pride is standing in front of a police barricade, screaming your lungs out about the millions of your elders who died from an epidemic brought about by homophobia, tears running down your face

pride is standing in your room, staring down at your chest and trying to will it to change, only to quickly pull your shirt down and pretend nothing was happening when your family asks what was up

pride is spending your life in the closet, afraid to come out because youre afraid your parents/caregivers will beat you and throw you out

pride is seeing your lgbt brothers and sisters fall at the hands of homophobes and transphobes, and mourning the loss with your community

pride is loving yourself despite all the hate society as a whole throws at you daily.

pride is finding a way to smile in spite of the pain youve gone through.

pride is being brave, and im so proud of all of my lgbt siblings for making it this far.

That surreal moment when I explained to my new roommate what it’s like living with clinical depression, ADD, and generalized social anxiety because he seriously had never known someone to openly talk about the mental illness they live with.

It was weird to describe it, but I think he understood what I was attempting to describe.

Describing my mental/behavioral health with someone that doesn’t also live with it was enlightening.

I seriously thought I’d be better at just loving myself by 31, but it’s still work. I’m having an absolutely shitty time trying to remain positive about my worth, my body, and my life in general. So, just so everyone knows, the struggle is life long and ABSOLUTELY FUCKING WORTH IT. I don’t even care if I’ve gained weight because I focus more on loving myself than caring if I am considered attractive. I’ll get back to the gym. I’ll lose weight again. That’s not even a big deal. What is a big deal is learning to love myself over and over regardless of the season I find myself in.

To everyone that struggles with self love I’d like to say: Remain positive, seek help when you need it, love yourself, and treat yourself. You aren’t weak. People care about and love you. You have worth. You matter.
