My story!

Imarried Huda on June 22nd. I was very happy with her. I photograph humanitarian issues for the world. The war started and we were exposed to a deadly attack that we miraculously survived.

We became homeless, without food or drink. My wife was crying. I set up my tent for the first time after displacement on November 1st. We sought refuge with all the relief organizations, but no one helped me. We are now awaiting the birth of our first child after a long wait. Huda is pregnant... I tried to search for safety by any means, for me, my wife Huda, and our eagerly awaiting son, Malek! 😭

We were surprised by the new displacement and the terrifying sight of the bombing. We lost everything we owned for the second time, we took refuge in Rafah, I tried in every way to provide healthy food for my wife and our expectant child, but we were surprised for the third time by a major attack that made us leave without any food or shelter, Huda is eight months pregnant and we were displaced for the fifth time, this time is the worst, Huda and I stayed for five days sleeping on the burning sand of the sea. We did not taste food for five days, 💔

Have you read the fic Squire of the Wash? It’s where instead of becoming Star’s squire Star never learned the dangers of the wash and Marco has to make it through the trial on his own and becomes Lavabo’s squire. It hasn’t updated in a while but it’s a good fic!

NGL some of these people I don’t even remember the fandoms we shared but we’re still mutuals regardless. ✌️

Not people saying “Fandom has always been like this” in that vent post I made. No. It hasn’t always been like this. Fandom has NEVER been like this until recently and if you were in fandom pre-tumblr purge, pre-twitter, pre-netflix boom, pre-tiktok….then you would fucking know it was nothing like this.

We still had the drive to create. We still sold prints and charms and made zines…but it was never like this.

The introduction of streaming, binge shows that drop all at once, tiktok and vine RIP i still love u vine but you were the beginning of a particularly ugly era) creating this bite sized, quick paced ‘content’ era of creation and it bled out into fucking everything else.

Fandoms didn’t die down when the show ended or the season was over. You didn’t mass unfollow artist, writers or moots just because they changed fandoms. There wasn’t this need to please the algorithm in order for your posts to get seen by people and enjoyed.

Fandoms used to last YEARS. Star Trek is literally the oldest running fandom out there and you got people in there that could care less about the new stuff and still have been happily prancing through their fucking fifty year old fandom today. Hell, even SPN after all it’s fuckups and shitshows has a dedicated fanbase STILL creating tons of art and fic.

There is no patience anymore. No calm feeling of taking in fandom and friends at a pace that which doesn’t make you stressed and is still fun.

Do I blame fandom for this? Of course not, but people are complacent with it and start changing their vocab to accommodate and end up making the situation so deep it cant be fixed.

We call Art & Fic Content now, completely stripping the value of what it is to a level of consumerism instead of personal entertainment & community bonding.

I've talked before about the different levels of worldbuilding and how I often see issues in what I call "operational" worldbuilding--what organizations (governments, militaries, companies, etc.) do, what they're like, how they're run, etc.--and I think that this is where worldbuilding tends to most immediately fall apart.

I think that this is where there is most often tension between the aesthetics of what an author wants to write and the reality of what the author is trying to write.

As an example, I just saw a series where there is a rich elite fae school--that trains assassins.

Clearly the rich elite part is the aesthetic of what the author wants to write, but having a school that openly* trains assassins removes one of the biggest advantage that assassins have (people don't know their identity as an assassin).

A lot of books with a trial/competition setup run into similar problems: the author wants the aesthetics of a competition setup but hasn't created a world that would warrant or lead to that. And/or, it will be a competition to the death where many of the competitors are politically or socially important people like heirs to major positions, where having them die is actually extremely disadvantageous and would likely never have been realistically established as a solution.

Any sort of military "training" that has an intentionally high death rate also ends up feeling similarly discordant. It's not really useful for militaries to spend a ton of money/resources training people if they're going to kill them before they reach the battlefield.

Obviously there can be explanations for these sorts of discrepancies, but often the stories don't give them (or don't give good ones, at least), relying primarily or entirely on the aesthetics to get by.

*I can't actually tell if they openly train them from just the summary, and I'm not going to read the books, so I'm making an assumption here.

most recent windows 11 update is wiping SSDs

there's been multiple reports of people's computers not booting properly after the windows 11 24H2 KB5063878 update due to it essentially wiping the hard drives (specifically SSDs) on computers and laptops. users have reported their SSDs aren't able to be read/recognized and unable to be seen in bios settings either.

it's safe to assume all SSDs can be potentially affected by this update, so if you haven't updated yet turn off autoupdates

the bug caused by this update is seemingly triggered by installing/moving/deleting large files (50+ gb), which as simmers is what a lot of us do very pften

if you're unsure what windows version you currently have:

go to settings > system > about (at they very bottom) > and scroll down to see the current OS version

if you do currently have windows 11 24H2:

in settings, click 'Windows update' > 'Update history' > and under 'Quality Updates' check to see if the KB5063878 update is in the list of recently installed updates

don't panic, you can uninstall this update!

while in 'Update History', scroll to the very bottom and click 'Uninstall updates', and click 'Uninstall' for 'Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB5063878)'

from there, give it some time to remove the update and after pause updates for as long as possible (5 weeks is the longest i think), but it will force an update if there's a big/official update for the fix

if you've already been affected and your computer is not starting or giving errors regarding your hard drive, i recommend visiting small pc repair shops to try data recovery as some have reported placing their SSD in an enclosure seems to work to recover the data

hopefully this is helpful is any kind of way! friendly reminder to back up your data to an external drive routinely!
