost immediately skips the newly-in-love-phase and goes straight into we’ve-been-happily-married-for-decades. He’s not shy about how and who he is and doesn’t think Sole has a reason to be either. The relationship feels very comfortable and safe from the start.
-Isn’t much for holding hands or kissing in public but loves being close anyway. Frequently wraps his arm around Soles shoulder or waist, especially when they’re in a bar telling stories (Sole is mostly listening) of their adventures. Always exaggerates the adventures but does so in a way that they’re entertaining and also still kinda believable.
-Feels he’s too old for kids but wouldn’t mind getting married. It’s entirely up to Sole though. As long as they’re together it’s the same thing. But maybe would be nice to have a party about it.

Companions react to the Sole Survivor finding Shaun's Halloween costume in their old home after blowing up the Institute. I'd love to see what you can do with it
Cait doesn’t entirely get it as she doesn’t really have the familial love reference in her soul. She knows Sole is hurting though, and that’s all she needs to be there for them. Suggests throwing it away to throw away the pain, leave the past behind.
Codsworth hurts just as much as Sole does. If he could cry he would be sobbing right next to them, offering them tea and blankets. He’s the one who suggested the costume. They’ll get through it together.
Curie is so confused and emotional. Knows that she didn’t lose anyone but can’t explain why she also feels so desperately sad. Doesn’t know how to grieve properly either or how to comfort Sole. Makes her feel even worse. Knows better than to ask about the Halloween holiday and significance of the costume.
Danse understands the pain of losing but hates dwelling on the past. Encourages Sole to move on quickly, and to look ahead. Suggests ripping a piece of the costume to keep with them as memento, to remind them what they’re fighting for.
Deacon is surprisingly quiet. Doesn’t joke around (even he has limits) but doesn’t say much at all. Does small things that are easily unnoticed though, like make sure Sole always has something to eat or drink, and that when they rest they are undisturbed. Makes a mental note never to remind them of that particular costume, preferably never mentions Halloween, costumes or dressing up. Finds other words to use that aren’t as linked.
Dogmeat doesn’t know who the costume belongs to or what it means but knows that holding it is making Sole sad. He never leaves their side and always sits or lies next to them whenever possible. One day when Sole hasn’t touched it for a while he grabs it and runs away with it, burying it somewhere out in the wasteland Sole won’t find it again, thinking he’s taking away what’s hurting Sole.
Hancock knows all about burying grief under chems and alcohol but also knows they’re only temporary fixes and delays the inevitable. Makes sure Sole has the option if things get too hard but encourages them to work through it sober. Ignoring pain only makes it fester. Stands by them every step of the way. Suggests burying the costume since they couldn’t bury Shaun.
MacCready really wants to be there for Sole as much as he can but it reminds him too much of his own son and his terror of losing him. Will help Sole recover the best he can but he can’t talk about Shaun specifically without severe anxiety himself. Gives them space to grieve when they need vent but is right there to pick them back up when they’re done. The costume instantly makes him freak out, doesn’t want to be near it.
Nick isn’t great with comforting people, it was the worst part of his job. Only knows the clichés of “there, there” and “I’m sorry for your loss”. He’s matured beyond grieving the way Sole does and can only really promise to give them whatever help they request. If they need to sob into his shoulder he lets them, if they want distractions he got cases in abundance and if they want to talk he will listen. Suggests giving the costume away to some settler so that they don’t have to be reminded of it.
Piper feels worthless. Knows that realistically she can’t undo what’s been done or how Sole feels about it but she feels like she’s not doing enough. Probably goes overboard with comfort and maybe doesn’t leave Sole alone enough. Does the best she can not to put herself and Nat in that scenario, just the idea of the idea makes her stomach turn. Considers taking the costume and throwing it away so Sole isn’t reminded but knows it’s not for her to do.
Preston gives them all the time and space they need. Does whatever they ask him to and makes sure no one gives them a hard time. Knows that there’s nothing he can say or do to make it easier, it’s something they’re going to have to process over a long time. Promises that it will get better. Suggests putting the costume away for now but keeping it, one day it won’t be a bad memory anymore.
Strong doesn’t understand the purpose of the costume or why it makes Sole sad. Tells them to get rid of it if it’s hurting them, no reason to keep something that makes them weak around. Doesn’t help when people try to explain, just makes him more confused and angry about it.
