Svemir Pavić's portrait of surrealist painter Ljuba Popović, made in the same year as its counterpart by Walerian Borowczyk, features scenes form Beaubourg Gallery in Paris and Udo Kier as a guest. Side B of the record is all about theatre: plays by Sam Shepard, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Jean Giraudoux were all produced in Sarajevo and Split in the 1980s, with the rare electronic takes by Mirko Krstičević and his subtle minimalist soundings of the themes from the Cold War era. This unique and diverse compositions by founder of the rock band Metak and sound studio Tetrapak from Split, are document of the time that is, especially in the closing Chernobyl theme, relevant again.

★ Coined by the famed film theorist Georges Sadoul at the 1959 Cannes Festival, The Zagreb School of Animated Film(s) or The Zagreb School of Animation, was defined as an artistic and philosophical world-view that set its mark on the history of animation in the 60s and 70s. The key feature of the Zagreb School (not educational facility in any kind), was commitment to stylisation in contrast with the Disney-style canon of realistic animation.
Tumblr media
★ Among many composers that worked in Zagreb Film productions, the name of Tomislav Simović (1931 – 2014) stands out. In his oeuvre of 300+ film scores (not counting compositions and arrangements for pop singers and jazz orchestras), many were made exclusively for Zagreb film documentaries, fiction shorts, features and animation. Simovic was particularly adept at writing music for cartoons. He skillfully synchronized movement and sound and mixed different musical genres, although, like his peers at the time, he leaned towards jazz.

(FOX010LP) TOMISLAV SIMOVIĆ - PROFESSOR BALTHAZAR (MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL TV SERIES) LP
Tumblr media
Original soundtrack from the animated TV series 'Professor Balthazar' (1967 - 1978) by Tomislav Simovic. Master tapes were considered lost; now found and restored for this unique release celebrating Yugoslavia's biggest cartoon export of the times.
★ From the Original Master Tapes. ★ Vinyl Gatefold LP ★ Liner Notes ★ Exclusive Artwork by Boris Stapic ★ Standard Edition + Limited Edition with 16-page Booklet
Tumblr media
★ Professor Balthazar is a Croatian / Yugoslav animated series filmed from 1967 to 1978 in Zagreb. The series consists of 59 standalone episodes lasting five to ten minutes, divided into 4 seasons. It was a huge international success: from large fan base in Scandinavia to broadcasting on USA television and countries like Germany, Italy, France and even Iran. It still airs on various TV programs and video platforms. ★
★ Animation style and content is widely praised for being one of the rare cartoons that does not feature any kind of violence or aggression. The character of Professor Balthazar solves problems in a peaceful way. He uses his inventions and science to help his friends. Distinctive visual influence is a crossover of bright, psychedelic colors, weird shapes and naive art, typical for Zagreb School of Animated Film. ★
Tumblr media
★ This soundtrack is mastered from original tapes, composed and conducted by Tomislav Simovic. The music is busy, playful and mixes influences of jazz, classical and even electronica. Fox & His Friends Records, also the curators of the largest ever multimedia exhibition on Professor Balthazar series in Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka as a part of the European Capital of Culture program in 2020, chose for music themes and recordings on this album to be untouched and unaltered. The masters from the 1960's aged well, but sign of the time is present and recording techniques are varied. ★
★ This album cut includes longer rare version of main credits, made exclusively for Zagrebfilmijada, an event of public screenings of Professor Balthazar and other cartoons in cinemas in 1970s Yugoslavia. ★

(FOX009LP) NENAD VILOVIĆ - PRIZMA (UNRELEASED SYNTH SPACE SESSIONS FROM SPLIT 1985) LP
Tumblr media
★ Unreleased space synth sessions from Split,  Yugoslavia, 1985. ★ From the original master tapes. ★ Vinyl Gatefold LP ★ Liner Notes ★ Exclusive Artwork & Design by Eric Adrian Lee  ★ DMM cut by Pauler Acoustics ★ Mastering by Antony Ryan (RedRedPaw) ★ Limited Edition ★ No repress ★
Tumblr media
Deluxe limited edition vinyl LP of the unpublished Nenad Vilović lost synth-masterpiece Prizma. The Yugoslavian and Croatian disco and pop chart-maker and once a Split International Music Festival headman (also in groups Grupa ST, Mladi Batali, etc.), producer of Dino Dvornik, Ambasadori, Oliver Dragojević, Meri Cetinić, Leo Martin and many more, recorded this space-prog-electronica album in complete secrecy. ★  It was refused in the 1980s by all major Yugoslavian record labels for being too experimental, but it is actually a game changer in the field of socialist YU electronica. Miha Kralj, Laza Ristovski, Igor Savin and Kornelije Kovač now have company in the field of complex analog synthesizer concept albums, with this one being finally released by Fox & His Friends Records after 37 years of being shelved. Every instrument on this album has been played by Vilović himself. This rare piece of vinyl is cut by Pauler Acoustics, mastered by Antony Ryan and features exclusive cover design by Eric Adrian Lee.
