The problem with killing someone is that you can't do it twice.

Light inhales, exhales. His nearsightedness problem has been getting worse lately. It's the product of working too much, according to his mom; he doesn't go outside enough. Sometimes he's jealous of Misa, whose vision is perfect thanks to her being stupid enough to preemptively kill herself for him twice. Once they'd been waiting for the bus and she'd read out the number on the one approaching before he could parse it and he'd almost hit her. It'd been a bad day. He's not usually like that. Anyway: the stars blur through the roof cracks, he has to squint to make them out and then feels annoyed at himself for bothering. The stars don't matter. His realm is here.

"Light?"

"I could do it," he says.

"By writing his name, yes. I'm very familiar with your supernatural murder notebook."

"I could do it," he repeats. "I'm going to do it."

"Oh, you've decided?"

"If he doesn't write anyone's name in thirteen days, I'll do it."

"He won't."

"I know that." Irritation flares. God, he really wishes he smoked. He would only do it in places like this, far away from everyone else. He would be a noble smoker, unlike the ones he'd crossed the road to avoid back in middle school. (By high school his worry about his lungs had lost out to his worry about looking prissy.) "Shouldn't you be, I don't know, smug about being right? Your successor's plenty smug."

"Is Yagami-kun upset that I'm disappointed in him?"

"Fuck you."

"Your father-son bond was very touching to watch from the sidelines. Personally, I've never had a—"

"Save the dramatics, Ryuzaki! You thought it was stupid! You thought I should have brought a gun onto that helicopter."

"I admired your father for sticking to his principles."

"Oh, but not me for sticking to mine?"

"You've never stuck to any principles in your life."

"I have principles," Light grits out. "I am saving the world."

"There's no need to lie to yourself, Yagami-kun."

"I wish I could kill you again," Light says. "I really, really do, Ryuzaki."

"My name is L. You know that."

It's true. Light blinks quickly, twice.

"So you're sacrificing your father for your principles, then."

"Yeah." His voice comes out calm and confident. He feeds the audio of it back into his brain, lets him convince himself. "I can do it. It'll be hard, but when is anything easy."

"You talk too much for a supposedly honest person."

Light actually laughs. "Are you doubting me?"

"Have I ever not?"

"Are you doubting Kira's ability to," Light does air quotes, "'be evil' and sacrifice his family. Because that's not like you at all. You would never. The real L would never."

"You're right. I don't doubt you. I'm not even here."

"Go away, then," Light says, and isn't disappointed when he does.

I humbly suggest that true crime freaks should get into learning about scammers instead of serial killers. I LOVE reading about fraud and grifts and pyramid schemes. true crime ppl have all this paranoid energy about murder, which is rare in the grand scheme of things.....maybe instead that could be channeled into some productive rage toward capitalism.

ooh I'm curious, how does the lind L tailor thing factor with your observation that L's principle that he doesn't want to risk people dying in his plans? to clarify, I'm not bringing that up to disagree with your point, I actually kind of see it I feel (intuitively, at least; I haven't thought a lot about this particular subject) but I'm not sure I know how the tv broadcast plan squares with it, and I feel like you might happen to have some interesting insight on that thing with your appreciation of L and everything!

No, that's a fair question!

When I say that L works on that principle, I mean deaths that should be avoided, so like, people that aren't supposed to die or aren't involved in any way in the case and he would have to personally bring in and then choose for them.

With Lind L. Taylor, he was already scheduled to die that day at that hour. L had no saying in this. It was the Japanese justice system. Either he died by Kira's hand or by hanging. There was no way to avoid his death.

L used this in his favour, so that he wouldn't condemn a person who wasn't on the death row, so that he wouldn't be personally responsible for their fate. It's also interesting that he specifies "at this hour", like he didn't even take time away from him.

So, this is how it factors in. I don't know how interesting of an insight it is, but I hope it cleared up any doubt! Thank you for the ask!