X6-88 already has too many conflicting emotions he doesn’t understand about the fall of the Institute, has things of his own to process. Stands by their side and does whatever he can to help but is almost just as much of a mess as Sole is, just internalizes it better. Ends up feeling kind of resentful towards the costume for many reasons, encourages Sole to get rid of it.
Ada has costumes of her own in her luggage. Tells Sole not to let go of it and if she sees any reason Sole might try to destroy it she’ll swipe it before anything happens and keep it safe for them. One day it wont hurt as much and they’ll want something to help them remember.
Longfellow offers to take the costume off their hands so they don’t have to think about it anymore. Will put it away in case they ever want it back but if it rots away in a box somewhere it’ll be just as well. Talks happy memories with them, tries to turn it into something good.
Gage slightly resents Sole for getting so emotional over some cloth. Thinks it anchors them in the past instead of letting them live in the present. Considers destroying it, either in secret or in front of them, but understands that it’s more than just the costume. Attempts to keep them busy so they can’t dwell on it but when it’s at its worst he’s either staying away or silently letting them cry it out on his shoulders.

With the release of “The outer worlds” I have a feeling that Fallout is about to die
I’m inclined to disagree simply because Fallout is so vast and expansive, it already has several releases under it’s belt and the world keeps growing esp. since the playerbase is literally invited/required to engage in order to appreciate the game. Such as Bethesdas “approval” of mods (to fix shit they can’t be bothered with). It’s like it’s multiplying with itself.
While The Outer Worlds was/is a great game, and I can def. see more installations in the future expanding on it, it was maybe too perfect in comparison? The characters were well developed, the story was written out and followed, we weren’t really left wanting/needing more. The game provided and delivered what we expected and requested while fallout keeps dangling more infront of you while starving you at the same time.
Fallout is so incomplete that we as players want to fill in the holes because the world is so cool and complex and bethesda, either deliberately or incompetently, withholds or disregards key elements so that the player is given the opportunity, and in turn the responsibility, to fill in the blanks. Even if the next fallout game totally bombs just the sheer novelty of it being FalloutTM will carry it some more.

Fallout 4 companions (+Rhys, Haylen, Sturges, the faction leaders, and the nuka-gang leaders) react to Sole riding in on a horse, and ordering them not to go near it, and when/if the companions disregard this order (maybe they only met Sole just recently and haven’t learned that Sole only gives orders for the sake of other people’s safety), they end up getting kicked/bitten/crushed between the horse’s butt and a wall, and Sole informs them that this is exactly why they told them to stay back?
Cait reacts just as quickly as the horse and quickly jumps back before its hooves connect. She still falls backwards and yells. Gets huffy with Sole and thinks they should’ve told her it was an aggressive animal that attacks just by being approached.
Codsworth raises one of his arms and shouts “Why, you!” at the horse, quickly hurrying off to find a mirror of some kind so he can see if his chassi got dented. Apologizes to Sole for not listening to them but hates the horse.
Curie is completely dazed and in shock, staying on the ground for a moment to collect herself. Thinks the horse is magnificent and patiently asks Sole for instructions on how to properly conduct herself around it.
Danse is 100% embarrassed and hopes no one but Sole saw it and that Sole has the good heart never to mention it again. He very cordially apologizes and never approaches the horse again, even when Sole says it’s okay.
Deacon knows about horses and how scared they are for its size and it’s only really by pure accident and aligning of stars that the horse backs into him ass first. Jokes it off, asks if Sole trained it to do that. Makes sure never to end up behind it again.
Dogmeat tries to greet the new, large and funny-looking dog but quickly ducks away from its stomping hooves and hides. Only when Sole introduces them to each other slowly and properly do they begin to get along.
Hancock is humble and knows it’s his own fault for not listening. No hard feelings. Lets Sole know he’s sorry for ignoring their command and that he’ll be more careful from now on. Also makes sure the horse knows it wont happen again or there’ll be a big potluck where everyone’s invited.
MacCready pretends it didn’t happen. He gets up, dusts himself off and makes sure Sole knows he’ll listen to them from now on but if this never gets mentioned it again it’ll be too soon. Keeps a good distance from the horse.
Nick can only blame himself, he remembers horses from before and how easily spooked they are. Has some experience with them and ends up making friends with the animal, despite their rocky start. Doesn’t apologize for not listening but takes responsibility for his own actions.
Piper, like Danse, is extremely embarrassed. Like Cait, she also confronts Sole saying how they could’ve warned her the horse was dangerous. Eventually calms down and enjoys riding along with Sole across the wasteland, takes some care of it herself.
