Firefox OS comes to an end on the smartphone business!!!
Mozilla announced early today that is shutting down FirefoxOS for smartphones.
“We are proud of the benefits Firefox OS added to the Web platform and will continue to experiment with the user experience across connected devices. We will build everything we do as a genuine open source project, focused on user experience first and build tools to enable the ecosystem to grow.
Firefox OS proved the flexibility of the Web, scaling from low-end smartphones all the way up to HD TVs. However, we weren’t able to offer the best user experience possible and so we will stop offering Firefox OS smartphones through carrier channels.
We’ll share more on our work and new experiments across connected devices soon.”
The company will likely to continue development of FirefoxOS targeting the other devices, such as TV’s, and the Internet of Things.
After two years, it’s time to say goodbye to the platform :(
Farewell FirefoxOS, we will miss you!

Introducing FirefoxOS 2.5 Add-Ons
FirefoxOS 2.5 Add-Ons package is composed of JavaScript, CSS and other assets, but it doesn’t run as a standalone app.
Add-ons on Firefox OS are even more powerful and it provides customization not only to the browser, but the whole phone experience, including tweaks to the homescreen and system apps.
The manifest is very simple, just like any other FxOS app. The “matches” field works like a filter to where the add-on will be loaded. Filters determines if an app is affected by the add-on.
{ “manifest_version”: 1, “name”: “Add-On Berries”, “description”: “FirefoxOS add-on”, “version”: “1.0”, “author”: “Quen-Quen Potter”, “content_scripts”: [{ “matches”: [“app://berries.berrycreative.ppg.br‎”], “css”: [“css/style.css”], “js”: [“js/fxos.js”] }], “icons”: { “96”: “/icons/96.png” “128”: “/icons/128.png” }
The manifest above matches only BerriesApp and the website.

No more hacking! Get FirefoxOS 2.5 on your Android now! #FirefoxOS #FFOSclub #FxOS Mozilla made easier for the users to test the FirefoxOS on your Android device without even needing to flash it. The FirefoxOS 2.5 Developer Preview operates as a launcher and the app is now available under only 92mb. When you launch it, Firefox OS 2.5 Developer Preview will replace your existing home screen as FirefoxOS, making it act kind of like a third-party launcher. You'll be able to test the OS and some stock apps included. Bugs or conflicting UI elements might occur as the FirefoxOS will run on top of the Android. One thing most users will notice as a bug is that on FirefoxOS there's no back button. Despite being just a developer preview, it's a nice way to get a look on what's Mozilla is building up. Download now at: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/os/2.5/

Welcome to FirefoxOS 2.5 #FirefoxOS #FFOSclub #FxOS
FirefoxOS 2.5 opens up a range of new possibilities, especially for developers. Firefox OS 2.5 will be the most customizable, secure, locally relevant and empowering Firefox OS experience yet.
The introduction of Add-Ons will allow a customizable experience in a similar way to the Firefox browser. Packed just like an app, add-ons can power one app, several or all apps, including the system app itself.
The Pin the Web is a great addition as provide users to ‎grab websites and turn them into home screen icons. View Source of a website and private browsing tracking protection are amongst the great additions to this new version of FxOS.
There’s tons of new stuff for customization as 2.5 has been designed as a completely hackable and customizable operating system.

Sometimes words can't express how you feel. For that, there's Emojis, the colorful Japanese Character.
Get Emoji Keyboard for Firefox OS 2.0+
Download it from the marketplace
https://marketplace.firefox.com/app/emoji-keyboard/
The emoji set embedded in Firefox OS (NotoColorEmoji) comes from Android KitKat and is incomplete. You might find that some emojis are missing (like the flags) and others are not colored but displayed as black shapes. The black shape emojis come from the fallback font AndroidEmoji that contains a bit more emoji symbols.

Mozilla’s Node.js modules for Firefox OS
Mozilla has open-sourced node-firefox, a collection of Node.js modules to help developers create Firefox OS apps.
The modules allow developers to interact with Firefox using Mozilla’s DevTools remote protocol in their already existing Node.js tool chains, but through Mozilla’s WebIDE tool in a more terminal-based experience. Each module performs a different task in a separate repository, ultimately published to the npm registry.
Current node-firefox module capabilities include port discovery, runtime connections, simulator launching and reloading style sheets. The modules can also install, uninstall and launch apps. Mozilla is exploring the possibility of adding WebCLI integration, DevTools debugger attachments and Firefox OS custom editions.
More information can be found in a Mozilla blog post, and node-firefox is available on GitHub.

Firefox OS Matchstick delays to redesign and to offer Netflix streaming
Matchstick's Firefox OS-based streaming media dongle got delayed to August 2015 in order to not only upgrade the hardware (to a quad-core processor, better WiFi and DRM), but to add support for anti-piracy protection and to offer Netflix streaming.
As the team explains, Netflix and other "premium" services won't work unless you have some kind of digital rights management (DRM) -- it's hard to sell a media stick that can't deliver the most popular content.
The product finds itself competing against an ever-increasing array of big-name companies with top-tier content, including Google’s Chromecast and streaming-media sticks from Amazon and Roku.
Matchstick is one of several initiatives to bring Firefox OS to embedded devices beyond phones and tablets.

Updates for App Developers From Firefox Marketplace The Firefox Marketplace beta is now open on the desktop in the Firefox browser, running on Windows, Mac, and Linux. All users can download desktop apps and access the Marketplace from both the Tools menu and optional toolbar button. The desktop gives skilled app developers access to hundreds of millions of Firefox desktop users around the world. For HTML5 game developers, it's an environment for gameplay and graphics that require reliable bandwidth and connectivity. Design responsively and optimize apps to run across multiple devices, or, if performance is a key consideration, consider optimizing for desktop first. The release includes features to help users discover new apps: an onscreen showcase for collections of games, entertainment, and productivity apps and a spotlight for editorially selected apps. Look for guidance in how to get your FFOS apps available also on Firefox browser.

The Firefox OS is already powered in low-cost and mid-end smartphones, and will be used in 4K TVs expelled by Panasonic in 2015.
Now Mozilla is planning a version of the Firefox OS for wearables, and one of the top priorities is to break down barriers among smartwatches, home appliances and other wearables devices.
It's important to push the OS into more Web-connected devices and to provide a consistent user experience - Joe Cheng, manager of product and project management of the mobile devices group at Mozilla.
The goal for the Firefox OS is to provide an underlying operating system for all mobile devices, TVs, appliances and wearables to easily communicate and exchange information with each other, Cheng said.
This is another smart move by Mozilla to expand the OS. But what about the current smartphones users still on OS 1.1? We will get into this talk in the next article! Stay tunned!
