thinking about how andre rarely received outward expressions of love.

his parents, at least his dad, almost never said he loved him or that he was proud of him. his father finally said he was proud of andre only days before the boy died.

sure, his mother loved him. she gave him hugs and kisses, but she never outwardly said she cared for him. she hoped her actions showed her feelings enough. she regrets her decisions every day after his death.

he kept a note that a girl wrote him in middle school, knowing that he would most likely never get a gift like that again. no one would ever compliment him like that so blatantly. even cal danced carefully around true praise.

all andre wanted was someone to love him, someone to stop his spiral into loneliness. he loved so hard but seldom received anything in return.

What a beautiful contrast it is... the prayer beads curling around Cal’s wrist as his finger curls around the trigger. Crystal clinks against wood — sacred, trembling — the threaded cord slick with tension, sliding down his arm one final time as the shot rings out.

Zero Day Personality Type Analysis (Color Edition)

Okay so I made a poll asking what colors other people associated Cal and Andre with… and as I suspected, more people voted that Andre is red and Cal is blue. To me, this is a totally reasonable assumption and I don’t really think there’s a Wrong answer, They’re fictional characters and fandom is supposed to be fun. But it’s not my opinion so now I have to be annoying and talk about it because I LOVE yapping. So if any of you care, here’s my analysis of their color personality types.

Andre is Blue! I guess if we are being really specific, he’s a very navy/royal blue. Something deep and vivid and emotion evoking.

Color psychology suggests that people with blue personality types are introverted, task oriented, and thinkers. They’re a “let’s do it right” group of people. They can be analytical and logical, idealistic, and perfectionist.

These are all very obvious traits we see in Andre’s character. He has a complex vision for exactly how Zero Day will pan out and how things will happen afterwards. He almost seems to live outside of reality when making his plans, not allowing room for things to go wrong or creating backup plans.

The negative aspects associated with a blue type personality are an inability to think on their feet, uncomfortable in chaotic and stressful environments, and overly critical of themselves and others.

I think we kind of see this a lot actually during Zero Day itself, but Heavily in one instance outside of the big mission. All of their little missions go exactly to plan besides one; Cal’s Poem scene. He seems stressed from the get-go about Cal’s lack of explanation. He asks him why he’s dressed the way he is and asks questions the entire time they’re sitting in the audience. After his poem, he flips out, even having a major outburst in the car. That’s the first and only time we really see him react aggressively/passionately to stress in particular.

During Zero Day, it’s very obvious that Cal is way more into it than Andre is. Andre views it like a mission, as a solider carrying out a specific set of tasks. He has some fuck ass things to say, calling himself God and screaming into the phone… but he’s not nearly as trigger happy and energetic about it as Cal is. And the one time he really is, he’s immediately corrected and pushed forward by Cal.

Blue personality types are also the Loyal Leaders. They value trust and the ability to trust others severely when it comes to relationships. They tend to view the world around them as hostile and like to feel extremely secure with the people they keep around them. This can make them extremely controlling, needing their circle to have the ability to conform to their ideas, plans, and values to ensure that nothing really pushed them out of their comfort zone. Once they form a relationship, it’s next to impossible to sever without extreme circumstances of “disobedience” or “trust betrayal”.

Cal, however, is Red! In general, he’s a pretty complex and inconsistent sort of character. Where we see Andre react in pretty predictable ways and his interactions with other people, when we see them, are generally consistent… Cal has a wide range of character traits. We see him quiet, loud, angry, nervous, playful, alone, and with other people. He acts a little out of the ordinary, visible in scenes like his poem and how he makes Andre drive afterwords.

Red personalities are described as creative and spontaneous. They are passionate and straightforward. They have a need for quick action and don’t really enjoy delay or waiting.

When positive, red personality types are dynamic. They have a need to feel in charge and have the ability to adapt to their surroundings to keep themselves feeling in control of a situation. This often leads to subconscious (or conscious) manipulation as it’s driven by a goal. Andre doesn’t have the need to “fool people” per say, the way Cal does. He is not shown interacting with many people his own age and it’s implied that this is because nobody likes him. I wouldn’t call Cal extroverted by any means, but he has a chameleon like ability to blend into crowds. He did have people fooled, down to the end… where despite his aggression and violence, he’s seen as someone innocent and manipulated.

Cal lacks the ability to be meticulous in planning the way Andre is. Andre comes up with the idea of locking the tapes up, Andre planned their missions, Andre is the talker and the front man, but Cal doesn’t agree with the idea of him being his Leader. He views them on equal playing fields, a team. There’s a patience that Andre possesses that Cal doesn’t have. The second they stopped moving, he yelled at Andre until they moved. He coaxed Andre into ending Zero Day the way that they did.

I think a lot of his core personality traits get looked over because he’s depressed, honestly. He doesn’t seem to match the anger and passion that Andre has until Zero Day, when he surpasses it. He’s incredibly observant, sitting behind the camera. In a sense, he guides our story. It only happens when he records, a silent director for the film.