Preston praises Sole for having such control over an animal that large and aggressive. Apologizes for not listening and takes time to learn how to approach and care for the horse himself so it’s not a burden Sole has to carry alone.
Strong is about to kick the horse right back when Sole screams at him to stand down. Gets scolded for not listening but thinks it’s bullshit. Bides his time for his revenge on the four legged motherfucker who got away with attacking him.
X6-88 would never disregard a direct order but somehow he ends up behind it and the hind legs connect with his chest and force him flying backwards. Acts like it was just a tumble and not a straight kick in his rib cage. Has him out of breath and sore for days but his composure never falters. Sole did tell him not to approach and he is the only one to blame.
Ada, like Strong, wants revenge but stands down when Sole tells her to calm down. She still spends a lot of time fantasizing about ways to hurt the horse right back.
Longfellow loves animals and feels kinda self-conscious that the horse didn’t immediately take to him, even if horses are almost mythical and unknown in his time. Doesn’t know not to scare horses and he ends up getting thrown around a bit before he gets the hang of it. Knows Sole means business when they say something but eh, you gotta try yourself forward sometimes.
Gage already didn’t trust the thing and this only makes it worse. Tries from time to time to convince Sole to just dump the thing somewhere or for them to cook and eat it. Thinks that even if Sole warned him not to get close that the horse is an unnecessary addition to the party.
Rhys gets mad at the horse, probably out of embarrassment. Agitates it enough that someone has to calm down the horse and someone else has to calm down Rhys. Calls it “yet another wasteland abomination”.
Haylen is also furiously embarrassed (brotherhood peeps got a lot of pride to hurt) but is more apologetic. Asks for information on how to approach it to save face but plans on never going near it again.
Sturges tries to be as gentle as possible but if the horse reacts by biting him after he approaches slowly and with his hands outstretched towards it in good faith then it’s not a friend he plans to make. Doesn’t dislike the horse, it’s just an animal that reacted like an animal, but keeps a deliberate distance. Will still make sure it’s taken proper care of if he has to, no animal has to suffer just because it has instincts.
Father somehow manages to turn it into a lesson about how mankind and the surface world has dwindled into disrepair. Doesn’t take accountability for his own actions, thinks the horse is a lesser animal and shouldn’t be allowed to react that way.
Maxson knows how to be diplomatic and manages to smooth over the fact that he ignored Soles order. Studies the horse to see if it can be utilized for the Brotherhoods benefit but eventually scraps the idea. Definitely romanticizes the old war image of war generals riding into battle on a horse with a bayonet raised high but the cost and the cons outweigh the pros. Like X6-88 he never lets it show that his ribs are severely bruised.
Desdemona just sighs and throws her hands in the air. Yeah, okay. That’s a horse. It doesn’t have to be her problem, she has enough as it is.
Mason definitely tries to mount the horse in some kind of alpha display but immediately gets tossed off a good few metres. Would try more times before getting violent to show the horse who’s boss but Sole probably sets him in his place, either by scolding him or threatening him. Considers the horse a personal challenge.
Nisha plans a slow death for the animal that reeks of shit and dust. Will absolutely kill the horse if it’s left unattended and pretend it was either not her or an accident. Doesn’t care that she was warned, things like that just don’t go by unretaliated.
Mags doesn’t want to go near it all since it’s such a filthy animal but when Sole tells her not to she gets curious. Considers it a lesson learned and to not take Soles word lightly.

I love your writing! What if one day the courier gets extremely hurt by an enemy (human or otherwise) and Yes Man has to come to the rescue?
It’s not often Yes Man gets to go on adventures but it only makes it so much more fun when he does! Nevermind that the sand dries out his oiled gears and gunks up his system, or all the rocks scratching his chassi as he hurries along the wasteland with the Courier in his arms.
They’re always so grandiose when fighting and when they ask for a grenade it’s not like Yes Man can say no. Even though they’re in very tight quarters and the legion mercenaries are bleeding out anyway, only shooting back in desperate attempts not to die unavenged. The boom is so great! Perfectly encapsules the Couriers exploding personality!
The blood pouring from the Couriers shredded hand certainly had bang for its buck, unfortunately it just went off a little sooner than expected. But no worries! None at all! If the hand can’t be saved or reassembled Yes Man will not hesitate to offer his own appendages to his very good friend.
