INTERVIEW: David Tennant On The Power, The Horror & The Naivety Of Kilgrave
As the American TV industry heads into Emmy season, Yahoo! TV are focusing on performances that they consider to be worthy of nomination. To that end, they have spoken to David Tennant whose performance as Kilgrave, the childish, twisted villain from Marvel’s Jessica Jones was met with universal critical acclaim upon the 13-part series’ release on Netflix last year. David was asked to reflect upon some of the key scenes between Kilgrave and Jessica and consider how the show has opened up conversations on the themes of obsession, coercion and sexual violence.

Character Mortality
Over the past few months several characters in television have been killed off by their writers. The CW show The 100 is one of the most visible in social media due to the outcry when one of the lead characters was killed out of the blue. This caused a great backlash among the fandom against the writer Jason Roth.
**Spoilers Beyond This Point**
I feel that there are two valid sides to this fight. First is the stance that the fans took - that by having Lexa be happy with Clarke and then die - that they were queer baited. I would agree that this plot twist sent the message that if a character or characters aren’t heterosexual then they can’t be happy or they will die. It certainly didn’t help that 2 episodes later they killed off another character for no reason. It also doesn’t help that the rest of the season served no real purpose in furthering the story, and that the reunion of Clarke and Lexa in the season finale left much to be desired.
The other side of this is that the fans need to remember that it is the writers who control the story. That the fandom community has no real say in how the plot develops or how a character develops. That is why fan fiction exists. We also need to remember not to take it out on the actors who are still on the show. They also have no say in these matters and often can’t retaliate in anyway without losing their job.
So yes complain about the writers if they don’t have a valid reason for killing off a character. Or if they intentionally queer bait or bully the fandom. But remember that it may not have any real effect on the show/movie. Unless the writer is George RR Martin, because I swear if he kills off Daenarys, Tyrion, Arya, or Brienne then I’m done. I almost quit after Hodor. Damn you GRRM!

Megacon 2016
For the most part I had a very good weekend this year. However the biggest let down was the lack of clarity when it came to what one received with the premium tickets. I assumed (and that is my error there) that if there was a tiered ticket system there would be a tiered line system. That VIPs would get in to panels and stuff first, then the premium, then deluxe, and finally everyone else. Nope, the only thing my premium ticket got me was access to a room with some tables and chairs, a tin lunch box, a comic book, and some batman art. Needless to say that I am not impressed and very much wish that I had gone ahead and bought the VIP ticket.

Under the Lake/ Before the Flood

I loved these episodes. Not only because they seemed to have the same flair as the early Classic episodes, but also because they raised a question that makes you think and then doesn’t try to solve it for you with an absolute answer.
Everyone keeps talking about how they hate the sonic sunglasses, but I want to talk about the paradox that was left to us. If the doctor went back in time and gave Beethoven his 5th, but didn’t compose it himself, who really wrote it? This is a phenomenon that plagues every story ever written/ told. Where does a story truly begin? Did the writer allow themselves to be over influenced by other stories they’ve read? If a new writer’s stories are all just re-telling of the same story did they really write that story, and who actually wrote it to begin with? Because the author whose story influenced the new author’s story was probably influenced by another story written by a different author.
Even these thoughts that I am putting down can follow the same pattern. I read books and essays in college that introduced this question. But who first asked it?
If we focus only on a tiny detail to the story that has changed because we don’t like change, we miss the bigger issue. We miss the point of the story.

I saw this when watching the show and couldn’t help but start singing it. It’s been 2 days now and it is still STUCK IN MY HEAD! It makes me wonder if this is the new version of the drums...

The Magician’s Apprentice
While I understand that there was a lot of plot needed in this season premiere, I felt that the way the cut between scenes was a little abrupt. There were a few times when I felt as though I had been given whiplash by the sudden turn. It makes me worry that Moffat is trying to put too many twists in this new season.
Other than the plot-lash I enjoyed the nod to the Tom Baker story arch - Genesis of the Daleks - and am looking forward to more tie-ins with classic Doctor Who. Though I am wary that if they start to consistently use old story lines that the originality that makes this show so great, could get lost. The writers did a nice job with bringing back the Ice Warriors last season, so I will continue to be optimistic.

Here it is, canon evidence that Salazar Slytherin was NOT a racist bigot. He was concerned for the well-being and safety of the magical community, which could have been compromised by letting the “common people” know that wizards and witches existed.

