We had never been to Bryce Canyon, Utah, so what better way to see it then the Bryce Canyon 50 mile (80km) Ultra race! The course is mostly between 8,000 and 9,000 feet above the sea and has some amazing single track trail that weaves through the sandstone “Hoodoo” spires of Red Canyon. Thanks to @ultraadventures for putting on a great race. The aid stations were well stocked with goodies and I’d recommend the 50km or 60km race for someone’s first ultra. Also, thanks to @endurobites for making bars that I can eat when my mouth is as dry as sawdust. 2019 will be an amazing year, no doubt about it. The new year brings career changes, athletic challenges, and travel... all of the things we enjoy most. Jaala is spending the winter enjoying Colorado before traveling to Italy in spring. Larry is exploring Central Asia before joining Jaala. Jaala will be competing in @GORUCK Selection, one of the hardest endurance events in the world. Larry will be pushing his rock climbing limits around the world. Colorado bighorn sheep are amazing! We love exploring the wilderness and encountering nature, but sometimes those encounters can raise your heart rate a little. A few months ago I was riding my mountain bike through the thick forests of Wyoming when I saw a black mass in front of me. My first thought was a small black bear. The animal turned around to square up on me and it was a 125lb black wolf with a beautiful coat and creepy eyes. I stood tall to display dominance as I reached for my bear spray. A second 150lb grey wolf joined in the stare down, then both disappeared into the woods. The greater Banff area is one of the most amazing places on earth with jaw dropping scenery in every direction. Banff marked the end of my 2,700 mile mountain bike race across the Rockies called the Tour Divide. It was an amazing 25 day journey that began at the Mexican Border in New Mexico. The remote nature of the race lended itself to many wildlife encounters. 1 bear, 1 big cat, 3 wolves, 1 fox, 5 wild horses, and hundreds of wild turkey, deer, pronghorn, and elk ensured that a surprise could be expected at any time. This race exposed me to amazing places in the American and Canadian Rockies, and it's a lifetime experience I'll never forget. The Tour Divide is the longest mountain bike race in the world, and some would argue the hardest. It hugs the Continental Divide from Banff, Alberta to Mexico on dirt trails. I'm not a mountain biker, but I am an explorer and with odds of success less than 50% it is a worthy challenge, and I'm in this year. I'll depart from Mexico on May 22nd and ride northbound to Banff. Most ride southbound in mid-June so I'll high 5 riders in Montana as we posthole across snowed in mountain passes. I'll post a link to the live satellite tracking website before I depart and will update our website http://www.fliesonawall.com via Strava when I have service. Here's the tale of the tape: Length: 2,700+ miles Elevation gain: 180,000+ ft. Number of times the trail crosses the Continental Divide: 32 Number of riders that started last year (Trackleaders): 197 Number of riders that finished last year (Trackleaders): 84 Common reasons for not finishing: mechanical failures, injuries, mental reasoning. Miles in grizzly country: 1,000 Number of bear spray cans carried: 1 Estimated number of miles pushing a bike up unrideable terrain: 50 Percentage of above average snowpack in Montana: 170 Estimated amount of time post holing through unrideable snowy passes: 10 hours Planned number of hours in the saddle daily: 14 Planned number of hours sleeping each night in the woods: 6 Estimated calories burned daily: 8,000-12,000 Estimated caloric intake daily: 4,000-5,000 Estimated weight loss: 15+ lbs.