He can admit it’s a little concerning when the Courier lies very limp and pale in his arms, head bobbing along to the bumps in the road, but Yes Man knows that if he can get back to the strip in time the Followers will do everything they can, yessir! As long as no one else interrupts his run, or as long as his gears can still turn there is a good chance everything will be just fine.
If Yes Man had a nose he would be able to smell the hot oil emanating from his body and if he could feel he’d know that the friction in his machinery has already begun to destroy him beyond repair, if it even lasts him all the way back home. But Yes Man can replace his body, the Courier can’t.
So slap his wheel and call him Buttercup because Yes Man is on a mission and Yes Man never fails!
I don’t have a ton of experience with Yes Man so if this feels way too out of character I’m sorry! Please tell me how I got him wrong in that case.

How do you think Charon would react to a LW who, after going through all the trouble to get his contract, tore it up and told him he’s free? Would he still follow the LW as a thanks? Be upset? I always wished there was an option to free him from his contract but instead you have to force him to follow you.
I like thinking about this a lot actually! I think I remember reading somewhere that if you damage the contract Charon will stop you to “protect it” but I could be wrong.
-
The Lone Wanderer has read the contract over and out, upside down and has even examined the paper for fine print hidden somewhere but it’s clear as day; as long as you hold the contract, Charon is obliged to follow your command.
And it’s not fair.
For how long has he been bound by words written by long dead assholes who didn’t give a shit about how this would control his life? Charon’s very, very long life? And they didn’t even given him a way out of it?
No, LW can’t continue knowing the power this piece of paper holds. It’s just paper too. Thicker and sturdier than the paper they remember the vault had been outfitted with, but still... flammable paper.
They know Charon won’t readily agree to destroying the paper and maybe it’s more than just the paper controlling him. It’s been his life for over 200 years, it’s made its mark on his soul but isn’t that all the more reason to destroy it? He doesn’t have to know, not at first.
They take a deep breath and shudder in anticipation, both with fear and relief, as they carefully place the contract in a bucket. Charon has been sent to purchase supplies and he’ll be out for a while still, will he even notice a change? They light a match, smelling the phosphorus reaction and drop it.
The light drops to the bottom of the bucket and slowly fades out.
The tension immediately drops and LW mentally smacks themselves while lighting another match and this time holding it to the paper to let it catch fire. It takes a moment, as if it refuses to die, but soon enough the flames grow and the paper begins to burn.
It doesn’t take long and it’s not nearly half as grand as it feels it should be. It really was just paper.
LW doesn’t tell Charon right way, at first testing the waters to see any changes, but, of course the contract wasn’t magic and Charon still believes it controls him. A week later they sit him down in their shared little shack in Megaton, the only proper safe space for either of them, and they tell him. Charon doesn’t believe them, naturally, and even when they show him the ashes in the charred bucket he refuses to believe but then slowly it starts to sink in.
He tears the place apart looking for the contract, breaking shelves and tearing up floorboards and LW is scared, for themselves and for Charon. He lunges at them, grabs them by the collar and almost lifts them from the ground while he screams for it, for LW to show him it still exists. They have never felt so close to hell as they do now, to see that terrified rage in his eyes, to feel his hands bruising the skin he’s promised to protect.
But the contract is gone. He doesn’t have to protect them anymore.
LW considers saying their prayers and accepting that while it cost them their life, at least he can begin to live now but then he softens. His grip loosens and his posture sinks and his eyes aren’t even really looking at them anymore, they’re far away in a different world and he crumbles to the ground.
It takes weeks before he even starts eating on his own, before his eyes start registering what’s happening around him again. Weeks of LW softly speaking to him, of feeding and cleaning him and constantly trying to coax him back to the real world. LW is terrified that they may have given Charon a fate worse than death, a fate worse than being a slave but they don’t have it in them to give up.
Burning the contract was an easy task, it was just paper after all. But Charon has to destroy the contract inside him. It takes some time, but soon he comes back little by little, until one day LW brings a glass of water to his mouth and tells him to drink, only for him to look them in the eyes and knock the glass out of their hands.

also I’m sorry for the very very long hiatus and maybe I’m back. I’ll try doing the asks I got in my inbox and I am GENUINELY SUPER SORRY for the people who sent in asks, esp. the anon ones, because I know it’s been such a long time and you’ve probably given up hope and forgotten about this. I know what it’s like to send in an ask you want to read and then it just never shows and I seriously apologize.