Tumblr media
In the golden era of pop music in Yugoslavia, city of Split had a special place. The Adriatic Sea, nearing Italian radio stations and the famous San Remo music festival that influenced almost everything, from fashion, lifestyle to music. It's local counterpart was The Split Pop Music Festival since the 1960s, international at first and lasting even till now. Our hero was in the organizational leadership at the end of the 1990s and attracted much public disapproval while selecting the tunes for the competition: he resolutely refused to include what he considered old-fashion songs. Nenad Vilović fiercely wanted the Split Festival and music scene to modernize, in order to appeal to the younger audiences and to reach the charts and dance-floors. As the sound of the time regarding his requirements was predominately electronic, the ‘traditionalists’ hated him.
Tumblr media
It was not the first time Nenad Vilović (often under the names ST or Nenad Vilović & Grupa ST) clashed with the keepers of tradition. Long before he managed Split Festival, many of his songs and productions won the awards of the popular vote and became high-selling singles. However, critics smashed his efforts, calling him a commercial sell-out and even the local term was forged especially for him: ‘čekićanje’ and ‘kovačija’, meaning ‘hammering’ and ‘blacksmithing’ of the songs that introduced 4/4 beat. It was Vilović’s love of dance culture and disco, catchy melodies and fun lyrics that his opponents and critics took as a final proof that this guy is making empty and shallow pop music.
Tumblr media
Nenad Vilović has enjoyed quite of success; produced, composed and arranged for numerous artists and himself as well; been in several groups starting the legendary Mladi Batali and released singles and LPs for some of the largest companies in Yugoslavia: Jugoton, PGP RTB and Diskoton. But, as he jokingly said when Leri Ahel and Željko Luketić first met him in his studio: I was all ‘kovačija’, they said! Then he played us the main theme of an album that was shelved for a staggering 37 years, luscious and layered synth-prog piece called “Introduction to The Prism”. Amazing! The tape was played once in the 80s to a local music critic who said “oh, you CAN make quality music!”, but it was still rejected by a major labels for being “too experimental”.
Tumblr media
The studio master is here presented in its entirety; no track was replaced or changed its side or order. This is how it was imagined to be released in 1985, when Nenad Vilović played all instruments, produced, composed, arranged, recorded and even sang on the whole thing. However the title “Prizma” may suggest, this is not a structuralist concept album, but a conceptual use of his studio, instruments and musical knowledge. It mixes the ethnic, electronic, geographical and ambient roots of the crowned festival producer, hit-maker and fast-skilled studio musician who spent all of his money on new machines and his musical progress.
Tumblr media
Composed, arranged, produced, recorded & all instruments played by Nenad Vilović. Recorded in 1985 at Vilović Studio (NV), Split, Yugoslavia (Croatia). Vocals by Nenad Vilović.
