Recent Training Evolution
Since my last post, my training has been more focused on total body workouts and full body movements – such as sand bag over bar and med ball slams – for more explosive power and full body tension. My focus is on applicable and truly usable strength; ‘the ability to lift and move cumbersome objects safely and swiftly.’ – Finn 2019.
Following my viewing of Joe Rogan #1262 with Pat McNamarawher…

Issues with "conventional" nutrition
Issues with “conventional” nutrition
As part of my first year in sport and exercise science, I was asked to write an essay comparing and contrasting the nutritional recommendations of a sedentary adult and elite athlete of my choosing. I went for Olympic weightlifting as it has the most research and data on the subject.
This project highlighted a few issues for me as a nutrition enthusiast, as the standard recommendations for…

Weekly Training Log 5
Weekly Training Log 5
This week was during my Easter break from university which I spent with my family.
My first training session of the week was on Friday with my dad and his friend, after a week off. First was squats where I worked up to a single of 120kg, a new PR. Then two attempts at 122kg both failed in the hole. After that I did higher rep sets at 100kg hitting at least three reps each set for four sets…

Why Giant sets
I like to use giant sets and super sets when working on my big lifts, mostly bench and over head press, to save time as well as increasing power output.
What is a giant/super set?
In contrast with standard rep-set format, the giant set involves combining three exercises or movements into one set/ round. For example, when you perform the standard bench press the conventional method would be…

Weekly Training Log 3
Weekly Training Log 3
Monday’s training was a great success for me, as I was able to break through my maximum deadlift and pass my 2x body weight checkpoint.
I started with squats at 90kg for higher reps to technique failure, roughly 5-8 reps per set and followed by deadlifting for an unintended and successful max lift, beltless at 145kg for a single. I coupled this with weighted chin ups and burpee broad jumps…

Autism in the lifting community.
Autism in the lifting community.
I was recently made aware of the movement Lift up autism. The basic idea is that people with the united interest in lifting – whether that be strongman, powerlifting, crossfit, Olympic weightlifting or just lifting for health and to be active – we can all help to raise awareness for autism. I was first introduced to this by the YouTube channel Brian Alsruhe and later Szat Strength. Two channels…

Weekly Training Log 2
Weekly Training Log 2
This week’s training was not optimal for my lower body, overall. This comes from having knee pain in my left leg on Monday, which limited the weight I was able to lift and the volume as well. Wednesday didn’t go too well for squats, either, Although my legs felt much better and able to handle higher weights, the bottom floor of the gym was holding a crossfit style class. This meant that the racks…

Can You Eat Yourself Happier? A Deeper Look into Meat and Grains for Mental Health
Can You Eat Yourself Happier? A Deeper Look into Meat and Grains for Mental Health
Original article found here Nutritional psychiatry: can you eat yourself happier?
So my girlfriend showed me this article, knowing it would ruffle my feathers and send me on an hours worth of rants and ravings. I decided to focus my ramblings into this post to vent and spread my understanding of a very hot topic of late.
In general, the removal of ‘processed foods’ such as pizza,…
