What strikes me about this page is that there is no text — no dialogue, no internal monologue, not even sound effects. Usually in this series, and earlier in this particular issue, we are treated to Jason's private thoughts. Since he is the protagonist, we the audience see things from his perspective, meaning we are invited into spaces that even other characters aren't. In fact, in the beginning of this comic in particular, Jason opines about how much and for how long he admired Dick and how difficult it is to tell him. But now, at this moment — silence.

For a writer, the words you choose not to say are as important as the ones you do. You constantly have to decide how much to tell the audience at any given moment. (That's why the curtains are never just purple.) This means that the silence on this page is deliberate.

Let's take that a step further and think about the comic medium specifically. Usually, a comic has an entire team of people working at (especially massively syndicated comics like DC has). This involves a writer, yes, but also an artist, a penciler, and an inker (typically). These folks are the ones responsible for creating and arranging the visual aspects of the comic, including text and text boxes. Not including any text on an entire page (four panels total) means that at least four creators understood the necessity for silence in this scene. The silence is deliberate.

So what does all that mean? It means that the audience has been kicked out of Jason's private space. When we could read his thoughts, we were part of him. When we could "hear" dialogue, we were conversationalists at best, eavesdroppers at worst. But in absence of all of that, we are voyeurs. We have not been invited in; rather, we are virtually watching this scene through a peephole. (It's the lack of sound effects that gives this away, to me. Dick is moving in this scene, and even as agile as he is, there should be shuffling or rustling or something coloring his movements. There is none.)

By forcing the audience to be voyeurs, the comic is insinuating that we're witnessing something private and intimate and perhaps sacred. We're intruding on something personal that Jason, our confidante up to this point, has not invited us to share.

The conclusion?