Real time recording and mixing via 24-track 3M M79 reel-to-reel. No computers and no sequencers were used. ★ Instruments: Violin, Viola, Keyboards (Yamaha Piano, Fender Rhodes Piano, Prophet 2000, Crumar Performer, Ace Tone Canary Organ, Korg CX-3, Polymoog, ARP Omni-2), Effects (Eventide Harmonizer H949, Iskra Signal Generator MA3731), Guitars (Acoustic, Les Paul Gibson, Ovation Matrix, Fender Jaguar, Klira), Clarinet, Soprano Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Ocarina, Drums (Ludwig, Sonor), Fender Bass Guitar, Gibson L9-S Ripper, Gibson SG, Claves, Remo Rototom, Tambourine, Mandola, Triangle, Bells, Conga, Castanets, Shakers.

(FOX008LP) ALFI KABILJO - YU AEROBIC (ORIGINAL WORKOUT MUSIC FROM YUGOSLAVIA 1981-1984) LP

Tumblr media
★ Unreleased instrumental versions from the original master tapes. ★ A collection of 1980's music for aerobics and fitness craze in Yugoslavia inspired by Jane Fonda ★
The phenomena of exercise tapes and albums started officially in Yugoslavia in 1983, Jane Fonda’s book was heavily promoted and published in local edition. Famous actress Milena Dravić released Aerobika Sa Milenom Dravić cassette for RTV Ljubljana and Sarajevo choreographer Gordana Magaš released Aerobik Ples: Pokrenimo se malo!. They were classical instructional tapes with voice-over and international disco or chart hits in the playlist. But Vesna Mimica, who perfected her art with Sylvie Vartan in Paris and Alfi Kabiljo, famous Croatian composer, had more original and serious take on fitness albums in the same year. Cassettes YU Aerobic Br.1 and YU Aerobic Br.2 were released as a series divided in sections (first one for beginners, the other for the advanced users) and much more importantly, they did not use international cover songs, but used conceptual and original music, intentionally made for fitness and aerobics. Backed up by Jugoton label, the largest and most influential in country, the tapes sold extremely well, making Vesna Mimica a star and a synonym for modern dance, aerobics and fitness. The press called her “our Jane Fonda” and she wore that feminist and activist badge with pride and vigour, making her Dance Studio VEM active in years to come, while also building her respective career in journalism, specializing in performing arts and culture.
Tumblr media
But the musical genius behind Vesna Mimica’s Aerobics series was Alfi Kabiljo, already a successful composer (also a conductor, arranger, piano player, lyrics and libretto writer and producer) in the variety of genres in Yugoslavia and all over the world. He has recorded in Barcelona, Vienna, London (Pinewood and Twickenham), Los Angeles (Hollywood), Ljubljana, Madrid, Paris, Tokyo and most of all in Zagreb.  He has written the music for more than 30 feature films and over a hundred television episodes. Numerous popular songs and chansons have been recorded worldwide, he has taken part in and won prizes at popular music festivals at home and abroad, including Zagreb, Split and Opatija, then Rio de Janeiro, Tel Aviv, Malta, Seoul, Palma de Mallorca, Cairo, Athens, Caracas, Mexico City and much more. His lesser known passion is for applied and library music. The Vesna Mimica tapes were a bold and unusual step in his career: that kind of applied music was usually hidden in biographies of other composers. They probably considered it artistically irrelevant due to a predefined use, but Alfi Kabiljo never agreed on that, he treated all of his compositions with the same pride.
Tumblr media
Fox & His Friends Records team is on the same path: all music should be in an equal opportunity for the aesthetic judgement and should not be forgotten for its back story, purpose or use. The rise of library music appreciation in recent years shows that we are right and more and more hidden gems are being re-discovered and re-evaluated. Such are the selections from the surviving studio masters from the Aerobics era, which we chose to present in their original form without the instructional dubbing and voice-over. That does not mean we do not like Vesna Mimica’s sporty fitness lines (we do!), but in this instrumental form, which was never released and aired publicly, Alfi Kabiljo’s precise jazz and disco mixture of melodies and beats turns out to be still fresh and dance friendly. You can enjoy this rare treat even more and be your own Vesna Mimica while exercising to it. So, just work it left, right, left, right, left, right and breeeathe...

