a cut of cloth — @samfrosummer day 10: wild card (crafting/summer pastimes)

Frodo can’t handle certain types of fabrics—Sam weaves together a handmade tunic for the one fabric he can.

When Sam blinks, it is morning, and the dye has drenched his hands periwinkle in his sleep. He huffs a curse, but makes no really effort to erase the damage—at least, the tunic has been saved from the deepness of the color, and is, as planned, a soft blue-violet. Sam thinks it will go nice with Frodo’s eyes, and the fox-bone buttons he whittled on a starry night a few weeks ago.

With the tunic dried in the night, his hands as well, he unfolds it to catch sight of it in the sun. It does well, a crisp color—most importantly, the fabric is soft, not scratchy nor clingy, nor too tight in the wrong areas. The many complaints he heard Frodo spout in his presence. And he understands, Sam, for there are many hand-me-down trousers he has inherited that fit too tight, with too many patches of different fabrics to be gentle on the skin. He understands, and he’s sorry Frodo must always wear clothes that feel wrong.

But he had found a safer fabric, a cotton-mix that Frodo always said felt like a mid-summer’s breeze on his skin. With a little extra fixing—and some help from his sisters—Sam whipped up a mighty fine tunic for Frodo’s wearing.

It is nearing afternoon when he makes it to Frodo’s house, Bag End has its doors open for the fresh air. Inside it smells of thick honey tea and the beginnings of luncheon. He finds Frodo by an open window, sucking in the wind’s breath.

“Mr. Frodo,” Sam greets, and though more words fail he holds out the tunic—wrapped in a cut of wax paper he stole from the kitchens.

Frodo opens it tentatively, but when he feels the fabric his smile grows. “Oh, Sam, my dear, dear Sam.” He runs a thumb along the seams, along the fabric itself, Sam watches as a weight seems to lift.

“Thank you,” Frodo whispers. “I-“

Sam cuts in, blushing. “It was no work, honest. I want you comfortable, and nothings too much to do for that outcome.”

Quickly, Frodo slips into the shirt. Sam clears his throat and moves his gaze to the garden below the window. It is only after a moment that Frodo pulls him down to join him on his seat. The kiss he receives is another act of gratitude.

my brain is a kneaded dough ball currently so i don’t have it in me to write a full fic for the last day of samfro summer but i could do a little ficlet for a mix of prompts i rather enjoyed ^_^

au where frodo is in rivendale on his way home from gondor, telling bilbo about his quest. he’s explained all the horrible details and then he’s like “but it’s not all been terrible. i have made lifelong friends in the fellowship. and uncle… i also found love.”

and bilbo goes very pale and tells frodo that he’s sure gimli is a lovely lad but relationships between dwarves and hobbits, well, they can be very tricky, see. has frodo thought this through?

and frodo, who had been talking about sam, just stares at his uncle. he thinks about the mithril shirt, a priceless treasure given as a ‘token of friendship.’ he thinks about his uncle's love of storytelling but caginess about the fallen dwarven king in particular. how he had to learn from gimli, who learned from his father, how close bilbo and thorin's friendship had been. and then he thinks about the fact his uncle never married and he thinks Oh. OH.

sam enters moments later. the misunderstanding is cleared up by sam's arm around frodo's waist and sam's earnest, awkward promises to treat Bilbo's newphew right. but there’s a haunted look in bilbo’s eyes even as he congratulates them that frodo does not have the courage to ask his uncle about. and anyway, it seems unkind, somehow, to ask.
