something I literally CANNOT stop thinking about are the implications of helly's innie having a different last name.

like okay yeah obviously for meta reasons, they weren't gonna have her be "Helly E" bc that would make things way too obvious. but this show is so sharply written that I can't imagine there's not an in-universe reason for her to use the last name "riggs".

the fact that she's helena as an outie but is told that her name is helly as an innie seems to show that lumon wants to, at least marginally, separate the two of them for optics — PR-wise it looks better if the fact that they're two separate people is really hammered home? but it's not just a random name either; it's a nickname derived from her full name, which means that there's an attempt at toeing the line between optically both linking and differentiating helena and helly. so that would lead me to believe that riggs isn't just a random name, there's some significance to it in helena's life.

so what is it? is it her mother's maiden name? is it her mother's maiden name that's also helena's middle name? is it her married name? probably not, because she's introduced as "helena eagan." is she married and she just uses her spouse's name as her innie's surname to further differentiate herself from helly? if so then why isn't the person she's married to at the gala with her? it seems like the kind of place a spouse would be at especially since the whole event was really centered around helena. are we gonna find out that she has like a whole family? a husband who was at home watching their kids while she was at the gala?

the way outie Mark refers to innie Mark as a part of himself while innie Mark refers to outie Mark as a completely different person and the way Helena refers to herself as a person while Helly is not… incheresting

I love the part in Severance where the mark's innie learns independence and self respect and is introduced to anti-work/anti-capitalism ideas and all that through a poorly written shitty shitfest book by his future brother in law because it really does show that what is shitty media to one person is literally life saving to another. People who have the privilege of knowing about ideas that go against the system they're in will look at shitty media explaining ideas they know and then hate on it but that could very well be the thing to radicalize someone who's never toyed with that idea am I making sense do you understand