(FOX007LP) VA - VISITORS FROM THE GALAXY REVISITED (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK BY TOMISLAV SIMOVIC REMIXED)
Tumblr media
// 2 x LP Vinyl // Limited Edition // Color Gatefold Double Sleeve // Exclusive Japanese Style OBI Strip // Liner Notes // Unseen Photographs from 1981 Cult Sci-Fi Film // Remixes by 11 Artists from 9 Countries // Over 75 Minutes of Contemporary Electronic Music //
Tumblr media
Oscar winning director Dusan Vukotic made first science-fiction film in Yugoslavia in 1981. While receiving a modest critical reception at the date of release, „Visitors from the Galaxy“ gained a huge response from the audience which culminated in recent years with a proper and growing cult following. The groundbreaking electronic soundtrack by composer Tomislav Simovic was also first in its own genre: never before the complete score was done entirely using electronic equipment in a combination of melodic and experimental style. Croatian label Fox & His Friends Records released restored edition of original score five years ago. It was their debut on the label scene and marked their journey on a discovery of long forgotten and lost classics.
Tumblr media
As a tribute to a composer Tomislav Simovic, who also did worldwide known Professor Balthazar cartoon series score and more than 300 other films, the Fox & His Friends label bosses Leri Ahel (Mutant Disco Radio Show) and Zeljko Luketic (film and music critic and curator) decided to call the best of contemporary musicians to do their reworkings, remixes and reinventions of the Simovic original. Every artist, 11 of them from 9 countries, answered with a firm “It’s a yes from me!” and embarked on musical journey that included not only original soundtrack from “Visitors from the Galaxy”, but also additional sounds from the Tomislav Simovic sound archive used in Vukotic film. The result is amazing collection of 13 musical pieces that go to a variety of electronic genres: IDM, techno, acid, leftfield and ambient. More importantly, the new collection of reworkings called “Visitors from the Galaxy Revisited”, plays as a compact whole in its entirety. It works on different levels – as a soundtrack album, a DJ friendly clubbing wax and album for home listening full of unexpected sound twists and sonic surprises. This is truly a genre breaker that can make your home a club or your club a distant planet in a strange East European sci-fi cult classic.
Tumblr media
Thanks to the involved artists Fox & His Friends Records continue to break the rules and receive, as composer Tomislav Simovic and director Dusan Vukotic already did, a tribute to the hard work of finding, restoring and releasing the hidden gems from the history of ex-Yugoslavian music. Alen & Nenad Sinkauz (Croatia), Ali Renault (United Kingdom), Anatolian Weapons (Greece), Credit 00 (Germany), Drvg Cvltvre (Netherlands), Goran Vejvoda (France / USA), Heinrich Dressel (Italy), Repeated Viewing (United Kingdom), Security DJ (France), Tapan (Serbia) and Timothy Fife (USA) spared no time and their talent to pay a homage to Tomislav Simovic in a truly unique way of new analogue, abstract, electronic and synthesized dance floor friendly music. Similar compilations are rare: Steve Reich, Ennio Morricone and Peter Thomas Orchestra are some of the most famous ones who received similar treatment, making this mammoth project worth attention and careful listening. Tomislav Simovic, who sadly died in 2014, is also the first composer from ex-Yugoslavia region to be recognised among contemporary international electronic musicians as someone to be inspired with.
Tumblr media

(FOX006LP) THE MASTER SCRATCH BAND - THE BREAKWAR (CASSETTE REISSUE WITH BONUS TRACKS)
Tumblr media
THE MASTER SCRATCH BAND THE BREAKWAR LP 1984 CASSETTE REISSUE WITH BONUS TRACKS Remastered, limited edition, gatefold LP, extensive liner notes and bonus tracks. BUY HERE!
The Master Scratch Band was first break-dance / hip-hop / electro funk band in Yugoslavia released and signed by major label in 1984. The band members were Zoran Vračević, Zoran Jevtić and Milutin Stoisiljević, previously known as Data (Goran Marinković, Zoran Jevtić, Zoran Vračević) and Šizike (Goran Marinković, Jasmina Branković, Jasna Dimitrijević, Ljiljana Dimitrijević, Milutin Stoisiljević, Zoran Jevtić, Zoran Vračević).