I like Once More With Feeling because it kind of parallels a time in my life. I didn’t die, but I was in a really good place and was abruptly yanked out of it. Then I was expected to just carry on as if I wasn’t even affected by it. Buffy is just one of those shows that speaks to me.
Once More With Feeling is my favorite, since I just love musicals! The Gentlemen is my least favorite, since they're just too creepy. I mean, who smiles like that?
I think Once More With Feeling is everyone’s favorite! =D It heavily features all the loveable characters and let’s them have at least one song dedicated to each of them in turn so that everyone gets their time in the spotlight, no pun intended. Plus it can really be seen as the climax of season 6, where Buffy’s big secret finally comes to light as she spends the rest of the season trying to come to terms with everything.
And I think a lot of people are definitely also afraid of the Gentleman. I just remember that episode as being really funny so I can’t wait until I get up to screencapping season 4 so that I can watch that episode again!

Spot on about the companions. I wish people would stop belittling them because they think that these women always need a man (the Doctor, Micky, Rory) in order to be amazing. But, it’s the men of the show that need these women to become a hero.
The longest confessions I believe we have ever gotten.
Tumblr media
Anon: Sorry, this is a long one. But you don’t need to put an image with it if you don’t want to.
It’s on a something I’m sick and tired of seeing - someone commenting, nastily, either on Facebook or Tumblr, that either Donna Noble, Martha Jones, or River Song were “the worse companion ever!“
Every companion has their strengths and their weaknesses, but no companion is the "worse.” No, not even Peri Brown, though she’s often called “just a damsel in distress” and “nothing but a screaming pair of tits.” Peri is more than a pair of breasts. (Though I admit, I wish they would’ve hired an actual American actress so we wouldn’t have the Amazing Disappearing Reappearing American Accent. But I can name a number of American actors who have no business playing British or Irish characters for the same reason.)
I admit, I don’t always like a companion fully - I don’t and never will ship the Doctor and Rose and I sway between loving Clara and hating her. But the truth is, what turns me off them more than anything is people trying to shove them down my throat while dissing other companions. It makes me biased against them simply because of people who obsess over them so rabidly they actually tell people who don’t to kill themselves.  If those people would just calm down and shut up it would make it a lot easier to enjoy Rose and Clara’s stints as companions.
But what makes it worse is their dismissal of Donna, Martha, and River with shallow statements that “Donna was nothing but a loud mouth” and Martha “did nothing but moon over the Doctor.” As for River, they hate her for the same reason Johnlock shippers hate Mary, because she “gets in the way” of their Doctor/Rose, Doctor/Clara, or Doctor/Jack Harkness ships. (Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Gallifreyians are allowed to have multiple husbands and wives. So how can she “get in the way” of any ship anyway?)  All three ladies come from abusive backgrounds. Both Donna and Martha suffer emotional and mental abuse at the hands of their mothers. Donna more so than Martha, of course. Her mother treats her like a shit stain. Always putting her down. When Donna vanishes on her wedding day what happens? People PARTY! She could’ve been kidnapped, raped, murdered, dismembered, and thrown into the garbage. Did anyone look for her or care? Nope. They just got drunk. Wilf’s the only one who shows her any love or believes in her until the Doctor comes along.  And yet Donna is willing to put her life on the line for the Doctor despite having the worse wedding day ever. I mean, her fiance’s been cheating on her with an alien spider-woman and planning on killing her from the start. She should be a broken down emotional heap and what do we get instead? A woman willing to face that same alien spider-woman to defend the Doctor? She stands up to him as well to save the lives of people who should’ve died in Pompei. She fought for the Oods when she realized how mistreated and abused they were. And all that time thought she was a nothing, “Just a temp from Chiswick.” That her mother was right - she’d never amount to anything, never find true love.
Martha - yes, Martha wished the Doctor would love her. But she grew and accepted she’d never be more than a friend. She walked the earth. She put aside her medical career to help save people. And put up with a mother who put her down and a cheating father who preferred women younger than his own kids. Not to mention a nasty mouthed sister. She also was able to see past her family’s flaws and find them worth loving and fighting for. And she was able to walk away from the Doctor when she knew the time was right.
River - we don’t know half the Hell River went though. She was kidnapped from her own parents. Raised to kill the Doctor. Brainwashed, manipulated, controlled. And yet was able to break free from all that, fought her way out of her programming. Fell in love. And eventually sacrificed her life to save others. For a man who didn’t know her because they kept meeting out of order.
How can anyone look at all that and dismiss them as “the worse companion ever”? These ladies are amazing and are right up there with classic companions like Sarah Jane Smith and Jamie McCrimmon.
