I was the flower child,

picking dandelions

and turning grass into

an instrument

while the other children

ran wildly around me—

an obstacle in their field.

Asthmatic and out-of-shape.

Now, I cut the flowers grown

around my yard and wonder

how that little girl

grew up to be an

athelete

(with intense imposter syndrome).

I’ve lifted weights beyond my own poundage.

I’ve jogged up hills and along lakes.

I’ve hiked up mountains

where the air is thinning, my lungs constricting.

I’ve doubted myself, failed and floundered,

But ultimately, I’ve conquered the feelings