Jugoton, the biggest label in Yugoslavia, published Data 7'' and MSB's 'Dégout' 12'' with limited edition cassette containing two bonus tracks. Impossible to find on the collectors market, Fox & His Friends team in collaboration with Jugoton / Croatia Records is releasing a full, complete version of the rare "The Breakwar" tape, with tracks "Tonight" and "Pocket" never pressed on vinyl. All tracks are sourced from original studio tapes. With the kind help of Zoran Vračević on credit list and liner notes, this is now the ultimate Master Scratch Band album, released originally in a year when break-dance was in the peak of its popularity in Yugoslavia.
Tumblr media
While Data was synthpop, Šizike mellow synth-disco recorded in private studio, this release is pure breaks and hip-hop electro, done old-school way in one of the best studios in Yugoslavia, Enco Lesić's Druga maca in Belgrade. MSB used impressive electronic gear and were helped by huge list of famous musicians and guests: Dubravka Duca Marković from hit-show 'Hit meseca' (Yugoslavian Top Of The Pops); Japanac on bass, Max Vincent from Max & Intro on synths, Dudu Vudu from Du-Du-A, Goranka Matić as photographer and many more. MSB sampling technique and choices are unique: from obscure industrial records to freestyle; from found-sounds to cut-up breaks and even real prank-calls.
Tumblr media
This is document of time that still sounds fresh and needs to find it's new, young audience of hip-hop history researchers, break-dancers, b-boys, b-girls and DJ's. When you know that it's produced in 1984 Yugoslavia, far away, but actually, so close to its USA brothers and sisters, it's even more mind-boggling. Thanks to Fox & His Friends and Jugoton CR collaboration, this gem is waiting for your freezes, footwork and electric boogie moves.

(FOX005LP) NEP - POP NOT POP (SONGS FOR NEW EUROPE 1985-1989) Limited Edition; Gatefold LP; Gift Graphic Cards
Tumblr media
Limited edition, gatefold LP, extensive liner notes and bonus original graphic card by NEP on all BIG CARTEL orders! BUY HERE!
NEP was a loose multimedia collective formed in 1982 Zagreb, ex-Yugoslavia. The founder Dejan Krsic collaborated with various artists in a quest of re-thinking the stale concepts of art history, position of the author and the barriers between pop and elitist high culture. Heavily influenced by Walter Benjamin and Andy Warhol in theory and Brian Eno and Kraftwerk in music, Krsic created NEP as an umbrella term (meaning Nova Evropa or New Europe) of diverse rule-breaking activities, covering graphic design, music, photography, video, news-media and theoretical work.
Musically NEP focused on experiments in ambient and tape-music, self-released and hard to find compilation tapes like “The Cassette Played Poptones” (1988). Deeply immersed in pop-culture, politics and art theory Krsic’s search for perfect pop music with cutting critical edge peaked in 1989, the year 'Decadance' track was conceived in studio. Fox & His Friends published the single in 2017 with Snuffo Remix on B-side. It received rave reviews in music press like MixMag and DJ Mag and it is still played on dance-floors around the world. But the story around the NEP is musically (as well as artistically) much wider: for the first time Fox & His Friends team compiles best cuts from unreleased and rare NEP tapes, covering the period from 1985 to 1989 on POP NOT POP abum .
Tumblr media
Dejan Krsic is now famous graphic designer and art historian in Croatia. Other collaborators include Laibach and Borghesia photographer Jane Stravs , artist and TV director Gordana Brzovic, Jovan Culibrk, now Bishop at The Serbian Orthodox Church and Anja Rupel, singer of cult Yugoslavian synth-pop group Videosex as well as the other members of Videosex, Iztok Turk and Janez Krizaj who produced some of the tracks. Other collaborators were talented producers Robert Logozar and Davor Daga Devcic , singers Linda Cooper, Natalija, Alexx Kovacs ... The list of collaborations is long.
