Every now and then I'll see a suggested post here on Tumblr about writing, and they'll say something like "don't write unless you're confident" or "if you aren't happy with your writing, no one will be reading it" and I'd just like to make one thing clear.

THESE ARE LIES.

Write when you choose to, not when others do. Write bad, write dumb, write things you'll hate. What matters is that YOU chose to write, no one chose it for you. And no one chose for you to not write, either. You made that choice, no one else. And so what if it's bad, that's what editors are for. You can be your own editor, you can make something out of nothing. And if you really, truly hate it then dump it somewhere you won't see it. You can reconsider in a few years or don't. It's YOUR choice.

No one will like it? As if. Everyone likes different things, there's always going to be someone out there who would love to read it. The amount of times I've shared something that I was meh on and gotten love for is high. You can absolutely dislike your writing and have readers that love it. I'm willing to bet people who say that have read things the author didn't love and also loved that, they just don't know it.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but trying to tell people not to write just because that works for you is cruel. Doing that is like taking away art from the world. If you don't want to share writing that you think is bad then DON'T. But don't come here and tell others to do it that way, too. Suggest, sure, but you don't make the rules for other writers. They do.
