Now, about this post: I cannot believe we’re having the bottom/top discourse on Shuri Udaku’s internet in 2025, but here we are.

This person sent me a DM saying I didn’t let them clarify what they were saying, but I got it loud and clear: Bottom = submissive = weak. I don’t need clarification because they said it loud and clear. Being averse to sex is normal, but talking about this particular sex act, with this particular character, of this race, while talking about submission adds a different context and that’s what I addressed.

People often conflate submission to weakness, and weakness is seen as ‘feminine’. Bottoming is seen as ‘feminine’. “You don’t want this Black man to be seen as weak or feminine and that’s what he’ll be if he likes to receive pleasure instead of give it” (people are so — I’m cringing typing that out).

Also, even if any of these things meant that Sam was ‘weak’, why can’t he be? Why is he always held to this higher standard? Why doesn’t he get to show vulnerability? Why doesn’t he get to try and like different things? Why can’t he explore sexual expression? Why is he always pigeonholed? Why is submission seen as weak? Why are people still pretending that they don’t equate submission with weakness and weakness with being feminine/female/a woman? Why are Black men still held to these ridiculous standards of masculinity that are seeped in racism and misogyny? I don’t have the answers as to why, but I’m going to unpack it and try to dismantle it in our fandom spaces, especially when it comes to Sam Wilson. For the most part, I’m just over here writing about Sam getting railed and being revered.