Some of the memorable moments on POP NOT POP album are early demo version of Decadance aka 'How Do I Dance To This Music?' with blue movies samples and drum machine experiments like early Cabaret Voltaire , then Krsic's reinterpretation of legendary Trans Europe Express anthem as 'Transcendance', or 'Radical Chic', where Dejan himself and Anja Rupel from Videosex make lovely couple of dandy-esque fashionistas, singing chart-friendly radio synthpop tune that contrasts the A-side (the 'NOT POP' side) - full of experiments, dark wave and industrial nods to Test Department and Cabs . B-side is 'THE POP' side that will surprise most of the NEP followers from their early experimental cassette days. Sunny, danceable, joyfull pop that reveals the many faces of NEP.
Tumblr media
As Kraftwerk today is more of a concept than a band, NEP does the same by re-writing its products (musical, graphical, theoretical, activist) and constantly puts them in permanent state of change or re-mix. In the future, only NEP logo will be enough to consider something an art piece, and NEP will be everybody who wants to, as their Art Manifest claims. Until that day comes, ‘POP NOT POP’ is a document of how the vivid and creative were art-scenes in socialist Yugoslavia. Some of the graphic work, cut-ups from theory and Manifesto are also included on this LP, designed by Dejan Krsic aka NEP himself. This release is made from the original master tapes and published for the first time on vinyl.

(FOX004LP) ALFI KABILJO: SEX, CRIME & POLITICS - Cinematic Disco, Jazz & Electronica from Yugoslavia 1974-1984 (Limited Edition) (Gatefold LP)
Tumblr media
Six vintage cinema classics scored by famous BAFTA nominated Croatian composer Alfi Kabiljo are compiled here for the first time in one album. Films include first feature soft-porn in Yugoslavia (Honeymoon / Medeni mjesec), genre gems like Journalist and Deps and many more. A subtle musical drive into 70's Zagreb night clubs, smokey bars and shady characters from the other side of law. Journalists, gangsters, politicians, diplomats and ladies of the night make this disco, funk and jazz themes well-suited socialist version of Bernard Herrmann's Taxi Driver.
All tracks are transferred from the original master tapes, selected and programmed by Fox & His Friends owners Leri Ahel and Zeljko Luketic.
Full color, gatefold LP is out December 23, 2019.  BUY HERE!

Tumblr media
At the time of the release of this record, Alfi Kabiljo will be celebrating his 84th birthday. One might think that this can be an occasion to slow down and reflect on the past, as many of his colleagues would do, but this certainly does not apply to versatile and busy Croatian composer. He is still working, writing music, conducting, arranging and above all enjoying his craft and life. His opus involves music for over 50 films, 100 TV episodes, numerous commercials, theatre productions and easy listening pop music. His nickname in Yugoslavia, now in Croatia, is still “The King Of Musical” with “Jalta, Jalta” (1971) being the record breaking success all over the world. Helping the careers of pop stars like Radojka Šverko, Tereza Kesovija, Ana Štefok and Vice Vukov, Alfi travelled, conducted and performed his music all over the world, from Japan to America.
Kabiljo's pioneering work with synthesizers led him to be a first composer in Yugoslavia to play with expensive Fairlight CMI machine in the 1980s and to have The National Philharmonic Orchestra in London available for recording sessions (Sky Bandits, BAFTA nomination). In this selection of mostly unreleased film scores, we focused on his love of classic disco beat, combined with funk, jazz and lush orchestrations, typical for the shady Zagreb nights, populated with unsolved crimes, worked up journalists and ladies of the ‘oldest trade’. One of the films, Honeymoon, labelled first soft-porn in Yugoslavia, caused scandal and critical backlash, but Kabiljo never seemed to bother with provincial labels or morals. The sum of six different films compiled here somehow override its parts and make the continuous flow of one completely new and imaginary film called Sex, Crime & Politics.

(FOX003LP) VA - Socialist Disco. Dancing Behind Yugoslavia's Velvet Curtain 1977-1987
Tumblr media
Was there a disco sound in ex-Yugoslavia? The beat, the bass, the big strings and outrageous outfits? Until this release, first of its kind to chart the unknown Non-Aligned disco territory, the American and European influenced dance tunes of the Saturday Night Fever era belonged only to most curious of the DJ’s and vinyl collectors. Leri Ahel (Mutant Disco Radio Show) and Zeljko Luketic (Electronic Jugoton, Ex Yu Electronica) curate this comprehensive anthology of lesser known seven inchers, B-sides and cassette only releases in Socialist Disco 2LP, a pioneering compilation that took 4 years to research, licence and finish in its final shape. Meticulous work included finding the best sounding original masters and clearing the rights for all featured songs.