Another red trait he expresses is his utter inability to SHUT HIS DAMN MOUTH. Andre is the thinker, overthinking at some points, and leads with an intellectual thought process. Cal shoots off at the mouth every thought he has. Shoot first, ask questions later. Red is about wild creativity rather than intellectual creativity. Andre has life progressing hobbies: track, science club, engineering major. Cal plays in the band, which while it can be life progressing, that doesn’t seem to be the case here.

I think he possesses all the main Red characteristics: passion, aggression, impulsiveness, creativity, fast paced, and pragmatic… but we can lose them to his withdrawal. It’s clear he’s depressed and it affects the way he acts. He canonically uses mind/emotion altering substances. But there are several instances when we see them. Zero Day itself being the main one. He simply wants to hurt people and then die, whereas Andre wants to make a point and leave a mark.

Zero Day Headcanons (hobbies and interests edition)

As per usual, influenced by me and my roommate… cringe

⌖ Cal canonically plays the guitar and the sitar, but he definitely can play more. He was one thousand percent a choir boy when he was younger and picked up piano. He’s good at recognizing patterns and can pick up tunes and rhythms by ear.

⌖ Andre secretly likes really old musicals (sound of music, guys and dolls, singin’ in the rain, ect.)

⌖ Cal loves drawing and writing and has tons of unfinished journals filled with poetry, art, and short stories he came up with to avoid things he probably should have been doing instead.

⌖ Andre loves sci-fi movies. Especially horror sci-fi / comedy sci-fi.. not so much like Star Wars (which he has definitely seen) but Alien, The Matrix, Reanimator, Weird Science, Independence Day, Frankenhooker. He likes movies campy or scary, bonus points if they’re both.

⌖ Cal loves horror movies and has an obnoxious amount of cd’s he’s bought from various garage sales and video stores going out of business. His favorite movie of all time is Idle Hands and has seen it a depressing amount of times.

⌖ They are huge gamers, especially out of highschool. They’re the type to camp outside of malls for new console releases and have weekend marathons where Andre takes off of work to spend a full 72 hours playing a game together. They’re both extremely competitive though so when they can’t work together, they spend most of the time fighting with each other rather than making progress on the game.

⌖ Andre stays active outside of track and enjoys taking advantage of walks around campus/downtown, local gym equipment, and even occasionally hikes or takes jogs through the park.

Sometimes he makes Cal go with him on jogs and they’ve discovered that, given the right circumstances, he’s both incredibly fast and has impressive stamina for someone who doesn’t work out or run really. (Andre thought it would be funny to chase him through the woods and lost him because Cal fucking disappeared and didn’t stop until he was back at the car.)

⌖ Cal really enjoys doing things with his hands and finds himself lost in activities that keep his hands busy for hours. He cycles through them like nobody’s business.

Some he’s collected are bracelet making (leather and those knotted friendship bracelets), origami, miniature figure painting (they had a dnd phase), lock picking, legos, and gardening.

Gardening came out of left field and was inspired by his wonderful idea to try and grow several illegal plants from the comfort of their apartment.

⌖ They drive hours and camp out in their car to attend music festivals all around their area. They can’t afford to go often, but when they do, they make a big deal out of it and purchase the best tickets available and have the best time they possibly can.

⌖ Andre got sad about leaving Mel behind so they adopted a stray cat together. She runs between their rooms at night so she can sleep with both of them. Despite Cal being around more, she seems to have a preference for Andre when he’s available. She curls up in his lap over Cal’s, rubs on his legs every chance she gets, and always approaches him first when she sees them.

⌖ There’s pretty much always some external stimuli happening in their apartment. They have the tv going or music playing almost 24/7. Neither of them are big fans of quiet, especially if home alone.

Working and all I can think about is caldre platonic affection….

Andre taking note on Cal’s oral hygiene products/routine so he can keep spares under his sink for when Cal inevitably forgets to bring them over. Andre snatching an extra little goody bag the dentists send home with you so he never runs out

Cal loaning Andre tee shirts from the back of his closet that he “never wears” and purposely forgets to ask for it back.

Andre calling Cal’s home phone from his job’s phone to ask if he wants any food before they throw everything out for the night.

Cal hanging around at the very end of the bleachers while Andre’s at track practice. Cal screaming the loudest when a race starts because it embarrasses him.

Alternatively, Andre sitting front and center at band concerts. Andre clapping loud as hell, hollering obnoxiously at the end of sets. Cal usually gets in trouble for that, but they both find it funny.

Cal leaving tapes and cd’s he made in Andre’s glove box so he never runs out of music when he’s doing delivery.

Andre swapping homework with Cal ten minutes before class so he doesn’t get a mark off when he forgets to do it.

Cal standing in front of Andre’s locker while he gets things out so nobody shoves him into it. (Andre is a locker user, Cal is a backpack carrier)

Neither of their parents even wait to hear “can … come?” Anymore, they just account for an extra kid on family trips / events.

They’ve had two vacations each every summer since they met and both family’s have a habit of just setting an extra plate at the table since they’re together so often.