18 tracks were chosen for the first instalment of the series that will put the completely different light on the movement that suffered the same destiny as Disco Demolition Night in America aggressively closed all doors to anything connected to the genre itself. In Yugoslavia it blended into dance pop and Italo Disco, but kept its peculiarity in the erotic innuendo of lyrics, inclusiveness on the dance-floor while loosening up the strict social rules of growing nightlife. This compilation features pin-up models and Miss Yugoslavia 1982 Ana Sasso trying to boogie, the famous soccer player Ivica Surjak doing strange excursions into music inferno and teen-stars skipping classes for USSR tours. On the more serious side, disco was also interesting to popular singers and musicians already selling hundreds of thousands of records and big orchestras and ensembles run by celebrated composers like Alfi Kabiljo, Arsen Dedic and Nikica Kalogjera. Curators and the owners of the Fox & His Friends label Ahel and Luketic also included some unexpected cover versions of Kim Wilde, Righeira and, not to be missed, Yugoslavian take on Gloria Gaynor’s queer-disco classic ‘I Will Survive’.
Tumblr media
‘Socialist Disco. Dancing Behind Yugoslavia's Velvet Curtain 1977-1987’ is released as gatefold 2 × LP limited edition. Contains rare disco tunes from KIM Band, Gabi Novak, Arian, Ljupka Dimitrovska, Ana Sasso, Moni Kovacic, Milka Lenac, Rok Hotel, Ivica Surjak, Grupa ST, Nano Prsa and many more. There will be no repress and is sold exclusively one copy per customer. NEP was a loose multimedia collective formed in 1982 Zagreb, ex-Yugoslavia. The founder Dejan Krsic collaborated with various artists in a quest of re-thinking the stale concepts of art history, position of the author and the barriers between pop and elitist high culture. Heavily influenced by Walter Benjamin and Andy Warhol in theory and Brian Eno and Kraftwerk in music, Krsic created NEP as an umbrella term (meaning Nova Evropa) of diverse rule-breaking activities, covering graphic design, music, photography, video, news-media and theoretical work. Musically NEP focused on experiments in ambient and tape-music, mostly self-released or hard to find compilations like “The Cassette Played Poptones” (1988). Deeply immersed in pop-culture, politics and art theory Krsic’s search for perfect pop music with cutting critical edge peaked in 1989, the year Decadance track was conceived in studio, but has never been published.
Tumblr media
Pumping Roland 808 beats, with sampled vocals from Linda Cooper asking herself “How do I dance to this music?” were chosen by Fox & His Friends label owners Leri Ahel and Zeljko Luketic for a 12” opener of the unknown NEP’s pop history. This single is a sneak-peak into the world of POP NOT POP, the album and a graphic book merged into one multimedia entity, to be released later this year. All material is restored and mastered from original reel-to-reel tapes and presented on wax for the first time and for this occasion, deconstructed and reinvented in a remix B-side by Snuffo, masked hero of the Snuff Crew fame. Snuffo splitted the title vocal into a new cut-up, now telling “Dance to this music” to its audiences. And indeed, NEP’s Decadance is meant to be danced to, either side you choose to play. NEP on this 1989 track was led by Dejan Krsic, now famous graphic designer and art historian in Croatia, but other collaborators include Laibach and Borghesia photographer Jane Stravs, artist and TV director Gordana Brzovic, Jovan Culibrk, now Bishop at The Serbian Orthodox Church and Anja Rupel, singer of cult Yugoslavian synth-pop group Videosex.
Tumblr media
Fox & His Friends previously released highly acclaimed soundtrack “Visitors From The Galaxy” by Tomislav Simovic. This was first electronic score in Yugoslavia, made for the first and only Yugoslavian science-fiction feature film. NEP Decadance 12” will be pressed in limited edition of 500, with first 100 copies coming with special comic book insert starring Snuffo and NEP heroine, illustrated by Marvel collaborator Miroslav Mrva.
Numbered 100 copies with comic book insert will be only available at label shops foxandhisfriends.bigcartel.com and foxandhisfriends.bandcamp.com.

[FOX001LP] Tomislav Simović - Visitors From The Galaxy / Gosti iz galaksije (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Tumblr media
Socialist science-fiction classic Visitors from the Galaxy, directed by the only Oscar winning director from ex-Yugoslavia Dusan Vukotic in 1981, will have soundtrack premiere on vinyl 36 years after cinema release. The ground-breaking early electronica work by Croatian composer Tomislav Simovic was considered lost and was never before published. Fox & His Friends label team found the original master reels, restored it at the famous Cedar Audio studio in Cambridge and will soon release it as a special edition 180g audiophile LP in gatefold cover with hype sticker, including rare photographs, insert with liner notes by Zeljko Luketic and Irena Paulus, and colour poster with the galactic heroine Andra.
BUY HERE!
Tumblr media
Gosti iz galaksije aka Visitors from the Galaxy was a 1981 East-Bloc science-fiction extravaganza, first and only of it’s kind in Yugoslavia. It was a success at specialist fantasy film festivals (Madrid, Trieste, Brussels) but confused a lot of home audiences with the specific mixture of bizarre characters, including man with breasts, nudists welcoming extraterrestrials, beautiful alien heroine with her children behaving improperly and a huge, violent monster on killing spree. The creature design, made of plants and artificial human parts was the work of famous Czech filmmaker Jan Svankmajer. The film was a coproduction with Czechoslovakia and was partially shot in Barrandov Studios, with exteriors done in Game of Thrones favoured location Dubrovnik and it’s hidden caves and surroundings. It was distributed in Czechoslovakia, West Germany, Poland, Spain, Italy and Cuba.
Tumblr media
The late director Dusan Vukotic (1927-1998) remained until now the only Oscar winner from ex-Yugoslavia for his celebrated and influential 1962 animated short Ersatz. It pushed the phenomena of Zagreb School of Animation internationally, gathering praise for unique anti-Disney style full of abstraction, reduced movement and themes dealing with grown-up, darker subjects. The main composer for these films was Tomislav Simovic (1931-2014), Zagreb born musician with 300+ film scores in his biography. He was also a well-known jazz composer in his Tomislav Simovic Orchestra. Director Vukotic picked him for the Visitors from the Galaxy and he delivered amazing, completely electronic work which was revolutionary in 1980s Yugoslavia. As the synthesizers were expensive and considered a second rate replacement for acoustic instruments, not many musicians dared to experiment with it. Visitors from the Galaxy now stands as the first ever feature film electronic score in Yugoslavia and Tomislav Simovic is remembered as one of the most prominent and highly awarded among Croatian composers, but so far none of his film pieces was released. He is also the author of the theme for animated series Professor Balthazar, probably the most famous piece of cartoon music in ex Yugoslavia. He was one of the collaborators of the New York music magazine EAR for which he wrote essays for the column Composer and Moving Image.
Tumblr media
The Visitors from the Galaxy soundtrack LP selects the most memorable cues from the feature film. It was researched and programmed by Fox & His Friends label owners, Leri Ahel and Zeljko Luketic. Ahel is a radio professional and a DJ from Rijeka, where he produces his widely syndicated Mutant Disco Radio Show. Journalist and film and music critic Luketic comes from Zagreb. He was the artistic director of Croatian Film Days festival, screenwriter for the Croatian National Television and is finishing his PhD in literature, filmology and performing arts at Zagreb University. He compiled and co-authored Electronic Jugoton – Synthetic Music From Yugoslavia 1964-1989 and Ex Yu Electronica III anthology compilations and curated several museum exhibitions (Borghesia: We Don’t Believe You and The Other Side of Saturday Night Fever: Socialist Disco Culture). Fox & His Friends, as owners Ahel and Luketic say, will release music without genre boundaries, discover rare, obscure and forgotten stuff, the sounds that have timeless value, both contemporary and vintage.
